Nissan, the Japanese automaker launched the Micra back in the year 2010 with the intention of flexing the hands in the lucrative hatchback segment. But due to stiff competition in the Indian car market where rivals are selling between 15-20 thousand units every month, Micra did not achieve the expected results. So, to stay in the market Micra launched the facelifted model in 2013. The vehicle got numerous changes on the inside and out but mechanically it remained the same. The fifth generation model of Nissan Micra made its debut at the Paris Motor show and it’s a major leap over the previous generation model. The 2017 model looks more stunning and futuristic in design. Recently, the company has launched its 2018 version with mild aesthetic updates and new features.
Taking a glance at the outer profile, Nissan Micra remains the same. The vehicle carries the same front façade with the same body shell and similar looks. Its V-shaped beehive pattern radiator grille with chrome makes it look sportier and bolder than before. Boomerang shaped headlamps is the Micra’s signature feature while the fog lamps are distinctively designed for better appearance. On the sides, Micra runs on the 8-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels that look stylish. This time around, the car gets turn indicators on the ORVMs. At the back, Nissan Micra gets LED tail lamps and new rear spoiler that adds to the style. The car is available in six different colours such as Onyx Black, Storm White, Night Shade, Brick Red, Turquoise Blue and Blade Silver.
Inside the cabin, Nissan Micra gets numerous changes. The new features include 6.2-inch touchscreen AVN unit with phone mirroring. The vehicle also gets new integrated connected technology called as NissanConnect, that gets features such as speed alert, nearby pit spot, Share my car location, locate My Car, geo-fencing and curfew alert. The vehicle also gets push start/stop and keyless entry through the intelligent key and Lead Me to Car smart features. Rest, the car remains the same with piano black theme across the cabin and premium upholstery on the seats which gives it a European touch.
Under the hood, Nissan Micra carries the same diesel and petrol mills. It gets a 1.2L petrol engine that produces the power output of 77PS and belts out the peak torque of 104Nm. Its powertrain comes with just the CVT automatic gearbox. On the other hand, its powerful 1.5L diesel engine can generate the output of 64PS and yields the peak torque of 160Nm, the diesel mill comes mated to 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine gives the mileage figure of 19.34kmpl.
For the safety, Nissan Micra comes with an array of safety aspects. The carmaker has now made dual front airbags and rear parking sensors as standards. Higher variants include features such as Brake Assist, ABS with EBD, engine immobilizer, child Safety lock, power door lock, central locking, rear wiper, automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers. It also gets traffic sign recognition, intelligent lane intervention, high beam assist, intelligent emergency braking and blind spot warning.
Nissan Micra is offered in three variants they are XL, XL(O) and XV. Looking at the pricing, its base trim gets the price tag of Rs. 6.19 lakh, Micra XL Option CVT is offered at the price tag of Rs. 6.42 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 7.21 lakh for the diesel variants. Its top-spec model Micra XV CVT is priced at Rs. 7.23 lakh and Rs. 7.91 lakh for the petrol and diesel trims respectively.
Micra currently rivals against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Swift, Ford Figo, Honda Brio and Hyundai Grandi10 in the segment.

Over the years, the interiors have been refined a lot. The dashboard of the car is well laid out. The Micra has replaced the older dull looking grey scheme with more chrome across the cabin. The car now boasts of all black interiors which has certainly uplifted the premiumness inside. The center console which earlier got chrome treatment has been revamped once again. It now features a new 6.2 inch touchscreen infotainment unit with audio video navigation through phone mirroring.
The car, as usual, continues to sport the same set of seat fabrics and trims. The rounded air con control and the top half of the dashboard remain the same with piano black finish which is delightful to feast your eyes on. The steering also remains intact with chrome studded company logo which does make the car feel more upmarket. In terms of space, the front passengers get plenty of it and there is a sufficient amount of clearing between the driver’s knee and the steering. Where headroom is good at both front and the back, the legroom at the rear is absolutely generous and amongst the best in its class.
The automatic air conditioner scores some brownie points when it comes to chilling the compartment. Other comfort features in the car include rain sensing wipers, lead me to car for tracking the car in parking, electrically adjustable ORVM, automatic headlamps, driver seat height adjustment, push engine start/stop and remote keyless entry.

The Nissan Micra hatchback looks pretty much the same as it was before. The egg-shaped styling continues to be part of the front façade. The boomerang-shaped bulgy headlamps blending with the bulgy bonnet makes the car look cool. The headlamps cluster also incorporates follow me Lights. The vehicle poses the same bolder aggressive looks with the v-shaped grille in line with the carmaker’s current design theme while the air dam is flanked by triangular breaks for the lamps.
At the sides, the car now gets ORVM turn indicators while it continues to sit on 8-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels. The CVT variant poses distinct look with the blacked out roof and a racing strip running down the length of the car. The alteration at the rear is also subtle with the new rear spoiler adding a dash of style. The car continues to sport the LED tail lights with the boot lid flowing perfectly into the rear bumper.

Mileage Running Cost

The car comes with respectable fuel efficiency, thanks to the fine-tuned engine petrol and diesel engines. Where the petrol automatic variant returns 19.15kmpl, the manual diesel version is able to deliver 23.19kmpl, certified by ARAI.

Comfort Suspension

In terms of ride and handling, the car remains conservative. The suspension set-up is slightly stiffened, may be to handle the additional weight of the diesel engine. The car moderately tackles the ruts and dents on the roads quite moderately. While the suspension remains silent, the medium sized potholes do not bump through and the ride feels busy.

Engine Performance

Nissan Micra continues to house the same set of petrol and diesel engine options. The 1.2L petrol engine makes 77PS and 104Nm of max torque, paired to CVT transmission. The car isn’t available with the petrol manual transmission which could be a disappointment for many. On the other hand, the 1.5L dCi 4-cylinder diesel mill produces 64PS and 160Nm of peak torque, paired to a 5-speed gearbox.
The petrol version of Micra sports the same CVT transmission that is working in Sunny sedan. The performance isn’t bad at all and the gearbox has been tuned to adapt different driving styles, however, the focus remains clearly on deriving better fuel efficiency. The car does pulls better once the revs get past the 3500rpm mark, however, the open roads driving isn’t much exciting.
The diesel one has been reworked and the drivability has been improved from previous versions. The engine barely lags in cities and can easily pick up the speed in the third gear above 20kmph without any fuss. It feels like a naturally aspirated engine with the torque instantly available on tap.

Braking Safety

Nissan Micra’s braking ability is moderate and the car stops in the straight line without any problem. This time around, the carmaker has upped the safety aspects. The new Nissan Micra comes with standard dual front airbags and rear parking sensors. Other variants include features such as Brake Assist, ABS with EBD, engine immobilizer, rear parking camera, central locking, rear wiper, automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers. The vehicle also comes with aspects such as traffic sign recognition, intelligent lane intervention, speed warning device, high beam assist, intelligent emergency braking and blind spot warning.
