Overview

Tata Motors is known for introducing performance oriented concepts but never converted them into production versions. But now it seems Tata has realized the going craze of these vehicles and decided to finally delve into this space with the introduction of Tiago JTP. The vehicle was first showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo with the same full-fledged production package. The high performance hatch based on the popular Tiago comes with some noticeable cosmetic updates, new interior features, revised styling, reworked suspension and more powerful turbocharged petrol engine. The car is being manufactured under the joint venture of Tata Motors and Jayem Automotive.
On the outside, as we all know that Tata Tiago is already the best looking car in the segment. But with the JTP version, it somehow looks more pleasing to the eye with prominent changes. As for the updates, Tata Tiago JTP gets dual chamber projector headlamps along with chrome rings, aggressive trapezoidal lower radiator grille, dynamic fender vents, contrast coloured glossy black roof, all that makes it look dynamic. The car also gets aero vent on hood, stylish black finish on B pillar, contrast coloured ORVMs. At the sides, it gets 15-inch diamond cut alloy wheels and side skirts add more energy to the profile. At the back, Tata Tiago gets different appeal body coloured bumper, LED tail lamps, high mount LED stop lamps and chrome badging. In terms of dimensions, Tata Tiago measures 3746 mm in length, 1647 mm in width, 1531 mm in height and gets the wheelbase and ground clearance of 2400 mm and 166 mm respectively. The new Tata Tiago JTP can be differentiated with the standard model from two colour pallets such as White and Red.
Inside the cabin, Tata Tiago JTP sports all black interior theme along with the premium black finish. The seats are comfortable and are covered with the fabric upholstery that gets red bold JTP logo on the front seats. The steering wheel is leather wrapped with contrast red stitching, instrument panel comes with segmented display driver information system and gearshift display, tachometer with JTP logo, LED fuel gauge, LED temperature gauge. Other techs includes ConnectNext touchscreen infotainment unit by Harman, AM/FM, USB, AUX-in, POD connectivity, four speakers, four tweeters, steering mounted audio and phone controls, speed dependent volume control and Bluetooth connectivity.
Checking the specification, Tata Tiago JTP is only available in the petrol engine. The 1.2 litre turbocharged mill is capable of generating the power output of 114PS and belts out the peak torque of 150Nm. The engine comes mated to 5-speed manual transmission. The oil burner is borrowed from the Nexon SUV. The car delivers amazing mileage figures of 23.84kmpl. The performance car can dash from 0 to 100kmph in mere 10 seconds.
As for the safety, Tata Motors equipped the Tiago JTP hatchback with numerous safety aspects ensuring maximum passenger safety. The feature list includes driver and co-driver airbags, ABS with EBD, corner stability control, seat belt with pre-tensioners and load limiter, speed sensing auto door lock, rear wiper, inside rear view mirror, clutch lock and rear defogger.
Tata Tiago JTP is available only in single variant that is Tiago JTP petrol. In terms of pricing, Tata Tiago is overpriced as it’s a hatchback but paying nearly 74,000 more as compared to AMT version is quite acceptable. As it’s the more powerful variant in its segment. The car is tagged at Rs. 6.39 lakh, ex-showroom. As for the competition, Tata Tiago doesn’t have any such rivals but it has the capability to go against Volkswagen Polo GT, Abarth Punto and Maruti Baleno RS.

Interior

The cabin of the hot version of Tiago isn’t much different from the stock model. However, the company has given some really cool tweaks here and there to give the cabin a unique ambiance. The layout of Tiago JTP is identical but the feel is different. The most prominent difference is the all-new black cabin replacing the dual-toned theme.
There are a lot of red elements used across the cabin. The red stitching across the steering and the seats, the red outlining on the ac vents on the centre console as well as red lining on the floor carpets, all have been tastefully integrated to give the car a sporty look from inside. The JTP badging on the front back rest adds to the appeal. But the most likeable and biggest change is the chunky steering wheel which is wrapped in leather and the most ergonomically fitted in any of the Tata cars till date. It gives awesome grip and a joy to hold with just the right thickness and diameter, in one word ‘perfect’. And in fact, the top half portion of the steering where the driver’s hands rest is thicker than that of bottom half. Further, the carmaker has added elegancy in the form of red stitching and steel pedals.
The seats are identical to the standard model and more moulded front seats with enhanced side bolstering would have been better. Moreover, the high driving position is not good for a sporty car of this stature, it should have been low. In terms of space, the car has enough room for 4 adult passengers but adding a fifth one would be a tight-tight affair. And honestly, these performance cars are not made for absorbing more and more passengers, but to give the taste of fun driving.
Rest, the cabin is same as of the top end XZ variant of the Tiago. The new Tiago JTP features the same 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes with USB, Bluetooth and Aux-in connectivity. The unit also comes with standard apps such as ‘Juke App’ which allows multiple passengers to connect the music system through wi-fi hotspot and play their favourite songs randomly. The music system is amplified with the 8-speakers sound system from Harman. The unit also comes equipped with ‘MayMyIndia’ app which serves the purpose of navigation. The screen also gives information on the reverse park assist. In terms of user experience, the touchscreen is not the slickest or the best in the market today but does the required job.
The car misses on climate control and is equipped with the same manual analogue air conditioner. Other features include cooled glovebox, steering mounted controls, electric and tilt-adjustable power steering, front and rear power windows, height adjustable driver seat, electrically foldable ORVMs and 7-speed front wipers.

Exterior

The new Tiago JTP is a looker and there isn’t any doubt about that. The car is a sight to behold for the price. And what’s interesting is that despite of lacking any signs of chrome, the car manages to grab eyeballs. In fact, all the chrome elements have been bestowed with the all-black treatment, even the air intakes and the vent on the bonnet have some purpose. The vent is not for the show off, it actually help dispel heat coming from the engine compartment. There are apertures at the front which also help directs air towards the engine.
The bumper at the front is all new with embellished air dams and new honeycomb mesh grille giving the people some reasons to stare. The Tata and JTP branding on the grille reveals the entire story. The fog lamps are also enclosed in a bigger grille. Another mind blowing addition is the projector headlamps borrowed from the Tigor which comes in a blackened enclosure. Turn around and you will find nicely done side skirts and faux vents above the front wheel arches with JTP branding are also functional, as per the company.
The ORVMs also get black treatment while there are larger 15-inch alloy wheels shod under wider Apollo tyres enhancing the sporty appeal. The shiny black sunroof adds the dual-tone effect which really adds to the dashing appearance. At the back, again JTP branding can be seen while the rear diffuser with twin exhaust pipes really uplifts the level of this car. The exhaust note not only looks hot and sexy but also sounds sweet. Other things remain the same with clear tail lamps and rear spoiler. Overall, it seems Tata has a car full of character which you won’t find in a car priced under Rs. 8 lakhs.

Mileage Running Cost

Surprisingly, the change of engine hasn’t changed much of the fuel efficiency figures. However, 23.84kmpl is what Tata claims, the real world mileage would be different, especially when we look from the perspective that this car is meant for fun driving.

Comfort Suspension

Though the hardware carrying the car is the same as of the stock version, there has been tuning all around. But carrying the same suspension has helped the carmaker keep the pricing within limits. As per the suspension, the damping has been tweaked while springs are identical. The ride height has been reduced by 4mm and it is done only to prevent the vehicle from losing its ability to handle the Indian road conditions. The wheel size has been increased which now comes with specially build 185 section tyres.
The alteration might not be much on paper, but it does make a difference in keeping the car planted all the time. The setup is well-balanced with increased stiffness while the car floats over road bumps and other imperfections. The ride appears to be comfortable and composed while the steering is also light which is expected in a city car.
Come around the corner and you will witness its awesome ability. The Tiago JTP turns the corner absolutely flat with the nice weight to the steering help keep the movement faster, after all the whole setup is meticulously tuned. The feedback from the steering is more than enough to barb in the desired direction. The shorter wheelbase of the car makes it nimbler and extremely movable. The vehicle also feels nice and planted at cruising speeds.

Engine Performance

Now, the most interesting part of the story i.e. the engine. The new Tiago JTP replaces the 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol motor and sports the 1.2L turbocharged petrol sourced from Nexon SUV. And for purists, this is not just mere a copy paste job, there is something different playing underneath. The engineering team at Jayem are admired for their tuning and with Tiago JTP they did just right that. They took the engine from the Nexon and injected it with a dose of steroid. In technical terminology, the engineers have changed the valve timings while the turbo intercooler has been repositioned with the air intake.
Moreover, to get increase boost on the go, the forced induction technology has been tweaked. This in conjunction with lower back pressure exhaust has increased the power figures by 4PS over the Nexon. Truly amazing. Now, the car makes 114PS and max torque of 150Nm. This is also 29PS more than what the standard 1.2L motor produces. The engine rattles a bit on turnover and even if it is at idle state, the exhaust gurgles feebly but with a promise to give something better ahead.
Push it a little hard and you will witness different kinds of noises through induction and exhaust. The turbocharger which creaks a bit can make up for the blasts coming from within the cylinders while a hoarse exhaust note fills up the cabin when the tachometer hits 4000rpm. The engine is paired to 5-speed manual transmission which has also been tweaked for enhanced performance.
Put the car into the first gear and you will find that the clutch is light. Throttle up and the car and it just pushes ahead waving off the road dust. Though the acceleration isn’t blazing but sufficient enough to keep your back planted on your seat. The second slots in with a wistful mechanical thump but it comes with lots of power letting the car dash persistently towards the skyline. And by the time the third gear slots in, the speedometer is already pushing at 100kmph. The sprint time of 0-100kmph is just 10 seconds which is absolutely brilliant with the car of such stature.
In spite of the overexcited nature when pushed hard, you will find no compromise in the day to day commuting. With super light clutch and the tall third gear along with lot of torque available from around 2000rpm, the car ensures you have sufficient grunt available all the times whether navigating in cities, overtaking or breezing on the highways.

Braking Safety

In terms of braking, the car doesn’t feel out of line as the brakes are absolutely outstanding in terms of feel and bite. Moreover, the wider tyres help cut the braking distance. In terms of safety, being a performance car, it was an onus of responsibility to equip the car as per its standards. And the carmaker has done it right with the safety measures including dual front airbags, next-gen ABS with EBD and corner stability control being the prominent ones.
Other aspects include speed sensing auto door lock, inside rear view mirror, rear wiper, rear parking sensors, clutch lock and rear defogger.
