Overview

Tata Tiago NRG is an all-new model launched with a new approach in mind. The newcomer is a crossover version based on the standard Tiago and introduced by the company to cash in the success story of the hatchback even further. Tata Tiago is one of the most successful hatchbacks from the folds of the company has Tata doesn’t want to lose the opportunity to make it a cashcow seeing that that crossover/compact SUVs has been gaining overwhelming response from the buyers. New Tata Tiago NRG comes packed with wide range of features, specifications and exciting goodies. Tiago NRG is the enhanced version with a bump of Rs. 28,000 over the XZ variant of the Tiago. For this extra money, all we get is 10mm of increased ground clearance, 5-inch touchscreen unit, lots of black cladding all around and orange accents on the inside.
Tata Tiago NRG means ‘energy’, Tiago hatch is the updated model of the regular hatch. Though, manufacturer has provided the car with many advanced and modern features that makes it quite heavy on the pocket, but for the good. On the outside, Tiago hatchback receives lively and attractive design. The front façade changes includes black roof while the front bumper has been revised and it now receives skid plates on it. Smoked headlamps and plastic elements are there for badging on the vehicle. The side profile gets distinguishing plastic cladding all around the hatch. Tiago NRG now rides on the new set of 14-inch alloy wheels.
At the rear part, Tata Tiago NRG gets some of the changes that are quite prominent as compared to its sibling. Overall, Tata Tiago is appealing and stylish and one can easily distinguish between the two cars. In terms of dimensions, it has been changed as well. New Tata Tiago NRG is taller, longer and wider than the standard hatchback. The car measures 3793 mm in length, 1587 mm in height, 1665 mm in width and gets the wheelbase of 2400 mm. The ground clearance stands at 180mm which has been increased by 10mm over the regular model. Tata Tiago NRG is offered in three different colour pallets viz. Canyon Orange, Malabar Silver and Fuji White.
As for the interiors, Tata Tiago NRG is the revised version of the standard Tiago hatch. The inner profile feels quite contemporary and offers sporty appeal. The seats are quite comfy and are covered with the fabric with denim feel. The dashboard is all-black instead of grey as seen in the Tiago hatch. In terms of techs, Tata Tiago gets 5-inch touchscreen unit, voice command recognition, 4 speakers, steering mounted audio and phone control, SD card reader and Bluetooth connectivity. Other comfort features included in the list are air conditioner with heater, electrically adjustable rear view mirror, keyless entry, height adjustable driver seat, electric power steering, power windows, front wipers, integrated rear neck rest and cooled glove box.
Under the hood, Tata Tiago gets the diesel and petrol engine options. Its 1.2 L 3-cylinder petrol motor is capable of generating the power output of 85PS and belts out the maximum torque of 114Nm. The engine comes mated to 5-speed manual gearbox. The diesel mill is the 1.0L Revotorq that can churn the power output of 70PS and the peak torque of 140Nm. The diesel engine also comes with the five speed manual transmission. No automatic is available even as an option. In terms of fuel efficiency, Tata Tiago NRG diesel delivers ARAI 27.0kmpl and petrol engine returns about 24.0kmpl of mileage.
As far as the safety aspects are concerned, Tata Tiago NRG is offered with numerous features that includes some standard ones such as Dual airbags, smart rear wiper, driver seat belt reminder, ABS with EBD, corner stability control, follow me home lamps and armoured body. Other features included are front fog lamps, parking assist with rear sensors and display, rear defogger, engine immobilizer, electronic stability program, seat belt with pre-tensioners and load limiters, day and night IRVM, speed dependent auto door lock, rear smart wiper and wash and central locking.
Tata Tiago is available in two variants only namely Tiago NRG petrol and Tiago NRG diesel. The price starts from Rs. 5.5 lakh and goes up to Rs. 6.32 lakh. The petrol trim is tagged at Rs. 5.5 lakh while the diesel variant is available at the price tag of Rs. 6.32 lakh. Tata Tiago NRG rivals against the likes in the segment such as Maruti Celerio X, Renault Kwid Climber and Ford Freestyle.

Interior

Though the new Tiago NRG remains the same in terms of fit and finish, layout and the space on offer, there are many differences that sets it apart from the regular Tiago. The changes comes in the form of orange accents across the dashboard and the gear lever while the new upholstery adds a dash of sportiness. Then there is an all-new 5-inch touchscreen infotainment borrowed from the sedan sibling Tigor. However, lack of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support is a bit of disadvantage.
But what is good is that the car carries the same list of equipment that the standard model have. The long list of features include air conditioning with heater, cooled glovebox, steering mounted controls, height adjustable driver seat, front and rear power windows, flip key remote, integrated rear neck rest and tilt adjustable steering. Not to forget, the infotainment do gets the Harman powered 8-speakers music system for thrilling music experience. What makes infotainment more thrilling is the inclusion of apps such as ‘MapMyIndia’ for displaying visuals of streaming navigation and the ‘Juke Car App’ which let the occupants simultaneously connect their smartphones via wi-fi hotspot to stream music.
Besides a chilled glovebox, there are storage spaces including many cubbyholes, pockets on all 4-doors and space near the gear knob. In terms of comfort and space, the car can absorb four adult passenger with ease while the third one at the rear might find it a bit squeezing. With 242L of boot space, it is more than what Celerio X offers and enough for luggage of small family for a weekend getaway. Overall, there is nothing much changed except a few things in the new Tiago NRG.

Exterior

The new Tiago NRG and the word energy are homonyms and the car does live up to the suffix attached. The rugged sibling of the standard Tiago, the NRG cross-hatch features additional muscular elements that are expected in such a car. The modifications at the front include revised bumper with faux skid plate, extra cladding along the side skirts, the wheel arches as well as on the rear bumper and the trunk door. There are new 14-inch dual-toned alloy wheels adding to the sporty stance. While there are understated additions in the form of ORVMs laden in gloss black, door handles with matte-black finishing, blackened roof and roof rails.
These alterations outside has resulted in increased dimensions as compared to the standard model. The new Tata Tiago NRG is now 42mm longer, 52mm taller and wider by 18mm while the ground clearance has been increased by 10mm. Rest, the story remains identical with the same solid build construction and proportions well on the point. The car features the hexagonal grille and angular headlamps at the front. The side profile contains the bold waistline that goes in line with the contemporary cars.
At the rear, the spread-out tail lamps and the elegantly carved out tail gate and the black spoiler lends a sporty appeal to the vehicle.

Mileage Running Cost

There is no change in the engines and the additional elements outside doesn’t put much impact on the vehicle. Hence, the mileage remains the same with 27kmpl in the diesel variant and 24kmpl derived from the petrol engine.

Comfort Suspension

The only mechanical alteration in the NRG model is in the suspension setting. The company says that in order to counterbalance the effects of the higher ground clearance, it has tuned the suspension. This would definitely affect the off roading a bit. But overall the suspension makes the car work silently without any fuss. With independent suspension at the front and semi-independent at the rear, the most road imperfections are absorbed with utmost confidence.
The steering is also light which means peppy driving experience within the city premises. On off-roading of course, the jerks are filtered out quite efficiently.

Engine Performance

Mechanically, there is no change and the car continues to be powered by the same 1.2L 3-cylinder Revotron petrol engine which produces 85PS and 115Nm of torque. Despite the same engine, the company claims that the engine has been tuned to suit the nature of the NRG. And yes, certain modifications have been done such as omitting the driving modes which are there in the standard model.
Moreover, the NRG only gets the 5-speed automatic transmission while the standard model also comes with AMT option. The engine which is also working in the Bolt gets turbocharger and a bit lower in terms of refinement but does delivers what a moderate driver would expect. If you push it hard, the engine makes a lot of noise. Performance isn’t great but if we compare it to other 1.2L mills out in the market, this one is definitely better.
The diesel engine on the other hand, is the same 1.0L Revotron motor that pumps out 70PS and 140Nm of max torque, mated to 5-speed manual transmission. If you want to derive maximum from the engine, than keep it in the right gear. It suffers turbo lag a bit, especially in high gears and at lower speeds which makes overtaking a tough job. The engine is noisy but again if we compare it to other engines of the peers, it is way better.

Braking Safety

The braking mechanism has been sourced from Bosch feauturing 9th generation anti-lock braking system with electronic stability control. The brakes are progressive and wouldn’t disappoint in most conditions. In the safety department, the car comes with dual front airbags, electronic stability program, corner stability control, reverse parking assist and drive seat belt reminder with buzzer.
Other aspects include front fog lamps, rear defogger, engine immobilizer, day and night IRVM, seat belt with pre-tensioners, rear smart wipe and wash, speed dependent auto door lock and central locking.
