Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Formerly Hero Honda Motors Ltd.) is a motorcycle and scooter manufacturer company based in India. Hero Honda was born in 1984 as a joint venture between Hero Cycles of India and Honda Motorcycle Japan Co. Ltd of Japan. The venture between the companies resulted in many successful milestones, which includes Hero Honda being ranked at 108 position by Forbes in Most Respected Companies category and also in 2001, Hero Honda became largest two-wheeler company in India and World’s No. 1 two-wheeler company in terms of sales in a calendar year.
‘Hero’ brand name is used by the Munjal brothers for their primary company Hero Cycles which was formed in 1956. When the agreement was signed with Honda in 1984, Hero Honda Motors Limited’s factory was established at Gurgaon, India with 26% stake owned by Honda group and Munjal family each. In year 2010, Honda showed it concerns over the agreement and Hero Group bought 26% of Honda’s stake for an undisclosed amount, after which the company was rechristened ‘Hero MotoCorp Ltd’.
The first ever motorcycle to roll out from the newly incorporated venture was CD 100 in 1985. In following years, many other motorcycles were launched and became successful. In 2003, the launch of Karizma created a major development in company’s targeted customers which was till now concentrated towards commuter bikes only. With Honda exiting the venture in 2010, Hero MotoCorp launched dual purpose bike named Hero Impulse.
