Overview

Bolt is the product that has been carved out of the new X1 platform and underpins the Indica Vista hatch. After Zest sedan, Tata Bolt is the one that brought a wind of change in brand perception. The B-segment vehicle was introduced at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo and its launch took place in the year 2015. Bolt is the most important product in the company’s portfolio and is also the part of their plan of launching new products till 2020. The design of the Bolt is quite neat and tidy; it has the appealing and features on par with the rest of the hatchbacks. The successor to the Vista hatch comes in all new looks, revamped interiors as well as a new turbo-petrol engine.
Tata Bolt on the outside is fairly attractive, but it resembles the Indica hatch. The face gets the first swept-back headlamps and the Tata’s signature radiator grille with the piano black finish, company call it as ‘Humanity Line’. The chrome strip is positioned on the top of the radiator grille. Large vertical air vents are placed at the bottom and the fog lamps find their place on black housing. On the side, it gets blackened out B and C pillars with the thin chrome strip running along the window beltline that highlights the side view. Rear part features integrated spoiler, thick chrome strip and flame-shaped tail lights. Tata Bolt is offered in 5 different colours such as Dune Beige, Venetian Red, Platinum Silver, Sky Grey and Pristine White.
The cabin is quite attractive and is bestowed with many advanced features. The car gets white and black interior setup with premium plastic. Steering has been borrowed from Zest while the AC vents are positioned in the middle of the dash. Central console comes with a touchscreen unit, dials for the air conditioner and other buttons. Other features included are height adjustable driver seat, climate control, keyless entry, steering mounted audio control and electrically adjustable rear view mirror.
Tata Bolt is offered in both petrol as well as the diesel engine option for the buyers to choose from. It gets 1.2 L Revotron turbocharged petrol mill that is capable of generating power output of 90PS and yields the peak torque of 140Nm. It’s another oil burner is 1.3 L Quadrajet engine that can produce the power output of 75PS and maximum torque of 190Nm. Both the engines come mated to 5-speed manual transmission.
Talking about the safety aspects, Tata Bolt gets features such as dual airbags, anti-lock-braking system along with electronic brake force distribution and CSC, dual airbags, engine immobilizer, rear door child lock, rear defogger and rear smart wiper. Other features included in the list are central locking, headlamp beam adjuster and electronic stability program. Tata Bolt hatch gives fierce competition to the likes including Ford Figo, Hyundai i10, Hyundai Grand i10, Nissan Micra, Maruti Suzuki Swift and Renault Pulse.
Tata Bolt is available in four variants namely XE, XM, XMS and XT. Looking at the pricing details, the base variant XE is tagged at Rs. 4.94 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 6.0 lakh for the diesel trim. Its mid-range variant XM is available at Rs. 5.66 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 6.48 lakh for the diesel model. Tata Bolt top-spec variant XT is offered at the price tag of Rs. 6.5 lakh and Rs. 7.53 lakh for the petrol and diesel trims respectively.

Interior

Inside, the general arrangement and theme of the dashboard are almost identical to the elder sibling Zest. However, the Bolt hatchback features all-black dashboard as compared to the dual-toned in the Zest. The highlights of piano black and the chrome around the AC vents do make the dashboard appear nice.
One would also feel an improved level of quality and fit and finish, never seen before in Tata hatchbacks. All the essential buttons and switches are within the ambit of the driver and are also easy to operate. The new steering with metallic inserts has really uplifted the ambience inside. The instrument cluster is the same as Zest which does look upmarket with the backlight provided. The multi-information is also comprehensive showing info on current gear, digital clock, distance to empty, fuel efficiency, outside temperature, and the door open warning.
Space is one of the plus points of this car. There is a huge amount of head and shoulder room inside. And not just space, the seats are pretty large and generous. And despite the reduction in length as compared to Zest, there is enough knee and legroom at the back. This also makes seating for 3 average adults quite easy.
As this vehicle is part of the paradigm shift of Tata Motors towards revolutionary products, the feature list should be in-line with the contemporaries. The car gets touchscreen infotainment system developed in partnership with Harman Kardon. The ConnectNext infotainment is compatible with Bluetooth, USB, Aux-In, SD-card and iPod. It also gives access to climate control, voice command, SMS readouts and navigation. Overall, the interior fit and finish and the equipment level are vastly improved than the predecessors.

Exterior

The Bolt hatch shares the same silhouette as of the Zest sedan. However, both these cars are sheer examples of design technique as, despite the same shape, there is no absence of appeal. Looking from the front, the hatchback looks identical to the elder sibling with blackened projector headlamps, large ‘humanity line’ grille that also incorporates brand logo. The chrome lining on the top is also the part of this design philosophy and can be seen in other Tata cars. The bumper design is also the same, however, Tata decided to give foglamps instead of daytime running lights.
Move to the side profile and you will notice that the car is tall, thanks to the increased ground clearance, ideal for Indian driving conditions. The blackened C-pillar gives a floating roof effect to the car and blends well with the rear windscreen. Moreover, the sharp shoulder line and a unique character line at the bottom lend an aggressive look to the car. The new flame-shaped tail lamps and the chrome applique on the tailgate dominate the rear.

Mileage Running Cost

Like the elder sibling, the Bolt is also excellent in terms of fuel efficiency. Where the diesel engine powered variant returns ARAI certified mileage of 22.95kmpl, the petrol-powered version, on the other hand, delivers 17.57kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

The suspension setup in the car has been tweaked to offer safe and neutral handling. It is a bit stiffer than the Zest but the ride quality is still compliant. The Bolt hatch impresses with its ability to mask road undulations and potholes and goes over bumps quite smoothly. The minor body movement will be hardly noticed by the passengers.
Even at the faster speeds, the composed nature of the car is truly commendable.

Engine Performance

The Bolt hatch is available with two engine options. The 1.2L Revotron turbocharged motor is made in-house and is able to develop 90PS and 140Nm of torque. The diesel engine is a Fiat-sourced 1.3L Quadrajet motor that pumps out 75PS and 190Nm of peak torque. Both the engines are paired to 5-speed manual transmission. Looking at the stern competition and the growing demand for automatic cars, Tata Bolt direly needs automatic transmission under the hood.
The turbocharged engine response is nice on tap. There is also a fine bump in the power whenever you want it while the throttle response is also impressive. The diesel engine is one of the quietest we have seen in hatchbacks and the refinement levels are awesome with minimum vibrations.

Braking Safety

The car features disc brakes at the front and drum at the rear with the ABS system sourced from Bosch. Brake feel is quite positive but the vehicle can nose dive unexpectedly under heavy braking. However, the disc-drum combination can bring the car to standstill quite reasonably.
On the safety front, the car features driver and co-passenger airbags, ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution) and CSC (corner stability control). Other aspects include engine immobilizer, speed sensitive auto door lock, rear door child lock, front and rear fog lamps, and rear defogger.
