The V40 Cross Country is Volvo's competitor in the compact-luxury hatchback segment in India. The V40 Cross Country is one of the best looking cars in its segment and comes loaded to the gills with innovative features. As with all Volvo cars, safety is paramount though this car is also sporty, spacious and luxurious too. The soft-roader like design also makes the car stand out from the competition. Volvo imports the V40 Cross Country to India as completely-built units, so prices are on the higher side.

The Volvo V40 Cross Country caters to the new set of luxury buyers, especially from the younger generation, who are looking for luxury and performance in a smaller package.

The design is bold and hansome and we have to say it will be the best looking in its class for sure. The V40 Cross Country wears a rugged look which compliments its hatchback design. In contrast to the normal V40, the Cross Country features a dark, contrasting bumper, honeycomb mesh grille and upright DRL-lights. The sills are contrasting and sculpted. Plus the rear bumper now comes with integrated skid plate These little touches give it a lot of road-presence. The massive 17 inch alloys on the diesel variant and the 16-inch wheels on the petrol variant also lend to the cool look of the V40 Cross Country. Build quality is simply superb and the bold colours on offer compliment the design well.

While the exterior design is bold and striking, the interior is luxurious and much more subtle. The design is just like any other modern Volvo car, and that is a compliment. The dash design is typical Volvo and it is quite restrained, though it has futuristic touches like a high-tech TFT (thin film transistor) instrument digital display which changes colour and display based on three modes. The centre-console has the trademark curved look and the layout is quite easy to use as it is crammed with buttons. Quality of the materials used inside is very good and everything feels very solid. The Volvo V40 Cross Country has a lot of goodies including a multimedia system with Bluetooth music streaming plus handsfree mobile connectivity as standard. The seats are, in true Volvo fashion, big and comfy and there is decent room for three pasengers at the rear. As a hatchback, rear headroom is not plentiful and though leg space is good, it is not the best in the segment.

The Volvo V40 Cross Country is offered with two engine options in India. A 2.0-litre, 5-cylinder, turbocharged diesel motor developing 152PS of maximum power and 350 Nm of maximum torque and a 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor developing 183PS of maximum power and 240Nm of maximum torque. Both the engines are mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. While both the motors are the most powerful in the segment, they are not the best when it comes to efficiency. In terms of responsiveness and handling, the V40 Cross Country is one the best in its segment.

Being a Volvo, the V40 Cross Country gets a suite of safety systems which includes SIPS airbags, knee airbags, curtain airbags and city safety system among others. The good thing is that the ABS, ESP and other driving aids do not dumb down the driving experience of the car, which is a huge plus.

Engine

The 2.0-litre diesel motor offered on the Volvo V40 develops 152PS and 350Nm of torque and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The 0-100 km/h time is about 8.9 seconds, which is quiet good. There is good power on offer and the gear changes are spot on and responsive. There is also a 1.6 litre turbo petrol option which develops 183PS and 240Nm of torque, this is the more sportier motor on offer and has a higher top speed.

What we don't like

Mileage

Diesel Mileage 23.3 kmpl
Petrol Mileage 19.6 kmpl

The 2.0-litre, 5-cylinder turbocharged diesel motor on the V40 Cross Country has an ARAI certified fuel-efficiency figure of 16.81 km/l. Volvo has not specified the ARAI certified fuel-efficiency figure for the 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor.

What we like

The diesel motor is sufficiently efficient

What we don't like

Diesel and petrol motors not the most efficient in class. Volvo service points are far and few in-between

Safety

The V40 Cross Country has many safety features like SIPS airbags, knee airbags, curtain airbags and city safety system. The V40 Cross Country handles well and grip is good.

What we like

Loads of safety features

What we don't like

Nothing really

Comfort

The Volvo V40 Cross Country has slightly raised suspension as compared to its standard hatchback sibling (which is not sold in India), it has been stiffened to reduce body roll but that has not affected the ride quality of the car. The ride in general is very smooth and comfortable, sharp undulations on broken tarmac too tend to filter through though. The stiffened suspension ensures that the V40 Cross Country rarely loses composition and remains planted even when you take it the cars' top speed (210 km/h for the petrol and 200 km/h for the diesel).

What we like

Generally comfortable, feels planted at most speeds

What we don't like

Sharp undulations filter through

Volvo V40 Cross Country Front The Volvo V40 Cross Country is almost here. My love affair with Volvo began when I first drove the S60 sedan in all-wheel drive guise and monster of a petrol-V6 engine under its bonnet. Across the country with the Volvo V40 Cross Country

By Kumara Reddy Posted on 18 Mar 14, 05:18 PM

Pros Great Looks,Good Performance,Great Interiors,Fuel Efficiency,Comfort,

Cons Average Interiors, price and service costs

Volvo V40 Cross Country is a great new crossover. Being a huge Volvo fan due to their safety ratings i wanted to have another Volvo in my garage. My wife and I went on a road trip recently from Hyderabad to Bangalore from there we followed the Golden Quadrilateral all the way back to Bangalore again. We were on the road for 1 month exploring several parts of the country we had never seen before. During our road trip we had a small incident where at a toll queue our car got rammed from the back by a truck at low speed. The damage sustained wasnt a lot but it was enough for Volvo to give me a repair estimate of nearly 24000 for a work which would have ideally cost few thousand rupees. This was the only disappointing part of my experience with Volvo. Other than that I have had a good experience with this brand and I would recommend the brand to others.

Safest car on the road

By Bhanu Posted on 05 Apr 14, 07:45 PM

Pros Great Looks,Good Performance,Great Interiors,

Cons ,Service is expensive

Very good and comfortable car. Though, the service cost turns out heavy on the pocket. Volvo quality is brilliant. Cars that make you feel grounded on the road.
