This is the vehicle that gave Tata Motors a new identity in the Indian market. For a manufacturer that was better known for its commercial vehicle range, the Safari did wonders for the brand. It was first launched in the Indian market in 1998 and since then has undergone many changes, mainly on the inside and under the bonnet.  The looks of the Safari more or less remain the same and needless to say, the Safari, thirteen years after its launch, does look dated. The interiors have been refreshed time to time but lack the fit and finish that is expected from a product that costs more than Rs 10 lakh. However, space on the inside is very generous and the Safari also scores very high on the comfort front.

The original Tata Safari came with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine that frankly was underpowered for the weight of this vehicle. In August 2005, the Safari got a 3.0-litre DICOR engine and a 2.0-litre petrol engine was added after a while. However today, the Safari only comes with a 2.2-litre DICOR engine with variable turbine technology and this is a huge improvement over the earlier engines. Infact, the Safari is powerful, quick and efficient and a delight to drive fast. The soft suspension though robs it of confidence while driven in a spirited manner. The poor quality of plastics and niggling electrical issues further rob the Safari of a good ownership experience.

The Safari is available in both 4x2 and 4x4 modes and the prices for it start at Rs 7.96 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base LX 4x2 model going upto Rs 12.4 (ex-showroom, Delhi) lakh for the top end VX 4x4 model. An all-new model of the Safari is expected in the second half of 2011. The ARAI certified fuel economy for the Safari BS-III and BS-IV models stand at 14.34 kmpl and 13.93kmpl respectively.

Tata Safari has been around for a very long time now and the design and looks of the car has remained largely unchanged over the years. It has chrome tipped front grill and clear lens headlamp unit.

Safari has triangular shaped fog lamps which give it a unique style statement and the front skid plate gives the perception of the SUV’s off-road capabilities. Interior has an instrument cluster with two oval dials and the central console features a single CD player with USB, AUX-in, MP3 compatibilities. It has DVD screen for the middle row passengers and is located behind the front seat headrest. It also has a huge amount of boot space if you fold the seats up to the middle row and you get 1380 liters of boot space. The 2.2 liter VTT DICOR engine. It produces 140 BHP of peak power at 4000 RPM and a huge 320 NM of torque from as low as 1700 RPM. This motor has a sense of eagerness to lunge forward when required. There is loads of torque and grunt and performance is good but only thing is that its heavy.

It can cruise all day long at triple digit speeds and yet return good fuel economy. The engine has minimal turbo lag and the noise level from the engine are at a minimum. ARAI has certified the fuel economy for the 4×2 variant of the Safari as a healthy 14.34 kmpl and the 4×4 Safari variant has been certified at 13.93 kmpl. Tata is known for its plush ride quality absorbing all the undulations and potholes on the road with ease. It does have a fair amount of body roll owing to the high center of gravity. It has ample stability for highway runs and will comfortably sit upwards of 100 kph which throwing its passengers around inside the car when going over bad patches of road. It is most comfortable in the city where will encounter potholed roads and you can overcome these without breaking your back. In safety it has ABS and EBD. The Tata Safari is priced at Rs 8.3 lakhs to rs 13.2 lakhs ex-showroom , New Delhi and thus is a big and beefy SUV. For a detailed look read below..

Safety

Handling has been improved a lot in the Safari from the old days but massive amounts of body roll still remains. So its best to take the corner slow and the massive size and weight does not help either. Steering is decent and has been improved. It has good brakes owing to ABS and EBD which improves the safety factor present in the car along with ABS for the driver and the passenger.

What we like

Good safety features and handling is improved.

What we don't like

Still has massive body roll.

Handling Braking & Safety Details

Handling

The best thing that this motor does is, cruise all day long at 100 Kmph. The gearshifts are still a bit rubbery as well as long but then the ratios are optimised. To overcome the slight turbo lag, the first three gears are paired shortly whereas the last two are a slight long to help in cruising comfortably. Idle was a bit of gravelly but when the SUV did warm up, the noise vanished. Piloting the Tata Safari around in town is quite a handful. This can be attributed to the heavy front end and the
