Overview

The Micra was Nissan’s first major step into the Indian mass car segment. It was launched in July 2010. In terms of looks, the Micra does turn out to be one of the smallest but in a cute way. The world over, the Micra has been appreciated for its bubbly design lines. Infact, from the outside, this car can easily be called as being cheerful. The Micra is one of those few cars that look better, much better in flesh than in the pictures. The front is short, with the ovalish and bug-eyed headlamps and a raised hood taking the lead. Before even steeping into the Micra, what impresses you (for the top end models) is the complete key-less experience including a wireless key-less entry system.  Step inside and the Micra will make sure smile. The same design philosophy of being cute, circular and cheerful on the outside gets carried on the inside as well. The central console especially looks great and the audio as well as the climate control system are finished in silver.  The car is spacious for its size and car fit five adults without much complain. The 251 litre boot isn’t the biggest in this segment. When launched, the Micra came with only a petrol engine. This 1.2-litre unit is of the 3 cylinder variety which means that the first thing that strikes you when you hit the starter button is the characteristic 3-cylinder vibrations and sound. It doesn’t really get irritating on the move but at the same time, you do miss the smoothness of the 4-cylinder engines (Swift, Ritz, i20) nonetheless. This motor produces a decent 75Bhp of power along with 104Nm. The ARAI rated fuel economy of 18.06kmpl is pretty good. The higher seller is the diesel engine option which was launched in Oct’11. This is same unit that powers the Mahindra Logan, Nissan Sunny (in a different state of tune) and the Renault Fluence (in a different state of tune). This dCi motor infact is one of the best 1.5-litre diesel engines in the world. In the Micra, it puts out a respectable 63Bhp of power with 160Nm of torque. This motor also excels on the fuel economy front with a rated economy of 23.08kmpl. The Micra, thanks to its super tight turning radius, is very easy to drive in traffic. Another point in the favour of the Micra is the driver’s visibility which is much better than some of the other offerings in this price. However, its ride quality isn’t something to rave about and not in the league of cars like the Polo. The petrol Micra range is sold in four trim levels and carries a price tag ranging from Rs 4.05 lakh to Rs 5.35 lakh. The diesel engine comes in two trim levels and ranges from Rs 5.58 lakh to 6.04 lakh. Value wise, the Micra offers a good bang for your buck. For a detailed analysis read below.

Interior

Before even steeping into the Micra, what impresses you (for the top end models) is the complete key-less experience including a wireless key-less entry system. Simply have the key fob in your pocket, walk to the car, press the little black button on the door handle and voila, the car unlocks itself. Step inside and the Micra will make sure smile. The same design philosophy of being cute, circular and cheerful on the outside gets carried on the inside as well. The central console especially looks great and the audio as well as the climate control system are finished in silver. The backlighting for the all the dials and buttons is finished in a shade of orange and once it gets dark, simply adds to the whole appeal. The buttons are of the soft touch variety and though the music system lacks the quality, it more than makes you in the way it looks integrated into the fascia. The start-stop button is hidden behind the steering and until unless you are in the co-driver’s seat, it isn’t really visible. The speedometer console is simple and quite neat with the large speed display in the centre. Distance to empty, instantaneous as well as average fuel economy display are handy features. What lets down the Micra here is the overall quality of plastics used, which are a notch below that of some of the rivals – knock the fascia with your knuckles and you notice the overly hard surface for example. The car is spacious for its size and car fit five adults without much complain. Practical features come in handy as well – for example the the twin glove box set-up though at the same time, omission of steering wheel mounted control is felt easily and the horn is simply too weak for Indian conditions. The 251 litre boot isn’t the biggest in this segment

The side profile gives hints of a retro style statement and infact the Micra is seen best from this angle where its compact profile and cute lines are more visible. At the rear, keeping up with the whole theme, the tail lamps are small and give the rear three quarters a very tight profile. The XV Premium model comes with alloy wheels as standard and makes the car look terrific when on the move. If you are a tall person, you also notice the Boomerang shape on the roof which is purposeful as well. Firstly, it eliminates the need for a (roof) stiffener and secondly, wind noise is also better controlled. All the versions come shod with 165/70 R14 wheels except for the top end XV Premium model that gets 175/60 tyres on 15-inch alloy wheels. The Micra is sold in six different color options.

Comfort Suspension

Cars like the Micra are meant to spend a lot of time in city traffic which also means they will be negotiating bumpy and congested roads. The Micra, thanks to its super tight turning radius, is very easy to drive in traffic. Another point in the favour of the Micra is the driver’s visibility which is much better than some of the other offerings in this price. However, its ride quality isn’t something to rave about and not in the league of cars like the Polo. That said, sharp undulations aren’t really felt easily and the ride does improve a lot with more than one passenger on board.

Comfort and Suspension

  • Rear Suspension

Engine Performance

When launched, the Micra came with only a petrol engine. This 1.2-litre unit is of the 3 cylinder variety which means that the first thing that strikes you when you hit the starter button is the characteristic 3-cylinder vibrations and sound. It doesn’t really get irritating on the move but at the same time, you do miss the smoothness of the 4-cylinder engines (Swift, Ritz, i20) nonetheless. This motor produces a decent 75Bhp of power along with 104Nm – these figures aren’t  really class leading but the ARAI rated fuel economy of 18.06kmpl is pretty good. The Micra being a light car, the engine doesn’t have to work too much to get the car going. Low engine speed response isn’t very terrific but at the same time, it doesn’t leave you a reason to complain. Again, these figures won’t really excite an average buyer as far as overall performance is concerned though where the diesel Micra really shines is the lag of any turbo-lag whatsoever which means puttering in slow moving traffic in a higher gear is easily possible. For example, it picks up speeds from as low as 20km/h in 3rd and 30km/h in 4th - this unlike most of the other diesel hatchbacks in the segment. This motor also excels on the fuel economy front with a rated economy of 23.08kmpl

Engine Performance

  • Acceleration

The Nissan Micra petrol is launched with a 1.2L, 1198cc with Electronic Fuel Injection Control system and 5 speed manual transmission that promise good performance and acceleration so that the car crosses the 100 Kmph mark in just 14.5 seconds and it achieves the top speed mark of 160 Kmph. The Nissan Micra diesel comes featured with a 1.5 litre, SOHC, 8 valve, 4 cylinder, 1461cc, common rail engine that ensures 64 Ps of top power at 4000 rpm and 160 NM of max torque at 2000 rpm through the ver

  • Top Speed

The Nissan Micra has a top speed of 160 Kmph.

  • In Gear Acceleration

Nissan Micra Hatchback (Petrol) can comfortably do 40-80 in 6.28 seconds in the third gear and 80-100 in 6.18 seconds on overtaking acceleration.

  • Gearbox

Nissan Micra equipped with a five speed manual gearbox for its engine.

  • Power

Nissan Micra has 1198ccc three-cylinder engine which generates about 79 Bhp unlike the three other cylinders sold in India. Also no balancer shaft is being used. It has a max power of 76 PS.

  • Torque

Nissan Micra has 104 Nm of torque at 4000 RPM.

  • NVH Levels

The suspension system coupled with rigid chassis give desired stability to the Micra, this also helps the vehicle to go past 130 Kmph with zero vibration.

Braking Safety

The good part is that the steering feel is light and hence the Micra can be a hoot to drive in congested city traffic. At high speeds, the long wheelbase (longer than the Ritz, i10, Beat etc) means stability is pretty good. An irritant can be the low ground clearance of just 154mm. Its also decently specced with safety features as base model has airbag.

Brakes and Wheels

  • Handling

The push start/stop button in Nissan Micra is really a key feature. Powered by three cylinder motors and no usage of balance shafts, some amount of vibration can be felt through the steering, the motor responds well to a jab on the accelerator and the Micra moves forward with no hesitation. Nissan is engineered with fewer parts to keep the weight down so that the car feels nice and sprightly. Its acceleration is impressive enough to satisfy most drivers.

  • Braking Performance

Nissan Micra has front ventilated brakes and rear drum brakes mated with ABS with EBD and BA. It stops from 100-0 in about 3.09 seconds.

  • Safety Features

The Nissan Micra has been provided with a driver's side SRS (supplemental restraint system) airbags that deploys automatically in the event of severe frontal impact, minimizing injury risk. It also features EBD, adjustable steering, electric OVRMs and day and night RVM.

  • Abs

There is option for ABS which stands for anti lock breaking system in Nissan Micra.

  • Traction Control

There is no option for traction control in Nissan Micra.
