Overview

Toyota Corolla Altis is the premium cum executive sedan coming from the stable of Japanese car maker. The Corolla is the largest selling nameplate in the world with over 44 million units sold since the time it was first launched. The vehicle was introduced in India in the year 2003 and since then it has been given a number of updates. When its second-gen model hit the shores it caused quite a stir in the Indian car bazaar and reclaimed the top position that had slid from its hold. While the D-segment is getting redundant with the people moving towards compact SUVs, this hasn’t deterred the carmaker to introduce new and updated vehicle in the segment. Toyota India has once again come up with its updated Corolla Altis with cosmetic changes and several new equipment additions inside the cabin.
Looking at the new Toyota Corolla Altis from the design perspective, it gets the refreshed front façade. The radiator grille now becomes narrower as compared to the outgoing model while on the other hand, its sportscar like profile and long and wide front bonnet remains the same. The front features the T design theme with new LED headlamps and Bi-beam LED lighting system with smart LED DRLs. On the side, the sharp character lines, short front and rear overhangs and muscular dimensions give the Corolla a solid stance. The vehicle gets new 16-inch alloy wheels. Toyota Corolla is being offered in 7 vibrant colour options viz. White Pearl Crystal Shine, Silver Mica Metallic, Grey Metallic, Champagne Mica Metallic, Super White II, Celestial Black as well as a new addition to the list named Phantom Brown.
The interior of the new Corolla Altis is ergonomic and well-built. The car is very spacious and offers a comfortable ride to the occupants which are one of the primary reasons for its popularity among the elite class. The new Corolla features fresh upholstery, new HVAC controls and circular vents. The fit and finish of the vehicle is quite contemporary and much better than its predecessor. The Altis features lighter Flaxen colour scheme, it gets 10-way adjustable driver’s seat, reclining rear bench, rear sunshade and 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit paired with 6 speakers. The infotainment also supports MirrorLink, HDMI, USB, Bluetooth and SD Card connectivity. Other comfort features include cruise control, push start/stop button, rear parking sensor and steering mounted audio controls.
Toyota Corolla Altis sources its power from the same 1.8L petrol and 1.4L diesel mill. The 1.8L 4-cylinder dual VVT-i petrol engine is capable of generating the power output of 140PS and peak torque of 173Nm. The diesel powertrain makes 88PS and maximum torque of 205Nm. The petrol mill comes mated to 6-speed manual as well as optional 7-speed automatic gearbox while the diesel engine is available in 6-speed manual transmission only. The new version delivers slightly higher fuel efficiency figures which are about 21.03kmpl for the diesel trim and 14.28kmpl for the petrol one.
Talking about safety, the 2017 Toyota Corolla has raised the standards of its petrol and diesel trims. The petrol variants get 7 airbags ABS with EBD and Brake Assist as standard fitment while the diesel trims feature 3 airbags ABS with EBD and Brake Assist as standard. Other safety aspects include engine immobiliser with alarm, pretensions and force limiters, child restraint system, Impact sensing fuel cut and driver knee bolster.
Toyota Corolla Altis is available in three trims such as G, GL and VL. The price range goes from Rs. 16.27 lakh up to Rs. 20.01 lakh. The base variant G gets the price tag of Rs. 16.27 lakh and Rs. 17.53 lakh for the petrol and diesel trims respectively. The GL variant is tagged at Rs. 18.64 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 19.18 lakh for the diesel version. The top-spec model VL is available at the price tag of Rs. 20.01 lakh, ex-showroom, New Delhi.
Toyota Corolla Altis competes against Skoda Octavia, Hyundai Elantra, Chevrolet Cruze and Volkswagen Jetta in the D-segment.

Interior

Get inside and you will notice a typical Toyota layout. The ergonomics, build quality and general layout of the dash remains identical. The only change at the front can be seen on the central console that now comes with more soft-touch surfaces and improved materials. The dashboard draped in beige and grey scheme with glossy black central console gives roomy feel which fits perfectly to the car of this segment. The air cons buttons are changed entirely so the air vents which now gets the circular design.
The primary addition this time around includes a new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment which does a whole lot of things in terms of entertainment, telephony and driver assistance. The new infotainment system features a larger screen and comes equipped with MirrorLink, HDMI, navigation, pre-loaded apps, hand gesture, voice control and Mirror Cast Wi-Fi. The infotainment also allows USB, Bluetooth and SD Card connectivity. Though the air conditioner without rear ac vents is powerful enough to cool the entire cabin in minutes, the facility of two-zone climate control is still missing.
Coming to the seating, Corolla is always known for comfortable rear seats and the new version is no exception. The driver seat is electrically adjustable and offers lumbar support. The rear bench as always is comfortable, they can be reclined and also offers a generous amount of legroom. The central armrest can be flipped down to reveal 2 cup holders and a cubbyhole. The most interesting aspect of the seats is that they offer high seating position which results in easy ingress and egress. The 40:60 flip down feature expands the boot space to 470L.
Apart from this, the car offers a range of comfort and convenience features including wireless door lock, steering mounted audio/cruise control, reverse camera with sensors, push engine start/stop button and 12 v socket and 2 USB socket at rear for charging devices.

Exterior

The changes at the outside are subtle and might go unnoticed for a newbie. The car continues to retain its native styling, however, the biggest alteration at the front is the new grille design which is thinner and in line with the design language used in sibling Fortuner. Then there is revised front bumper and bi-beam LED headlights along with LED fog lamps that not only enhance the overall looks but also light up the road ahead quite brilliantly. The carmaker has used less chrome on the nose and unexpectedly, the shiny band on the boot is also slimmer.
The side profile remains the same except new 16-inch alloy wheels which gives a sharp sense of styling to the vehicle. The sharp character lines and the brawny proportions with short front and rear overhangs lend an aggressive and sporty appeal to the car. At the rear, the sedan gets a different tail light which now features LED set-up. Overall, the changes are minor but they add a bit to the overall profile.

Mileage Running Cost

The car is frugal in terms of fuel efficiency. Both petrol manual and automatic variant deliver the same mileage figure of 14.28kmpl. The diesel-powered Corolla is excellent in terms of driving more mileage for less fuel with 21.43kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

The suspension setup in the car comes in the form of McPherson struts at front and torsion beam at the rear. This is on a softer side that translates to plush ride quality and excellent stability around the corners. Moreover, the car gobbles up bad patches on the road easily but stumbles a bit on bumps.
Stability is also good with the steering wheel providing better feedback than the older generation model. It is also light to tackle city driving comfortably.

Engine Performance

The new Corolla continues to source its power from the same 1.8L petrol and 1.4L diesel engines. The 1.8L Dual VVT-i petrol engine makes 140PS and 173Nm of torque. The transmission duties are handled either by 6-speed manual or 7-speed sequential CVT automatic gearbox. The most outstanding feature of this engine is the refinement levels. The car remains smooth and serene at almost all the times. Though the power output is not plenty but the delivery is very well predictable and torque is evenly distributed. The CVT automatic offers smooth shift ratios while the rubberband effect can be minimized by paddle shifters. Overall, the engine gives the best performance in the mid-range.
The diesel motor is the 1.4L 4-cylinder with variable turbo-cooler which produces 88PS and 205Nm of torque. This is certainly a low power output which provides underwhelming performance on the go. However, the car is a great highway cruiser and shifting to the 6th gear can actually return a healthy mileage. But when it comes to excitement, this engine surely lacks the punch.

Braking Safety

The brakes in the sedan offer nice stopping power however the pedal should have offered better confidence. In terms of safety, the new Toyota Corolla has certainly improved on several notches. The car now comes with 7 SRS airbags (5 airbags as standard), which was two in the previous version looking at how critical are these to the safety of the passengers. Along with that, you also get ABS with EBD and Brake Assist as standard fitment if you are opting for petrol variant.
In the diesel variant, however, you get only 3 airbags as standard along with ABS with EBD and Brake Assist. Other features in the top spec variant include vehicle stability control, hill start assist, impact sensing fuel cut, and child restraint system.
