Review of Toyota Prius

Overview

The darling of Hollywood stars and a global icon- that is what could be a part description of the Toyota Prius. Ever since its debut with the first generation many years back the Prius has popularised the term hybrid. It is the world's first mass-produced hybrid car and yes you can buy it right here in India. It has been many years since the first generation Prius has been revealed to the world yet the distinctive style and the futuristic looks have set a benchmark in design. In fact you can spot a Prius from far off. Thanks to its roaring popularity the Prius also enjoys its fair share of the spotlight. Hollywood movie stars and even the co-founder of Google has one. This car is indeed the star. The facelift version adds daytime lights, new design details, alloys which make it a cool car. The Prius is a hybrid so its eco-credentials are spot on but where the Prius also scores is the fact that it has abundance of luxury and features. The seats are soft and comfortable and there is lots of space. The amount of features present will put any midsize luxury saloon to shame. You get USB, AUX-in connections in the armrest, Multi information display with 16 gradation-step Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD), 6.1 inch full colour touch screen interface, Bluetooth, i-pod, rear view camera and list goes on and on. The best bit is the solar panel roof which even when the car is locked has fans so that when you step into the car again you do not need to immediately switch on the air-con. You may think that hybrids are slow and take forever to go any-where but you are wrong because the new Prius has a 1.8 litre petrol motor along with a powerful electric motor which together makes 134 bhp which is no doubt fast. Plus it is the smooth CVT automatic gearbox that takes the cake as it is fast and as smooth as butter. In electric only cars there is the issue of range, space, features, well everything but in the Prius you get it all. The Prius is a parallel hybrid where the batteries are charged by the petrol engine or by regenerative braking system thus eliminating the root cause for all range problems associated with EV’s. You get around 20-25 kmpl in city. Beat that. The ride is slightly stiff but the refinement is superb. The Prius has increased body stiffness which means it has better build quality than any car at this price. Plus it has a Pre-Crash Safety system which uses Adaptive Cruise Control. What it means is that it uses sensors located under the front grille to predict possible collisions and triggers a series of intelligent safety features. It will automatically pre-tension seatbelts, activate an audible, Brake Assist alarm and in an event of a collision activate automatic braking. This means you are safer in the Prius than in any other car.
