Overview

Tata Sumo has been there in the Indian car market for ages now. It is one of the initial vehicles that help cemented Tata’s position in the Indian market. The car has been provided with few facelifts and touch-ups every now and then. Sumo is off course the oldest of SUVs and is still doing fairly well in the subcontinent. First introduced in the early 90s, Tata Sumo has been there in various avatars and now in the second generation variant. Its recent facelift provided the UV with different front façade and some tweaks on the inside. Otherwise, over-all design of the Sumo remains the same as older version. In new Tata Sumo Gold, the company has introduced the latest CR4 engine for extra power and mileage.
Tata Sumo Gold on the outside gets Boxy contour that makes it look muscular. Its rugged build-up and the design are directly inspired from the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen but at some places, it does feels different. The over-all design of the Sumo MPV is quite simple with square shaped headlamps at the front. New radiator grille comes with chrome on the upper lip and GOLD embossed on it. The side profile gets big tyres that are wrapped with alloy wheels and flared wheel arches. The side looks identical; however changes with graphics and floating roof elements differentiate it from the older model. At the back, Tata Sumo gets just the extra graphics. No major tweaks can be seen in the design. Dimensionally, Tata Sumo measures 4258mm in length, 1700mm in width and 1925mm in height. The overall wheelbase stands at 2425mm while the ground clearance is 182mm. Tata Sumo is offered in different colour schemes such as Platinum Silver, Arctic White and Porcelian White.
Inside, Tata Sumo offers ample amount of space and can easily accommodate seven people with two additional seats at the back. This means the car also offers an option of the nine-seat layout across the variant. The changes inside the cabin are quite evident. It gets new instrument panel design and four spoke steering wheel. Interior styling is sophisticated with buttons, chunky dials and wood finish on the console. The car also gets roof-mounted dual air-conditioner, power windows and twin dial instrument panel. The quality of the material and the fit and finish has been improved a lot. Tata Sumo Gold gets features like AC with Demister, heater system, power assisted steering, rear windshield wiper, tinted glasses and Rack and Pinion Power steering system. Other features are Voice messaging system, keyless entry, power outlets 12V, music system with Bluetooth integration.
Under the hood, Tata Sumo is powered by the diesel mill only. It gets 3.0L CR4 engine that earlier did its duty in Safari till the year 2007. The CR4 is the latest Tata’s technology that enhances the performance as well as fuel efficiency of the powertrain. The diesel engine is capable of generating the power output of 85PS and maximum torque of 250Nm. The mill returns ARAI certified mileage figures of 15.3kmpl. In terms of ride, Tata Sumo Gold offers excellent ride quality as most of the road shocks are easily absorbed by the thick tyres. The way it tackles the potholes is quite impressive.
As far as the safety aspects are concerned, there are no features like airbags and ABS but the vehicle does offer some of the safety features for the protection of its passengers. The list includes Engine immobilizer, Child safety lock, headlamp beam adjuster, central locking, rear wiper, door ajar warning, seat belts warning, side intrusion beams on all doors and front fog lamps.
Tata Sumo is available in three different variants they are CX, EX and GX. Tata motors have priced the model very competitively seeing the wide range of MPVs dominating the Indian car market. Its price tag starts from Rs. 7.42 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs. 8.68 lakh. Its base trim Sumo Gold CX is tagged at Rs. 7.42 lakh. Next in the line is Sumo Gold CX PS AC that is available at the price tag of Rs. 7.49 lakh. The mid-range trim Sumo Gold EX which is also the top selling model is tagged at Rs. 8.23 lakh. The top end variant Sumo Gold GX is offered at the price tag of Rs. 8.94 lakh, ex-showroom. In the UV segment Tata Sumo competes against Mahindra Bolero.

Interior

The interiors of the car have been vastly improved in the latest version. The facelifted Sumo Gold now gets updated instrument panel and the 4-spoke steering wheel borrowed from Indigo. The centre console remains simple and classic integrating air cons and other switches for controlling rear wash & wiper and defogger. The carmaker has added an aftermarket audio system that is also compatible with Bluetooth and voice messaging system.
The buttons for the power windows are placed close to gear lever, which could be an inconvenient experience for the driver. The car features twin-dial instrument cluster in which information can be clearly read. The Tata Sumo Gold is one of the few cars in the segment that comes with dual AC system mounted on the roof for added comfort. The same air conditioner can also be used as heater. The upholstery has also been revised which seems stylish and does feel better than the earlier model. In short, quality, fit and finish has been drastically improved.
Space is the unique selling point of this car. The stadium-like space is ample for 7 adult passengers even 9 passengers with different seating layout. The seats are comfortable and there is plenty of space in the second row with the jump seats at the back is able to accommodate 4 passengers.

Exterior

The Tata Sumo is more than 25 year old design and since then it hasn’t changed much. The latest update comes with new colour option, more body graphics and more chrome all around. The design is heavily inspired from Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen. At the front, the car features new grille design with chrome featuring GOLD logo on the upper lip. The clamshell bonnet has been retained along with clear lens square shaped headlamps.
At the sides, the story is the same, however, the profile has been tuned with body decals and floating roof elements in order to differentiate it from the earlier model. The car also comes with new 15-inch wheels and fresh wheel caps. But the carmaker seems to have gone overboard in terms of splashing body graphics. The overall silhouette of the car remains identical with the same boxy appearance as ever. A lot of design elements could have enhanced its appeal such as bigger wheels and tyres, stylish roof rails, bulbous tyres and wheel arches and racier two-tone colour theme.
The rear profile also remains the same except the extra graphics. Rest, the elongated tail lamps remains identical while the traditional tail gate now features GOLD badge to differentiate it from the ousted version.
Mileage and running cost
The CR4 technology is one of the recent additions of Tata which helps enhance fuel efficiency right to some extent. That makes the diesel engine capable of returning 15.3kmpl which is quite a reasonable figure for a vehicle like this.

Comfort Suspension

Expecting comfort in these types of vehicles is to sound like a devil but Tata has done its best to provide plusher and comfortable ride to the occupants. This comes as a result of the tuned suspension featuring double wishbone type with coil spring suspension at the rear. The soft suspension has resulted in pliant ride quality at low speeds right to some extent.
The sharp bumps are handled with composure and on the highways too, it shows excellent self-confidence. However, road imperfections tend to disturb it. In terms of cornering, the bulk of the vehicle can be felt as well as the high centre of gravity which is quite expected in such a car.
Moreover, heavy steering, wide dimensions, hard clutch and huge turning radius do not make it a best vehicle for city commuting. However, at tight spots, the small turning radius does help in manoeuvring. Also, the car behaves in a better way while it is fully loaded.

Engine Performance

The refreshed Sumo Gold features a revised engine which is now BSIV compatible. The turbocharged diesel is a 2956cc CR4 motor that pumps out 85PS and 250Nm of max torque. It is the same engine which powered the sibling Safari till 2007. The mammoth torque makes it capable of giving its best i.e. absorbing a bunch of people and moving them around without breaking a sweat. However, if you fast mover, this vehicle is definitely not for you as 85PS would not be enough for quick acceleration. This results in the car taking roughly 32 seconds to reach the 100kmph mark.
And since it’s not made to deliver high-speed performance, thrusting it beyond 100kmph will make a scary situation for the driver. The car is mated to 5-speed manual transmission and the carmaker says that this gearbox now features shorter slots but even if it has been revised, the vehicle still has long throws. However, as far as the shift quality is concerned, it is not that bad if you are ready to ignore the clenching sounds it makes.

Braking Safety

The braking system is neither great nor too bad despite of not having anti-lock braking system. The car has pathetic levels of safety especially in the time when regulations are becoming more and more strict. All you get is central locking, keyless entry, front fog lamps, door ajar warning, seat belt warning, side intrusion beam and rear high mount stop lamp.

Good vehicle with good features. But interior quality i find is not upto mark. The door rattling is there and sometimes the driver door doesnt shut properly. I am tried of getting less mileage also. The brakes are good but after long drive it becomes soft. Many problems with this vehicle. Maybe tata should launch product after service only. Read More
