This is the vehicle that gave Tata Motors a new identity in the Indian market. For a manufacturer that was better known for its commercial vehicle range, the Safari did wonders for the brand. It was first launched in the Indian market in 1998 and since then has undergone many changes, mainly on the inside and under the bonnet. The looks of the Safari more or less remain the same and needless to say, the Safari, thirteen years after its launch, does look dated. The interiors have been refreshed time to time but lack the fit and finish that is expected from a product that costs more than Rs 10 lakh. However, space on the inside is very generous and the Safari also scores very high on the comfort front.
The original Tata Safari came with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine that frankly was underpowered for the weight of this vehicle. In August 2005, the Safari got a 3.0-litre DICOR engine and a 2.0-litre petrol engine was added after a while. However today, the Safari only comes with a 2.2-litre DICOR engine with variable turbine technology and this is a huge improvement over the earlier engines. Infact, the Safari is powerful, quick and efficient and a delight to drive fast. The soft suspension though robs it of confidence while driven in a spirited manner. The poor quality of plastics and niggling electrical issues further rob the Safari of a good ownership experience.
The Safari is available in both 4x2 and 4x4 modes and the prices for it start at Rs 7.96 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base LX 4x2 model going upto Rs 12.4 (ex-showroom, Delhi) lakh for the top end VX 4x4 model. An all-new model of the Safari is expected in the second half of 2011. The ARAI certified fuel economy for the Safari BS-III and BS-IV models stand at 14.34 kmpl and 13.93kmpl respectively.
