Volvo XC40 is the latest model by the Swedish automaker which has been introduced to become a volume getter in India. The compact SUV is mainly directed at the young and adventurous luxury car buyers. The car made its debut last year and is based on the new CMA platform developed by Geely and Volvo. The entry-level SUV is placed below the XC90 and XC60 as the third model in the line-up. The company is betting big on the new Volvo XC40 with styling design, luxurious cum practical interiors and of course, many first in segment features. With the price tag of Rs. 39.9 lakh, the all-new XC40 promises to be the exceptional and most desirable car in its segment.
On the outside, Volvo XC40 follows the 40.1 concept. This compact SUV is the first model ever that has been based on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture. The small SUV gets the expressive design, smart technology and ingenious storage which are mainly built for the city life. The front features the hexagonal grille that gets studs to create a distinctive look among XC cars, adding more sportiness to the overall design. Thor’s hammer LED DRLs are the signature element in the vehicle and the XC40 gets the compact version of the same.
At the sides, the vehicle gets straight deep lines and rides on the 18-inch wheels along with the fat 235/55 Pirelli P zero tyres that add to the muscular appeal. Coming to its rear, it gets signature Volvo waterfall tail lights, large hatch door, chrome-tipped twin exhausts and big spoiler. Volvo XC40 is available in three colours namely Crystal White Pearl, Fusion Red Metallic and Bursting Blue Metallic.
The uncluttered cabin is the area that attracts the most, the inner fit and finish quality as really commendable. The vehicle is mainly targeted towards the millennial and first-time luxury car buyers. The black leather upholstery mixed with the orange contrast elements gives the car an eye catchy looks. The car is equipped with some of the advanced gadgetry in its class. The CleanZone climate control not only maintains a cool environment inside but also allows the user to breathe fresh air no matter how polluted it’s on the outside.
The main highlight of the dashboard is the large 9.0-inch infotainment display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, front and rear heated seats, Auto 8 way electrically adjustable driver seat and panoramic sunroof. Other comfort features include cruise control, lumbar support, keyless entry, push start/stop button and rear parking sensors.
Mechanically, Volvo XC40 is powered by the 2.0 L four-cylinder diesel mill that can produce the power output of 190bhp and peak torque of 400Nm. The oil burner is mated to 8-speed Geartronic automatic gearbox and front biased 4WD system for the smooth driving experience.
Volvo XC40 is one of the most safety equipped SUV in the price range. As Volvo is synonymous with safety, at least this section of the car will not disappoint the user. The car comes loaded with advanced safety aspect including emergency braking, automatic collision avoidance, radar-based driving assist and safety assist system that controls the adaptive cruise control. Other aspects include multiple airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP, brake assist, hill assist and traction control.
Volvo XC40 is offered only single, R-design diesel variant D4 R-Design which is priced at Rs. 39.9 lakh. Looking at all the bells and whistles the car comes with, it seems Volvo intents to do some serious business here. Volvo XC40 is pitted against stalwarts such as BMW X1, Range Rover Evoque, Mercedes Benz GLA and Audi Q3 in its class.

Volvo has gone minimalistic in designing the cabin and it seems to be working in its favour. And combined with attention to details, the cabin really looks an interesting place to be in. The Swedish automaker has incorporated glitziest colour scheme in XC40 which is hardly seen in a car of its class. The cabin is upholstered in black leather/Alcantara mingled with orange contrast elements lending a unique appeal to the car. There is also an all-black interior option for those who don’t want unnecessary ostentations.
The high spot of the dashboard is the big 9-inch vertically aligned touchscreen infotainment lifted directly from elder sibling XC60. The system has easy to use interface and allow access to essentials functions including climate control, seat heating, selecting driving modes, multimedia, navigation and controlling tons of safety aids. It will take some time to get used to it but it’s really helpful. The tablet-like infotainment is also compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with 2 USB sockets, so smartphone integration is never a problem. The decibels are provided by 13-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system.
Looking at the space the car offers, it seems it has been crafted for the young generation especially with a nuclear family. This is because the rear seats will not be comfortable for 3 full sized adults who are looking for a long journey. If you are ready to ignore the low-seating and knee-up position, the headroom and legroom can put a smile on your face. Also due to narrow door cavity, getting into the rear won’t be easy. However, it’s a common problem in cars of this class.
The cabin isn’t claustrophobic, thanks to the panoramic sunroof which helps a lot. Although XC40 isn’t capable of absorbing 5 adults with ease, the carmaker has addressed the essentials need of a small family. The cabin is utterly practical with plentiful cubby holes at the front centre console, huge door pockets, and an inbuilt ‘Qi’ wireless charger with space adjacent to it capable of holding 2 more smartphones. Then there is front centre armrest which can be folded up to reveal a vast storage space with cleverly integrated dustbin with spring loaded lip. There is also a facility of placing cups and cans on the rear armrest. Further, you get a hidden storage underneath the driver’s seat which can hold large items including a laptop.
The car offers an all-digital instrument cluster that also displays maps besides other essentials. The steering is slick and light and provides the right amount of feedback when the car begins to build up speed. Though, the boxy design of the horn pad appears a bit quirky. The special LED lighting inside the cabin highlights the beautifully crafted dashboard. Coming to the boot space, the 586L trunk is impressive while the added storage space in the form of smart floor boosts the practicality of the vehicle. Other premium aspects in the car include electrically operated tailgate, auto LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, power driver seat with memory function and 4-way lumbar support. Overall, in terms of interior comfort and practicality, Volvo XC40 has created enough reasons for Audi Q3, Mercedes GLA Class and BMW X1 to worry.

Volvo has really managed to make a beautiful SUV that shows robustness from every angle. Thanks to the protruding hood with character lines starting from the front doors and extending to the headlights and the hexagonal grille with Volvo’s Ironmark logo. The muscular lines on the bumper and the Thor Hammer LED incorporated in the all-LED headlamp cluster make it a looker. Move to the sides and you will find no curves in this section. The straight deep lines create an old-school SUV stance while the 18-inch alloys add more to the vigour. Then there is more pronounced body cladding and the blacked out roof which gives the car a distinct image of its own.
There is a sharp bend on the rear door and the windshield is sharply raked. The LED waterfall tail lamps are typical Volvo while the large black bumpers and the prominent spoiler makes the car look compact. Other highlights in the form of large (largest in the class) hatch door and dual chrome exhausts rounds up the rear profile.

Mileage Running Cost

Volvo XC40 is powered by fuel efficient and responsive diesel engine. And with the latest Drive-E technology, the fuel consumption is kept minimal. So, one can expect better fuel efficiency while traversing in urban conditions as well as on the highways.

Comfort Suspension

Volvo XC40 has been crafted on CMA platform which is known for excellent dynamics. The platform incorporates McPherson struts upfront and multi-link suspension at the rear that translates into sporty and confident handling. The suspension system is also capable of tackling bad roads and bump absorption is also impressive. Though there is a hint of stiffness at low speeds due to the use of steel springs in the suspension, the car still rides in a composed manner.
At high speeds, XC40 feels planted and does not lose the serenity, even if it is riding over rippled surfaces. But the carmaker needs to calibrate the suspension according to Indian road conditions for more comfortable riding experience.

Engine Performance

Powering the all-new XC40 is the 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that produces 190PS and humongous 400Nm of max torque. The power is sent to the wheels via 8-speed automatic transmission and what’s interesting is the addition of paddle shifters on the steering that makes gearshifts smoother. The company claims that the car can sprint from 0-100 in 7.9 seconds of time, which is quick for an SUV.
The car also offers different driving modes including Eco, Comfort, Dynamic, Off-Road, and Individual, all changes the engine response and steering feel as per their calibration. Volvo has also equipped this car with an all-wheel-drive system and while changing the drives modes, the torque figures also change in the AWD system.
The engine feels exactly what a Volvo car should be on the roads. The power delivery is quick while the engine response is smooth, refined and reasonably serene. The powertrain is energetic and due to its strong mid-range performance, the car builds-up speed quickly. The eight-speed automatic gearbox offers a relatively smooth driving experience with triple-digit figure easily attainable on highways.

Braking Safety

The Swedish automaker is known for world-class safety and the new XC40 compact SUV is no exception. With discs brakes at both front and rear end, the car is loaded with intersection braking system known as City Safety. The system reduces the chances of an accident at the road junction by automatically applying brakes if the driver comes into the path of an oncoming vehicle. This is a world first safety feature which was first introduced in XC90.
The car also comes with a host of advanced safety features including collision avoidance, lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control. Moreover, for hassle-free driving in heavy traffic, the vehicle is loaded with Pilot Assist which maintains a distance to the vehicle in the front. It can be called as semi-autonomous driving. Besides, the usual safety kit of this class include multiple airbags, electronic stability control (ESP), hill descent control, hill start assist, rear parking sensors, park assist and rain sensors.
