Volkswagen Polo was launched in the Indian market back in the year 2010. The Polo marks as the Volkswagen’s first offering in the premium hatch segment in the subcontinent. It holds a significant place in the German carmaker’s Indian portfolio and constitutes a fair pie of share in the segment. It’s the bread and butter model of the brand with wonderful built quality and unmatchable fit and finish levels. Since its launch, the car manufacturer has managed to provide timely updates to the vehicles’ looks, interiors, and engines.
Volkswagen has recently showcased 2018 Polo which will be soon launched in the country. The new Polo hatch gets an intense makeover with a new set of engines. It is based on the new MQB A0 platform which significantly increases its length and breadth. The carmaker has incorporated new design elements including red inserts in the headlamps, 17-inch alloys, rear spoiler, LED tail lamps, redesigned dashboard, instrument cluster and new touchscreen infotainment among other.
Talking about the current Polo, the exterior profile of the hatch gets design cues from the bigger sibling, the Golf. The car features sharp creases and sporty lines all over and while still retaining the spirit of Polo. The body structure of the Polo is longer and this, in turn, it makes the cabin quite roomier for the passengers. Volkswagen Polo’s sleek design is assisted by the front lean radiator grille that features a thin chrome strip running between the headlamps. The bumper gets fog lamps at the lower side while the bonnet is wide and gets sharp lines on it.
The real Polo is viewed from the sides. The flat shoulder line and clean body panel give it a unique character. Then the sporty quotient is further enhanced by the 15-inch TOSA and 16-inch PORTAGO alloy wheels. The rear part is designed beautifully with a minimalistic style and gets integrated spoiler, wide tail lamps and reflectors. The oomph of styling can be seen in the form of rakish spoiler in the GT variant that makes a lasting impression on the go. The car measures 3971mm in length, 1682mm in width and 1469mm in height. Where the wheelbase stands at 2469mm, the ground clearance of the car measures 165mm, which is acceptable in terms of city driving. Volkswagen Polo comes in vibrant shades such as Flash Red, Candy White, Carbon Steel, Blue Silk, Toffee Brown and Reflex Silver.
Step inside and you will notice the premium plastic, as well as the top notch, fit and finish that lends the car an upmarket feel. The cabin is designed in the typical Volkswagen style and features a dual tone colour scheme. The central console of the car is highlighted by the silver accents. The German carmaker is known for quality equipment levels and this is evident from the features such as automatic climate control, steering mounted audio control, keyless entry, rear ac vents, cruise control and height adjustable driver’s seat.
Other premium and comfort features include electrically foldable ORVM with integrated turn indicators, doorstep garnish, one-touch up/down windows, ambient lighting with theatre effect and rear wiper/washer. The main highlight this time around is the 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay as well as MirrorLink that emulates the screen of your smartphone on to the screen of the infotainment. Further, the options such as USB, Aux-In, Bluetooth and SD Card take care of your entertainment aspects.
Taking a quick glance at the specifications, Volkswagen Polo is available in both diesel and petrol engine options. The 1.0L MPI, 3-cylinder In-line petrol mill is capable of generating the power output of 76PS and belts out the peak torque of 95Nm. It’s 1.5L TDI diesel oil burner can churn the power of 90PS and yields the maximum torque of 230Nm. Both the engine comes mated to five-speed manual gearbox. As per the mileage figures, Volkswagen Polo petrol engine deliver 18.78kmpl while the diesel mill gives 20.14kmpl of fuel efficiency. There is also a powerful model being offered by the manufacturer with the name Polo GT. It is powered by the 1.0 turbocharged petrol powertrain that pumps out 105PS and 175Nm of max torque mated to 7-speed automatic transmission. There is also a GT model in the diesel line-up with the 1.5L engine pumping out 110PS and 250Nm of max torque, paired to 5-speed manual.
The car comes with the boot space of 280 litres which is, unfortunately, the lowest in the segment, even Maruti Suzuki Swift has 326 litres of luggage space. The kerb weight of the vehicle is 1044 kgs and 1163 kgs in petrol and diesel variants respectively. And with the fuel tank capacity of 45 litres, those long trips are no longer a problem.
Volkswagen Polo is one of the well-equipped hatchbacks in the B+ segment. Safety of the passengers is the priority and for that company has included an array of features. The list includes dual front airbags, Anti-lock braking system, Engine immobilizer, central locking, rain sensing wipers, power door lock, cornering lights, child safety lock and 3-point seat belts at front and rear.
Volkswagen Polo is available in 4 different variants such as Trendline, Comfortline, Highline and Highline Plus. The price range of the premium hatch is between Rs. 5.54 lakh and Rs. 9.33 lakh. The base variant Trendline is offered at the price tag of Rs. 5.54 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 7.04 lakh for the diesel trim. Its top-spec model Highline Plus is available at the price tag of Rs. 7.37 lakh and Rs. 8.09 lakh for the petrol and diesel variants respectively. The powerful GT variant is priced at Rs. 9.19 lakh for the petrol trim and Rs. 9.33 lakh for the diesel, ex-showroom, New Delhi.
Polo hatchback is currently pitted against Hyundai Elite i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Honda Jazz in the premium hatchback segment. Volkwagen Polo has really struggled to make its strong position in the niche despite immense trust of people in Maruti and Hyundai brands. The competition is really getting intense in the segment and the 2018 Volkswagen Polo might change the game for the carmaker.


Talking about the cabin, it’s neither too spacious nor cramped but people looking for rear seat comfort for 3 adult passengers, might get disappointed. The space at the front, however, is better and on par with the rivals in the segment. The two-tone colour theme of the cabin is elegant with the centre console finished in silver that appears pleasant to the eyes. The set of air cons located at the top of the center console is angled towards the driver giving utmost driving comfort. For the feeling of more premiumness, the flat bottom steering with mounted audio controls is wrapped in leather while chrome highlights add to the richness.
Below the air cons, is the new touchscreen infotainment which let you pair your Android and Apple smartphones for music and telephony. The system also supports MirrorLink which let you mirror your smartphone screen on the display of the infotainment. One can also synchronize music with the option of USB, Aux-In, Bluetooth and SD Card connectivity. Move down further and you will see the climatronic air conditioning system that also has its own dedicated display. There is a large open space below the centre console where you would like to stash your small important belongings and spare items.
The layout of the multi-information instrument though is not comprehensive like rival Baleno but not complex either. It gives essential information including average speed, average fuel consumption and distance to empty readout along with service reminder. Other vital features in the car include auto-dimming interior rearview mirror, one-touch up/down windows, rear wiper/washer, ambient lighting with theatre effect, driver side dead pedal and sunglass holder in the glovebox which can be cooled through air cons inside. Still, the car misses on a lot of equipment including navigation, projector headlamps, reversing camera and keyless entry.


The styling of the hatchback is undeniably sporty and one has to agree that it’s one of the most modern looking hatchbacks. The car is modest and mature at the same time, a balance that hasn’t cracked by the competitors so far. At the front, the thin grille has been the touch of silver at the bottom with the brand logo at the centre. Either side of the grille is flanked by sharp headlights though looking at what the competitors are offering, the lack of LED headlights goes against its favour.
The air dam below boasts of a sharp chrome lining on the top giving the car an aggressive character. The muscular touch can be further seen on the bonnet with two creases down the length. The best viewing angle of the car is probably from the side with the lean design and the kink in the window creating a pouncing pose leading to the front. The design seems to be clean with flat shoulder line, neat touches on the body panels and flared wheel arches. The 15-inch TOSA and 16-inch PORTAGO alloy wheels on the top models are well designed and look excellent when the car is in motion.
The car looks like a cute little car when viewed from the rear. The adorable appearance comes from the square-shaped tail lights and again, LED treatment is missing which is something a norm in this class. Apart from this, the clean and minimalistic design continues with a revamped bumper and reflectors at each side at the bottom. However, if you choose the GT variant, the dashing rear spoiler, especially with black cladding on the red paint looks spectacular to the eyes.

Mileage Running Cost

The fuel efficiency figures are fairly impressive in both the diesel and petrol engine powered Polo. Where the 1.5L diesel puts 20.14kmpl in the standard variant, the GTI model reads 19.91kmpl, certified by ARAI. The petrol manual version returns decent 18.78kmpl, the automatic variant delivers respectable 17.21kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

The Polo hatch on road behaves like a typical European vehicle. The solid built and excellent composure gives big-car like ride quality while the well-tuned suspension set-up is perfect for the Indian road conditions. The car boasts of mature road manners. Take it to the corners and you will realize that it offers nice stability and minimal body roll. The vertical movement, unlike its tallboy competitors, is also minimum. The grip levels are also fantastic even if you push it hard.
The steering wheel is light for urban road conditions but at the same time, it is communicative. Whether you are on the back seat or the front or even uneven road patches, the ride quality stays flat.

Engine Performance

Volkswagen Polo sources its power from 1.5L diesel and 1.0L petrol engine. The 1.5L 4-cylinder TDI diesel engine which produces 90PS and 230Nm of torque is better than the earlier 3-cylinder engine. The powertrain offers excellent performance and drivability in urban conditions as well as on highways. The 5-speed manual transmission is easy with well-defined gear rations. Power hungry folks can choose the GT TDI model in which the same engine produces 110PS and 250Nm of max torque.
The carmaker has replaced the 1.2L TSI engine with the 1.0L TSI one that makes 75PS and 110Nm of peak torque, paired to 5-speed manual gearbox. Though it’s not as powerful as the competitors, it gives acceptable performance in cities. However, if you choose the GT TSI variant, you will love to drive one of the most performance packed hatchbacks available in the country. The 4-cylinder turbocharged model musters 105PS and 175Nm of torque. And with the 7-speed dual clutch DSG automatic gearbox to assist, the performance is unbeatable in both sifting through cities and zipping through those trucks on highways.

Braking Safety

The overall braking action is confidence inspiring. The braking system lets you control the amount of braking you want whether you are driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic, entering tight corners or shedding speed. In terms of safety, the automaker has built the hatchback with high strength steel frame and the seats are also nestled comfortably.
Polo comes equipped with standard dual front airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), front and rear height adjustable head restraints, electronic engine immobilizer with floating code, 3-point front seat belts, central locking, emergency exit and rear fog lamps.
The higher variants are also loaded with auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror, front fog lamps, speed sensing auto-door locks, rear defoggers, rear parking sensors and anti-pinch front and rear power windows
