Recent Updates of Maruti Wagon R

As we had reported some time back the facelifted Maruti Wagon R was expected to be revealed soon and that time has come now as the new Wagon R has been unveiled. The new Wagon R gets exterior and interior updates which are designed to make it look fresher. We think the front end now looks much better.

This is the best city car you can buy in the market today. It is reasonably good looking, has a very spacious and well-equipped cabin, is powered by a peppy but efficient petrol motor and is now available with a AMT. I have always been a big fan of the WagonR, I have never understood why people would go for Read More

We were looking for a new second car for the family, Having owned the 2008 Wagon R, we were looking for newer options like Beat diesel, Celerio etc. Check all, but couldn't feel the same level (of comfort and practicality in any of the others, so decided we will replace the old model with the new model only. Review of Maruti Wagon R

Overview

Today, the Wagon R continues to sell in healthy numbers and is always among the top 4-5 selling cars in the Indian market in terms of monthly sales figures. It isn’t a very modern or a beautiful looking hatchback – what it easily retains is its tall boy look. The new version has grown in every department and is now an overall bigger vehicle too. Dimension wise, the Wagon R 3595mm long, stands 1700mm tall and is 1495mm wide. The new Wagon R has some changes. The new Wagon R gets exterior and interior updates which are designed to make it look fresher. We think the front end now looks much better. The new grille has become more narrow and the front bumper now has a bigger air dam plus there are new look fog lamps as well. However it is all not just cosmetic as the front upper grille has also been designed to reduce air borne noise. The Lxi and Vxi get a chrome front grille. The Wagon R was always known and appreciated for its practical and roomy interiors. Ofcourse there is acres of head room around and the tall body with big windows adds to the overall airy feeling inside. The upgraded version got a completely revamped cabin which now makes this car look upmarket and classy for this price segment. Getting into a commanding driving position is pretty easy. At the back, with short to medium size front passengers, knee room is pretty impressive.. On the inside the changes are more subtle with the interiors getting a beige/black combo look which again lifts the cabin ambience to some extent. The top of the line Vxi gets beige seats while the Lx and Lxi gets dual coloured ones. The music system has also been upgraded and you now get USB, though you get this in higher variants only. Its also more practical now with a  Push type I/P upper storage box. The new Wagon R is now powered by the 1.0litre KB series engine that puts out 68PS of power 90Nm of torque. With a kerb weight that ranges between 860 and 885, the relatively light weight tall-boy car makes the most use of this engine and doesn’t really a chance for any complain. The engine does have its typical three-cylinder sound (or noise if you want to call it) but in daily usage, it turns out be a fairly capable with a very efficient nature. The car maker claims 20.51 kmpl which is just brilliant. Out on the highway as well, the Wagon R has a stable feel. Triple digit speeds are easy and you don’t have a reason to complain even on hilly roads or corners at normal speeds. The steering is of the electric variety which means it is super light at low speeds. Now this is a huge boon for city usage and this combined with an excellent driver’s view means this is one of the best cars in the segment for city usage. Maruti also offers optional ABS. In typical driving conditions, ie, city roads that aren’t always smooth, the Wagon R does a remarkable job. The suspension soaks up most bumps without making the ride uncomfortable. It is only the bigger obstacles which tend to unsettle the car. The CNG variant is now priced at Rs 4.42 lakh while the top-end Vxi variant will set you back by 4.13 lakh. The new Wagon R in Lxi trim is priced at Rs 3.88 lakh ex-showroom. The cheapest is Rs 3.58 lakh for the base model. For a detailed analysis read below

To summarize, the changes are:

1.       Refreshed Exteriors
2.       Newly designed front Bumper.
3.       New grille design.
4.       Sporty fog lamp bezel design.
5.       Chrome accentuated elegant front grille (Lxi,Vxi)
6.       Front upper grille designed to reduce air borne noise.
7.       Dual tone interior color scheme (Beige & black).
8.       Complete beige seats : Vxi and Beige and black combination : Lx, Lxi
9.       New Eagle wings Audio with integrated USB (Vxi)
10.   Push type I/P upper storage box:  Ergonomically designed in Instrument panel for easy accessibility.
11.   Useful to store cans, ladies accessories and many other utility items.
12.   Day/ Night Inside rear view mirror: Helps reduce glare and reflections during night driving.

Interior

The Wagon R was always known and appreciated for its practical and roomy interiors. Ofcourse there is acres of head room around and the tall body with big windows adds to the overall airy feeling inside. The upgraded version got a completely revamped cabin which now makes this car look upmarket and classy for this price segment. Getting into a commanding driving position is pretty easy. At the back, with short to medium size front passengers, knee room is pretty impressive. The floor is almost flat which aids when three people are sitting at the back. Worthy of a mention are the rear doors that open quite wide.

It isn’t a very modern or a beautiful looking hatchback – what it easily retains is its tall boy look. The new version has grown in every department and is now an overall bigger vehicle too. • What we like

The new look Wagon R looks great

  • What we dislike

The basic tall boy design is same

Mileage Running Cost

The car maker claims 20.51 kmpl which is just brilliant and there is an 8 percent improvement in fuel economy.

  • What we like

Is now more efficient than ever

Comfort Suspension

The new WagonR isn’t just new on the outside or the inside – the platform has been changed as well. This upgraded car sits on a much bigger platform which shows its benefits on the move. It also gets a new frame type front suspension for smoother drives. Further, it gets an energy absorbing body structure for safer drives. In typical driving conditions, ie, city roads that aren’t always smooth, the Wagon R does a remarkable job. The suspension soaks up most bumps without making the ride uncomfortable. It is only the bigger obstacles which tend to unsettle the car

  • What we like

     The ride is improved too

  • What we dislike

At high speeds the ride is a bit jiggly

Engine Performance

The new Wagon R is now powered by the 1.0litre KB series engine that puts out 68PS of power 90Nm of torque. With a kerb weight that ranges between 860 and 885, the relatively light weight tall-boy car makes the most use of this engine and doesn’t really a chance for any complain. The engine does have its typical three-cylinder sound (or noise if you want to call it) but in daily usage, it turns out be a fairly capable with a very efficient nature.

  • What we like

Engine has enough grunt for everyday use

  • What we dislike

Feels out of breath in highways

Braking Safety

Out on the highway as well, the Wagon R has a stable feel. Triple digit speeds are easy and you don’t have a reason to complain even on hilly roads or corners at normal speeds. The steering is of the electric variety which means it is super light at low speeds. Now this is a huge boon for city usage and this combined with an excellent driver’s view means this is one of the best cars in the segment for city usage. Maruti also offers optional ABS.

  • What we like

     Handling feels better and planted

  • What we dislike

Still not as sporty as the A-Star
