Toyota Camry is currently one of the best vehicles that are available in the mid-size luxury car segment. Though the sedan is a niche player in the segment, it got a big boost when the Japanese carmaker decided to assemble it in India. This gave it an edge over immediate rival Honda Accord in terms of pricing. Toyota has recently launched 2018 Camry in India, the updated car gets minor tweaks on the outside as well as inside with added goodies.
The 2018 Toyota Camry is being offered as a perfect choice for the executive buyers as it gets high predicted reliability rating, advanced driver assist features and numerous safety aspects. Camry also gets a boost in performance and all thanks to its powerful and improved engine. The carmaker has roughly sold around 10,000 Camry till date and the most surprising bit is that about 73 percent sales come from the hybrid version. This also shows the great potential of hybrid cars in India and the reason why Toyota came out with the 7th generation model.
Talking about its exteriors, Toyota Camry looks identical to its outgoing version. The front façade features chrome radiator grille along with the automatic LED headlamps. The bumper flaunts the large air dam with the round LED fog lamps placed at the edges. Triangular turn signals are fixed on each sides of the front bumper. Coming to side, Toyota Camry rides on fifteen spoke 17-inch alloy wheels with a lot of chrome used across window sills and door handles. Rear part gets wraparound tail lamps with LED brake lights while a sleek chrome strip can be seen on the bumper and boot lid as well. Toyota Camry is available in vibrant shades such as Silver Metallic, Phantom Brown, Attitude Black, Gray Metallic, White Pearl Crystal Shine and True Blue Mica Metallic.
The majority of tweaks in the new Camry are given to the interiors. The 2018 hybrid version comes with advanced goodies. The spacious cabin now gets tan-coloured upholstery with carbon wood finish on the door trims, steering wheel, centre console and dashboard. The four-spoke wheel used in the older version is now replaced by the three-spoke multifunctional unit. 2018 Toyota Camry gets updated infotainment system with navigation and supports AUX-in, USB and Bluetooth. The sedan gets 12-speaker sound system from JBL and a Qi wireless charging pad for compatible smartphones. Other advanced features are 8-way power adjustable driver seat with lumber support, 3-zone automatic climate control, rear AC vents with temperature control, cruise control, rear window defogger, rain-sensing wipers and keyless entry.
In terms of specifications, Toyota Camry is powered by the same 2.5L petrol mill carried from the older model. This 2.5L engine can churn the power output of 160PS and generates the peak torque of 213Nm. The powertrain comes mated to electronically controlled CVT gearbox. The Camry hybrid utilizes 6.5Ah Nickel-metal hydride battery pack. The collective power output stands at 205PS. There is also a facility of 2 driving modes: ECO and EV.
Safety of its occupants has always been the top priority of Toyota and for that, Camry hybrid version comes equipped with 9 SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, Vehicle Stability Control, Brake Assist, Hill Start Assist control, speed sensing auto lock and electronically controlled brake. Other aspects include engine immobiliser with alarm, smart key remind warning, Front 3-point ELR seatbelt along with pre-tensioners and ISOFIX.
Toyota Camry is available in two variants. The 2.5 G model is available at the price tag of Rs. 29.75 lakh while the hybrid variant gets the price tag of Rs. 37.22 lakh, ex-showroom, New Delhi. Toyota Camry challenges Honda Accord in the segment while Skoda Superb is also a strong contender against the luxury sedan which undercuts it by a huge margin.

As the exterior has been given the sportier and fancier design elements, cabin too receives some evolutionary updates. The new Toyota Camry Hybrid seems to have received a more organic proposition on the inside. The changes include the new dashboard that feels quite contemporary and chic as compared to the previous model. Take the driver or co-passenger seat and you will realize that the dashboard is designed in such a manner that it should give a sense of driving a sports car, thanks to the unique cockpit-type compartment along with devices centrally stacked near the driver.
Talking about the comfort, the front seats are redesigned with the improved ergonomics to provide the maximum comfort to the passengers. Both the seats at the front are ventilated means they blow cool air through micro air cons on the cushion. As the car has been primarily built to be chauffeur driven, the rear seats give the feeling of tranquillity. In fact, it would not be an exaggeration to call it a sofa instead, which can be stretch out by 8 degrees. The rear passengers also get armrest which let you control the AC, audio system and power your devices through 12v power outlet.
The cabin now comes with tan-coloured upholstery and carbon wood finish. The steering wheel is also changed and it now features leather/silver/wood finishing adorned three spoke multi-functional unit. The gear knob is also draped in the same fabric. The luxury sedan also features a 2-DIN touchscreen infotainment unit coupled with 12-speaker system from JBL, built-in-navigation from MapMyIndia, 3-zone automatic climate control and head up display which projects car speed. The infotainment system gives a plethora of options for connectivity including CD, MP3, USB, Bluetooth, Aux-In, Car Information System and DVD playback.
Then there are features that make this car an utter luxury including leather trim on cowl and dashboard with brown stitching, chrome plated inside door handles, kogane colour leather seats and 8-way power adjustable driver seat with lumbar support and memory function. Other comfort aspects include smart entry system with start-stop button, rear power sunshade, and memory settings for ORVM, steering position and driver seat, cruise control, rain sensing wiper, interior illumination and wireless smartphone charger.

Talking about the outer design of the new 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid, the designers at the house has really done a great job in terms of styling the vehicle. The exterior of the car look eye-catchy and has a strong road presence. The vehicle is based on the TNGA platform that results in significant loss in weight. At first glance, everything looks pretty much the same, especially from the rear and sides. The major updates are given at the front. The Camry hybrid gets the very sporty appeal with large air dam finished with black. The car features a mesh type radiator grille and emblems while the bulging bonnet gives the car a bit of character. The automatic LED headlamps with DRLs and smoke finishing enhance the front looks. This shows how much the car is inspired from company’s X-design philosophy.
Moving to the side, new Toyota Camry has ditched the simple beltline that runs across the front fenders to the rear with the more exciting character lines that now highlights the bigger wheel arches. The high usage of chrome can also be seen at the door handles, window sills as well on the tip of the rear bumper. At the rear part, we can witness the features that are absent in the older version such as new taillights with vent extension, bulging spoiler atop the trunk lid, diffuser like elements and revised rear bumper with quad exhaust pipes.

Mileage Running Cost

The new Toyota Hybrid variant with the 2.5L motor gives the ARAI certified mileage figures of 19.16kmpl that is quite stunning. The car also proves that including an electric motor to work in tandem with the petrol mill always makes the wallet happy.

Comfort Suspension

Speaking of the suspension, the new TNGA architecture has enabled a sportier setup in the car. The new Camry gets well-known McPherson Strut suspension along with stabilizer bar at the front and the rear gets the dual link suspension with stabilizer bar. It helps to make the ride quite easy on the bad road conditions and surpass the jerks providing the equal amount of comfort while driven on the smooth road.
The car is an utter comfortable to drive as much as the vehicle with thrice the price tag. The damped suspension and the shock absorber work extremely well and make sure the occupants remain comfortable inside. The cabin is nicely insulated from both engine and road noise.

Engine Performance

In terms of powertrain, Toyota Camry Hybrid gets 2.5L 4-cylinder inline petrol mill that churns the healthy power output of 160PS and peak torque of 213Nm. The Camry Hybrid comes with the 6.5 Amp/hr nickel-metal hydride battery and electronic management system. The motor has the regenerative ability to store the energy needed to run the motor. The electric motor in conjunction with the gasoline engine is able to produce 205PS. The transmission duties are handled by E-CVT gearbox.
The car takes off nicely at low speeds and the instant torque really feels heart-warming. The most amazing part is that the integration of petrol and electric is seamless. In the stop/go traffic in urban areas, the car works pretty well and the CVT gearbox offers seamless shifts during the move.

Braking Safety

Toyota Camry Hybrid gets the amazing braking dynamics, it’s the element in the car that can’t be overlooked and that also plays an important role in manoeuvring the vehicle. The Camry comes with advanced proficient braking mechanism that includes ventilated disc type for the front wheels. At the rear, solid disc brakes are implemented to generate effective results. Features like brake assist, electronic brake force distribution and antilock braking system further enhances the braking efficiency of the car.
For the safety of its occupants, Toyota Camry is loaded with a range of active and passive features along with several driver assist technologies. The car comes equipped with 9 SRS airbags, vehicle stability control, traction control, smart stop technology, hill start assist control and immobilizer with alarm.
The driver assisting features include full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane change indicator, impact sensing fuel cut off, standard blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert and pre-collision system with pedestrian detection.
