Here is what our experts feel about XL100
TVS is the third-largest two-wheeler manufacturer in India and primarily known for its race-derived motorcycles. So it will come to you as a surprise when we tell you that it is the only company in India still manufacturing Mopeds. The mopeds once were very popular in India, though sales have steadily declined over the years, it is still one of the top 10 two-wheelers in terms of sales in India. TVS launched the XL 100 to be a heavy-duty and reliable moped targeted for the rural market. People from villages require a cheap mode of transport with low-maintenance, and the XL 100 does the job very easily at a very low cost. The XL 100 is a tough moped in spite of weighing just 66kgs and has been built to withstand the toughest of conditions and harsh usage. The moped sports a wide front platform and a detachable seat to carry more luggage. Due to these features, TVS has sold the XL 100 to more than 1 crore customers. TVS XL 100 comes in 4 different variants. The base variant is the TVS XL 100 Comfort is available for Rs 29,990, next variant TVS XL 100 retails at Rs 33,189, third variant TVS XL 100 Heavy Duty is priced at Rs 33,939, and the newest addition to this range TVS XL 100 Heavy Duty i-Touch Start has a price tag of Rs 37,309.
TVS XL 100 is not about looks, but about practical performance. Hence it is designed in a simple but useful manner. Up front is the bright and powerful multi-reflector headlamp. Since the BSIV update, the moped now sports LED position lights which are placed below the headlight. The fuel tank is embedded in the frame to make way for a wide luggage platform. At the rear, it has the simple looking tail lights coupled with turn indicators. The best thing about the bike is its luggage carrying capacity. Even the platform on the front is made wider to accommodate luggage easily. Seats on the rear are removable making way for a luggage rack. With the rear seat removed, you are easily able to carry more heavy luggage on the rear. Except for the TVS XL 100 Comfort variant, all other variants have split seats with a removable rear seat. On the TVS XL 100 Heavy Duty i-Touch Start variant you also get a self-starter that makes starting the moped very easy even with luggage on the platform. The speedometer is analogue and very basic. The TVS XL 100 comes in 7 colours including Red, Grey, Blue, Green, Black, and the recently added Copper Shine. The new Mineral Purple colour is available only on the TVS XL 100 Heavy Duty i-Touch Start variant.
Now the TVS XL 100 is powered by a 4-stroke engine instead of a 2-stroke one and this is apparent on the position of the kick as well. The kick starter instead of the left side is now placed on the right side of the moped. Powering this bike is not the old 70cc but a new 99.7cc, air-cooled, 4-stroke, single cylinder engine. This engine produces max power of 4.3bhp at 6000rpm with peak torque of 6.5 Nm at 3500rpm and is mated to a single speed gearbox. The fuel efficiency of this moped stands at 67kmpl and the top speed is 60kmph only. Fuel tank capacity is also very less at 4 litres.
Riding on the TVS XL 100 is comfortable enough but not that great as the moped is meant to carry loads and luggage. Hence this moped is built on rugged chassis and has a durable all-metal body as well. Even the suspension of the moped is heavy duty with telescopic spring-type hydraulic forks at the front end and a swing arm with hydraulic shocks at the rear. More than giving comfort, the suspension is meant to take heavy loads easily. Braking is commanded by 80mm drum brake at the front and a bigger 110mm drum brake at the rear. Brakes may seem weak but they work well even with heavy loads. Wheels are 16-inch heavy-duty covered by 2.50 - 16 41L 6PR section tyres on both ends. The wheels are durable and in case they are distorted, it is easy to repair them.
Safety on this moped is kept very basic but concentrated on the important things that the target market values. Hence the moped gets a bright multi-reflector headlamp coupled with powerful LEDs. Large wheels on this moped help go over any obstacles or potholes on the road. Drum brakes are powerful on this bike and are commanded by stainless steel cables that don't rust and has a durable shelf life. Even the silencer guard is completely made of metal which not only protects the rider from heat but also protects the muffler from the road debris. Now the fuel cap is lockable to prevent fuel from being stolen.
