Overview

The Mercedes-Benz GLS is a full sized super-luxury SUV that follows the same design silhouette like the rest of the German car maker's models. Earlier, the ML-Class was replaced with the GLE nomenclature and now thw GL has been replaced with the GLS. But, this is not just a badge change but a lot of other improvements and adaptive-ness to suit Indian road conditions. The most obvious change is at the front with the GLS getting a new face. The highlight is the full-LED, adaptive headlights that look like the ones on the S-Class. Other changes include a more rounded, muscular twin-slat grille; as also a redesigned bumper and hood that add more oomph to the SUV’s personality. Changes at the rear are limited to a revised bumper and full-LED tail lights which look similar to the older GL from a distance.

The GLS looks a lot more appealing. It’s a design that will make you soak in the details – though it is more muscular and well-balanced, exactly the way a big and brawny SUV. . At over five metres, the GLS is one of the biggest SUVs in the country, and is longer and wider than a lot of other full-sized luxury ones. The large exterior dimensions translate to acres of space inside, and the GLS is one of the largest SUVs, with genuine space for seven adults. The third row offers enough space to seat two people, though getting in is a bit of a task as the second row seats do not slide forward and can only be tumbled. However, the second row is the place to be with its kind of legroom, headroom, kneeroom and, of course, comfort. The rich feel from the plush leather seats adds to the luxurious experience of being wrapped in the back seat. The best seat for the target audience.

Front seats also offer great comfort, allowing you to sink into its the comfort offering excellent under-thigh support. The commanding stance of the SUV also adds to the character of sitting in the front seat. The design of the dashboard is rather dated and has the typical Mercedes-Benz layout but there is nothing to complain about. Top-notch quality is witneessed right from the fit and finsh and the feel of the buttons.

Steering wheel and revised instrument cluster is the first thing you will notice. Display for the latest generation COMAND system is an 8-inch unit that sits on top of the dashboard. The COMAND system comes with Apple CarPlay that is a boon for iPhone users. The ambience inside is courtesy to the mood lighting and one can choose from three colours and five variable adjustments. Features like a large panoramic sunroof, temprature controlled cup holders and electric fold for the third row seats are also on offer. The infotainment screen also doubles up as display for the 360-degree camera which makes parking or maneuvering this massive SUV in tight spots extremely easy.

The DYNAMIC Select lets you choose vehicle settings depending on the terrain you are driving on namely Individual, Sport, Comfort, Slippery and Off-road with each mode having its own characteristics with regards to steering inputs, suspension stiffness or softness and engine response .

The GLS powered by a 3.0-litre V6 diesel motor and generates 261PS of peak power and a savage 620Nm of max torque that is mated to a 9-speed 9G-Tronic gearbox which is quicker than the earlier seven-speed unit. However, downshifts take a little more time than expected but the GLS is no sports car.

Ride quality on the GLS is impeccable and the mammoth SUV can soak in pot holes with utter ease. That said, there is a considerable feel of large speed breakers

Fuel efficiency is something you would not be bothered about for this vehicle but it should return you six to eight kilometres to a litre at minimum in real world conditions. So,the GLS looks better, is better build than it's predecessor and the three-pointed star stands out of the crowd.

Mileage Running Cost

In real world conditions, mileage of the GLS would hover around six to eight kilometres to a litre at minimum. However, with a very light right foot, mileage may improve.

German technology is meant to last so rest assured, the Mercedes-Benz GLS is built to last.

Comfort Suspension

The DYNAMIC Select lets you choose vehicle settings depending on the terrain you are driving on namely Individual, Sport, Comfort, Slippery and Off-road with each mode having its own characteristics with regards to steering inputs, suspension and engine responses. Ride quality on the GLS is impeccable and the mammoth SUV can soak in pot holes with utter ease. That said, there is a considerable feel of large speed breakers.

Engine Performance

The GLS powered by a 3.0-litre V6 diesel motor and generates 261PS of peak power and a savage 620Nm of max torque that is mated to a 9-speed 9G-Tronic gearbox which is quicker than the earlier seven-speed unit. However, downshifts take a little more time than expected but the GLS is no sports car. There is little body roll but nothing to intimidate the driver while turning at considerable speeds

Braking Safety

The Mercedes-Benz GLS is a very good handler, considering the super-luxury SUV weighs over two tonnes. One does feel body roll while taking hard on corners, but you don't lose confidence and there is brilliant feedback from the steering wheel. Talking about the steering wheel, it is well-weighted and you will feel that you are driving a really big car.

In the safety department, it is needless to say that Mercedes-Benz has left no stone unturned and this mammoth comes with safety equipments packed to the hilt. This includes airbags all around, Adaptive High beam Assist, Electronic Stability Program and a lot more.
