Overview

Back in early 2000s when the executive sedan segment was still nurturing, Octavia was shaking the auto segment for Skoda at the global level. Skoda resurrected Octavia in the year 2013 after discontinuing the Laura, its alter-ego in the year 2010. Almost six years down the line and this third generation model has proved to be the bread and butter of the Czech automaker in the country. The car has been performing exceptionally well in its segment despite stern competition from the similarly priced SUVs and crossovers. The latest version with host of updates is an attempt to boost its credibility among the league. The new Skoda Octavia offers sharp styling, updated cabin comfort with no changes to the mechanicals.
Talking about the exterior changes, facelifts are typically about revamping the front profile of a vehicle, and this is exactly what has been done to the new Octavia. In the latest Octavia, the headlamps have been given split-unit design which is somewhat reminiscent to the earlier generation Mercedes Benz E-Class. The grille now dons a glossy black finish while the inner headlights working as the low beam sits even with it, almost looking like an extension. The outer headlights which work as the high beam appear like a sliced version of the earlier Octavia. Though the design of the headlights may look a bit quirky in pictures, but in real world, the effect of the design is eye catchy. The all-LED headlights are now underlined by LED DRLs also works as turn-indicators and are pretty bright.
The LED headlamps are also durable and frugal in terms of energy consumption. What adds more to the front character is the protruding chrome lining on the bumper which underline the fog lamps at the both the end. Further, there are creases on the hood that lends it a muscular appeal. Turn to the sides and the remains identical except the newly added 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels which exhibits a new design language. At the rear, the changes are subtle in the form of revised bumper and LED tail lamps. Dimensionally, the car measures 4670mm in length, 1814mm in width, 1476mm in height while the wheelbase and ground clearance stands at 2688mm and 155mm respectively.
In terms of interiors, the major change can be seen at the central console in the form of touchscreen infotainment which has immense capabilities when it comes to connectivity. The unit supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, MirrorLink and SmartLink connectivity. Other usual connectivity options include USB and Navigation. The infotainment with glass panel is more premium with crispy resolution. Then there is revised multi-functional display that lies between tachometer and speedometer offering information in crisp resolution and bright colours. The ac vents have also been restyled for increased visual appeal and better channelling.
The beige interiors and the quality of plastics remain top notch. The new list of features include electric sunroof with remote operation, handsfree parking function, 12-way adjustable driver’s seat with memory function and driver fatigue monitoring system. Other comfort features remain intact including dual-zone climate control, rear air-conditioning vents, engine start/stop button, front and rear seat armrest, glovebox with cooling, automatic headlamps, automatic rain sensing wipers and cruise control.
The L&K edition include a host of changes including virtual cockpit, Piano Black décor on front centre console and door panels and front door sills with Laurin & Klement inscription, programmable interior LED ambient lighting, Canton Sound System (9 Speakers, 1 Subwoofer), 12-way electrically adjustable passenger seat with lumbar support and panoramic electric sunroof with bounce-back system.
As far as safety is concerned, being a Skoda car one doesn’t has to worry about safety cover. The new Skoda comprises of strong safety suite with features such as 8 airbags with dual-front and front-side airbags as standard as before. The sedan offers ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, anti-slip regulation, motor speed regulation, electronic differential lock, traction control system, multi-collision braking and tyre pressure monitoring system.
Other electronic safety aids include front and rear parking sensors, two Isofix child-seat preparations on outer rear seats, acoustic warning signal for overrun speed, dual-tone warning horn, iBuzz fatigue alert, anti-theft alarm, handsfree parking and rear view camera - with display in touchscreen audio player and camera washer.
The new Skoda Octavia continues to get its power from the same set of petrol and diesel engine options. The 1.4L TSI petrol motor produces 150PS and 250Nm of torque, paired to 6-speed manual transmission while the powerful 1.8L TSI is good for making 180PS and 250Nm of max torque, coupled with 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. In the diesel department, the 2.0L TDI motor pumps out 143PS and 320Nm of max torque with the option of 6-speed manual or 6-speed DSG automatic. The fuel efficiency has been slightly improved with the 1.4L and 1.8L petrol engine delivering 16.7kmpl and 15.1kmpl, the 2.0L diesel engine returning ARAI certified mileage of 21kmpl in manual and 19.5kmpl with the automatic transmission.
In terms of pricing, the base petrol version starts at Rs. 15.99 lakh while the top model will cost Rs. 27 lakh. The diesel base model falls in the price range of Rs.17.99 and 25.99 while the automatic version starts at Rs. 20.59 lakh and goes up to Rs.27 lakh, ex-showroom, New Delhi. Skoda Octavia competes against Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla Altis in the segment.

Interior

The cabin is one of the reasons why this is the best-selling Skoda in India. The interiors of the third-generation Octavia launched in 2013 paved the way for the current models of Skodas including the flagship Superb sedan. The dashboard’s layout is clutter-free and the carmaker has adopted a minimalistic approach while designing the cabin. This is a good thing as the quality is future proof until and unless the 4th generation model arrives. And what the Czech automaker has done with this updated version is to fill some missing gaps. The car continues to sport the same dual-tone theme but the use of lighter colour gives it a slightly different shade and same goes for the upholstery.
Further, the carmaker has used glossy black accents surrounding the climate control unit as well as the gear lever. The door trims brushed with aluminium looks more appealing than the earlier faux wood. So, these little modifications add up a lot to uplift the ambiance inside. As with other cars in the VW family, this one has also been bestowed with latest techs and goodies. The new Octavia gets latest touchscreen infotainment with a capacitive touch buttons. The infotainment comes bundled with Skoda’s SmartLink that gives access to Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, MirrorLink and also support navigation along with other usuals such as USB, Bluetooth and Aux-In. The touch response is excellent just like we are scrolling through our smartphones. It even comes with pinch to zoom functionality for the maps.
Coming to the interior space, as the car is based on VWs new MQB platform just like Superb and Kodiaq, the objective was clear i.e. to maximize space inside and at the same time minimizing the weight of the vehicle. And this has really turned the game for Octavia beating the immediate rivals Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla when it comes to providing roomier cabin. The rear space is more than adequate with comfortable seats. The headroom and legroom is ample however, the under thigh support could have been better.
From the driver’s perspective, the addition of 12-way adjustable driver’s seat with memory function can make easy to hop on to the perfect position instantly. The memory not only stores three different driving positions but also holds information on adjustment settings for external side view mirror. Back to the rear, where the ac vents pampers you throughout the journey, the USB charging ports help you juice up your devices at critical moments. The car comes with large boot space of 590L and with the rear seat folded; it can reveal humongous 1580L of space for storing ample luggage. The car comes with 60:40 rear split as well.
The new Octavia has also been bestowed with premium features (L&K edition) giving you freedom of enjoying greater space with electrically adjustable panoramic sunroof. The leather upholstery and climatronic dual-zone air conditioning further enhancing in-car experience. The car also gets new gadgetry in the form of hands-free parking which allows you to park the car in a parallel or perpendicular space. All you have to do is to take control of braking and acceleration and all the remaining stuff will be handled automatically.
Moreover, there is ambient lighting feature which can be used to light up the cabin in 10 different colour options. The top of the line Laurin & Klement edition also gets piano black décor and beige upholstery along with Canton Surround Sound system as well as BossConnect through ŠKODA Media Command App through which the rear passengers can control the infotainment system using their smartphones. Other comfort features in the car include headlamp washer, LED boarding spots, automatic retractable ORVM on lock, push engine start/stop button, multi-functional steering wheel with mounted audio and cruise control.
The top of the range Laurin & Klement edition also gets virtual cockpit which can be seen in many Audi cars. The digital instrument cluster shows the on-board computer in beautiful graphical interface informing vital statistics about the vehicle on the go. You can view the navigation in the digital cluster itself. There is a lot to offer when it comes to storage and utilities. There is a large glove compartment located in the dashboard and when used with air conditioner, it can cool your stuff as well. Then there are compartments at the front doors to hold 1L bottle as well as space for removable waste basket. The rear passengers also get seat armrest with two drink holders. Overall, the carmaker has done its best to enhance in-car comfort and keep it competitive among its league.

Exterior

The most sought after model in India and globally, Octavia’s new version comes up with decent style changes. The aesthetic modification at the front includes the dual headlamp design which not only looks sharp but aggressive as well. The split-type headlamps might polarize opinions but it does bring some character to the front fascia. However, on the positive note, the new Octavia gets full-LED headlamps as against the bi-xenon ones in the pre facelifted model. The fresh headlamps are high in performance and frugal in energy consumption.
The fog lamp cluster has been given halogen bulbs as well as cornering functionality. How beautifully the split-styled headlamps merge into the grille looking like an extension of the same. It gives a butterfly look to the car as well as providing wider stance to the front profile. The bumper has also been restyled and now comes with comparatively larger air dam and also a chrome applique complimenting the width and arrangement of the headlights. In fact, the inner elements of the headlamps are quite reminiscent to the siblings Kodiaq SUV.
The side profile remains the same as of the earlier model except the new 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. There are sharp lines that run from the front adding a dose of character. At the rear, the fenders are slightly wider. The alterations here are also limited with the same prism cut styling elements similar to the Rapid sedan. The tail lamps though remain the same but the new LED graphics and addition of 3D design gives it a sharper look.
The bumper are revised too getting more streamlined with the rectangular reflectors while the crease line in the center makes the rear of the car look less heavy. The exhaust pipes remain hidden from the view. In short, the changes are mostly focused on the front profile which does add some robustness to the overall profile.

Mileage Running Cost

The fuel efficiency of the car remains intact in both petrol and diesel engines with a slight improvement. The 1.4L petrol engine with manual transmission delivers 16.7kmpl while the 1.8L petrol engine with automatic transmission returns 15.1kmpl.
The diesel powertrain on the other hand, is quite frugal in terms of fuel consumption as the manual transmission delivers 21kmpl, the automatic version reads ARAI certified fuel economy of 19.5kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

In terms of space and comfort, though the MQB platform does make a considerable difference, it has equally positive impact on the overall performance. Thanks to the reduced weight, a difference of 60-105kgs in weight between the Jetta and Octavia. And this difference is crystal clear when you push the accelerator and let the vehicle do rest of the job. The rear suspension in the updated model (except the 1.4L model) has been slightly tweaked in order to improve ride and handling.
Where the 1.8L version gets 30mm wider rear track with multi-link rear suspension, the 2.0L model gets an increase of 20mm featuring torsion beam system. In fact, the Octavia is the only car in its segment to get independent rear suspension with the 1.8L model. This is for betterment of the road manners since it has more power than that of base petrol and the diesel models. Coming to the ride and handling, the Octavia is renowned for offering best comfort package since the introduction of the first generation model.
And now in its third generation, it has stepped up the game thanks to the underpinning of MQB platform. The car feels confident on most surfaces with minimal body roll as the suspension isn’t stiff unlike of a sportscar. It offers high level of grip and composure while downing road imperfections. The steering is light at city speeds while weighing up decently as and when the car gathers speed. It also give adequate feedback, however slightly more connection with the car could have been better

Engine Performance

The new Skoda Octavia continues to be powered by the same set of diesel and petrol engine options. In the petrol department, the 1.4L TSI and 2.0L TSI have been part of many other Volkswagen cars such as rival Jetta and has been bread and butter for the company. The 1.4L engine produces 150PS and 250Nm of max torque, mated to 6-speed manual transmission, the 1.8L motor pumps out 180PS while the torque output remains the same at 250Nm. The 1.8L engine can be availed in 6-speed manual or DSG automatic transmission.
The 1.4L engine has been developed especially for the MQB platform has seen a lot of modifications. The motor when kicked off settles in a refined idle state. The clutch is not the lightest but precise in performance, so in this case you need to rev up in order to move uninterrupted. While the low end torque is average, it doesn’t affect the drivability and not as bad as in Corolla Altis and Honda Civic. There is noticeable turbo-lag so frequent downshift is required in the city traffic. In sedate driving conditions, this won’t create any problem, however you would be disappointed if you try to quickly overtake or close a traffic gap.
The 6-speed manual gearbox is slick and you will get accustomed within a short stint without missing a single shift. Though the throws are on the longer side, there is preciseness in the gates and the credit for this goes to the 6th gear. So you can expect this engine to give you decent cruising experience.
While the smaller one is decent for mid-range driving, those who want more punch can opt for the powerful one. There are so many reasons why the 1.8L unit is not only smooth but also hard-hitting when pushed. One of the prime reasons why it provides excellent drivability is the inclusion of multi-link independent rear suspension. This flagship engine is in the third generation now but improved on many levels. The engine as mentioned is good for making 180PS and 250Nm of torque. When kicked off, this engine isn’t the quietest, and a faint whine can be heard from inside.
Dab the throttle and you will notice there is something special working under the hood. The response of the engine is spot on with the brutal acceleration from the standstill position. The engine can rev up to 6500rpm limit without breaking a sweat. The sound of the engine is so euphonious that you would always try to find a way on open stretches to push this car. And adding more to the fun factor is the high-pitched turbo hiss when at higher revs. The performance is undoubtedly the best in the segment and enough to outshine the cars above the segment. Further, unlike the 1.4L unit, the bigger one is easy to manoeuvre in the city with strong torque delivery and excellent pulling power in higher gears.
And with the sheer combination of light steering and DSG automatic, this engine becomes graceful to drive in cities. The transmission is quick while upshifting and is able to engage with the 6th gear as early as 60kmph. The ‘D’ mode is excellent for city driving but the Sport mode offers all the fun. In this mode, the gearbox can hold onto the lower ratios for longer time without upshifting easily. This mode also proves to be eager while kicking down and is able to drop the gears even at the slenderest prickle of the accelerator pedal.
Coming to the 2.0L diesel engine, it is good for producing 143PS and 320Nm of max torque. This powertrain has been tuned slightly different from Jetta sedan for getting better torque range which makes it capable of revving easily up to 3000rpm. The delivery of power is linear which gives two advantages; one easy driving in the urban premises and extra punch while overtaking on highways. Though it’s pretty stress-free to get going at higher speeds, the engine tends to become noisier when it gets passed its peak torque range. At low speeds, there is a bit of lag but the DSG transmission almost clears it out with its quick shifts.

Braking Safety

The car features all-round disc brakes which translate into strong stopping capability. The braking system is not only sharp but predictable and confidence inspiring. And with other braking aids such as anti-locking braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, Brake Assist, multi-collision braking and anti-slip regulation, you have full command of the road.
Other advanced features in the car include motor speed regulation, traction control system, electronic differential lock and tyre pressure monitoring system. The top variants also include features such as dual-tone warning horn, acoustic warning signal for overrun speed, iBuzz fatigue alert, two ISOFIX child-seat preparations on outer rear seats, anti-theft alarm, front and rear parking sensors and handsfree parking and rear view camera.
