Overview

Toyota has taken its due time to enter the mid-sized sedan segment. Yet, despite of the delay, the Japanese auto giant took the market by storm with the introduction of its Yaris sedan in the space where behemoths Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz are already competing sternly against each other. So it was obvious that the car maker will pack the vehicle with something extra to take on the competition quite well. Toyota Yaris was first revealed at the Auto Expo 2018 followed by its launch in May 2018. With amazing outer and inner profile and high tech safety features, Toyota Yaris is certainly a top-notch product in many aspects. Yaris is available in only petrol mill with no diesel powertrain, maybe because of declining diesel engine demand globally.
The all-new Toyota Yaris sedan gets the sharper design cues that are in line with Camry and new Corolla. The sleek body structure and delicacy in the design make the vehicle look attractive. The wide radiator grille that houses the LED DRLs makes the front nose appealing. The sweptback headlights gets projector units and the fog lamps are round in shape with vertically stacked black plastic around it. At the sides, the sedan runs on 15-inch alloy wheels with 12-spoke that makes the car look sportier. Toyota Yaris is offered in 6 different colours they are Silver Metallic, Super White, Grey Metallic, Pearl White, Phantom brown and Wildfire Red.
The cabin inside is adorned with black and beige colour scheme along with waterfall centre console that works quite well. The cabin is the typical Toyota and reminds us of its sibling Corolla. The backlit instrument panel with 4.2-inch colour TFT screen looks very nice and attractive. The soft touch air-conditioning buttons and chrome black and tan colour palette conveys the feeling of superiority. The seats in the front are very comfy along with nice shoulder support while the comfort of the rear seats is also decent.
The long feature list of the sedan includes climate control, cruise control, and rear parking sensors, keyless entry, 60:40 rear seat split, and 8-way height adjustable driver’s seat. The roof-mounted air-vents with ambient lighting is a debut feature in the Indian version and will be available globally later. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment at the centre console comes with gesture control along with navigation.
In terms of specifications, Toyota Yaris is available in single petrol engine which is the 1.5L mill producing power output of 108PS and the peak torque of 140Nm. The motor comes with six-speed manual gearbox and optional 7-step CVT automatic transmission. The area where Yaris shines is its amazing ride quality, once you speed up, the comfort is truly impressive. The ride is quiet and no other secondary movement is noticeable, even over large bumps the car remains stable. Even its straight-line comfort is very nice.
Call it a USP or a trump card of the automaker, in terms of safety, Yaris impresses the most. The car gets 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, and Brake assist as standard fitment across the range. The top model VX gets Hill Start Assist control, electronic stability program, rain sensing wipers, engine immobilizer, central locking, turn indicators on ORVMs and automatic headlamps.
Toyota Yaris is available in four different variants- J, G, V and VX. In terms of pricing, its base variant J is tagged at Rs. 8.75 lakh while its CVT variant is available at the price tag of Rs. 9.95 lakh. Its top-spec VX trim is priced at Rs. 12.85 lakh and automatic CVT version is available at Rs. 14.07 lakh, ex-showroom, New Delhi. Toyota Yaris takes on Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Ciaz in the segment.

Interior

The cabin of the car looks bright and inviting and very rationally laid out. The waterfall design on the dashboard looks soothing to eyes. From instrument dials to switches, all stuff are easy to read and within the reach of the driver. The interiors have a striking resemblance to that of elder sibling Corolla with the similarly layered dash, bulging doorpads, and chunky looking steering wheel. However, there are unique elements in the form of 4.2-inch TFT instrument cluster, slick air cons switches and chrome/black tan theme.
The seats are comfortable and the leather draping makes it plusher. There is a good amount of knee room due to flat floor space. At the rear, you get two 12-volt charging sockets and rear armrest with 2 cup holder for the comfort of the passengers. The highlight at the rear, of course, is the roof-mounted air cons that does its job pretty nicely for the rear occupants. The car comes with 7-inch AVN touchscreen infotainment system with gesture control. The system also allows access to WiFi, MirrorLink, and navigation.
Other comfort features in the car include cooled glovebox, keyless entry, automatic climate control, push button start, steering mounted audio controls, rain sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, automatic headlamps and cruise control.

Exterior

Yaris sedan has been well-proportioned with some pleasing design elements lending it a stylish look. At the front, the car features sleek headlights and slim chrome grille connecting the brand logo and the headlamps. Beneath, the equally slim LED DRLs are placed either side of the front bumper. The massive airdam takes most of the space at the front. At the side, the sweeping roofline is well executed while there are gorgeous character lines across which makes it stand out from its counterparts. The 15-inch alloy wheels though, look a tad smaller.
The rear portion is also finished nicely giving you an idea how wide the car is. The vehicle features wraparound tail lamps with LED elements and the spoiler on the top of the boot. Though the car is shorter in length than its counterparts, it stands neck to neck when it comes to width.

Mileage Running Cost

Available in only petrol engine, Toyota has applied maximum effort to make it a daily commuter. As per Toyota’s claim, Yaris manual variant returns 17.1kmpl, while the CVT automatic variant is able to deliver 17.8kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

The suspension system is fair enough to give comfortable ride in the cities and highways. It is calm and poised and can work fairly well broken roads and potholes. The suspension set-up is tuned in a manner that minor undulations won’t be noticed by the occupants.

Engine Performance

Yaris packs a single yet powerful petrol engine. The 1.5L 4-cylinder engine has the same block as that in Etios but everything else is unique. The motor makes 108PS and 140Nm of max torque. The engine can be availed either with 6-speed manual transmission or CVT transmission with paddle shifters.
The major plus point of this engine is the level of refinement. At standby, the engine is barely audible and this is just the minor part of the advantage. When driving, whether you are at the speed 40kmph or cruising at highways at 120kmph, the engine is utter smooth.

Braking Safety

The car has been bestowed with all-four disc brakes which makes you pretty much secure even at high speeds. The powerful brakes also make the car more stable and carry extra speed at the corners. The car’s main highlight is the safety features it comes with. The vehicle gets a total of 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, and ISOFIX seat mounts as standard fitment, first ever offered in any of the cars in the segment.
Move on to the top variants and you will get ESP, tyre pressure monitoring system, hill start assist, traction control, vehicle stability control and front and rear parking sensors. Overall, the automaker has to be credited for the level of safety tech it has given to the car.

Looks are good, but let it not deceive

Too early to commend now, but looks good. But if by anyway if its going to have anything from Ethios, that will be a disaster. Ethios is one of the most unsafe car in India & worst design ever seen. I am speaking about the safety of this vehicle from my own experience.. Hope Toyota will not make that mistake Read More
