Launched in the Indian market in 2008, the Dzire was meant to replace the then ageing Esteem model. The Dzire was based on the Swift hatchback and looked like one from the front end and the resemblance to the hatch model also helped in the Dzire gaining immediate popularity. Infact, inspite of an ugly looking rear end design, the Dzire went on to surprise the industry with its sales figures and huge waiting period. The Dzire comes with the same engine options as the Swift and the interiors too remain the same. Priced competitively and available in a total of six trim levels, the current Dzire might be replaced with a newer version in mid-2012. Till then, read on to know an in-depth analysis of this entry level sedan.

If you have been in the Swift, you will feel at home in the Dzire as well. There are absolutely no changes to the design of the cabin. Step inside and you are greeted by overaly black interiors – while this does help to prevent soiling in dusty / rainy conditions, a black theme doesn’t really give you a sense or roominess. Space wise, the front seats are very good. There are enough cubby holes around and the plastic quality on the fascia is impressive too. The top end model gets steering controls and an integrated audio system which sounds nice too. The trouble starts when you get to the back seats. The rivals like Verito, Manza and Etios clearly have a huge edge here as far as shoulder and knee room goes. With tall individuals up front, space at the rear is best for average size people. A central arm rest is provided but doesn’t have cup-holders. The rear door though can hold a bottle each. The Dzire doesn’t get goodies like rear air-con vents or electronically adjustable rear view mirrors.
The Dzire gets sold in three trim levels each for the petrol and diesel engine options. The top end model (ZXi and ZDi) comes loaded with audio system, automatic climate control system, ABS, air-bags, keyless entry, fog lamps etc.
To summarize, though the cabin scores in the overall design and quality, it does lack on the space front.

Work on designing a sedan based on the Swift hatchback started way back in 2005. The idea was to have a cost effective entry level sedan and hence minimal changes to the platform had to be done. Thus, the Dzire has the same wheelbase as the Swift and the front end too remains almost identical, save for a few minor changes like the grille. The next generation Swift is already on sale in India and we believe the next gen Dzire will make it to the showrooms by mid or late 2012 as well. Side profile remains identical as well though the integration of the C pillar into the boot hasn’t really been done in the best possible manner. Further, the boot has a raised design which makes it a little too bulbous when viewed from the rear. Maruti has tried sprucing up the design with the help of chrome inserts but the fact remains that the Dzire isn’t a pretty looking sedan in its segment. The rear tail lamps have resemblance to the front headlamps to carry on the same legacy of Swift as per the Maruti designers.
However, the quality remains top notch and the lower trim levels of LXi, VXi, LDi and VDi wear thin 165/80 tyres on 14-inch steel rims while the top end versions of ZXi and ZDi get to wear 185/70 tyres on 14-inch alloy wheels

Comfort Suspension

The Swift has always been one of the best handling cars in its segment. It is a true driver’s car and the way it behaves over high speeds as well as over broken roads is very good. Infact, we all thought the Dzire would follow the same steps, but unfortunately, it does lag in a few areas. This was bound to happen as the Dzire adds 30-40kg at the rear – due to the addition of a boot. This means that while driving enthusiastically, you don’t get the same confidence. Turn into corners at high speeds and the rear end steps out, making you lose control. Ditto under hard braking! However what remains is the ability of the car to ride over bad roads without a fuss. The steering also remains perfectly balanced for both slow and high speed driving. That said, we have heard about the car facing suspension issues after 70 odd thousand kilometers!

Engine Performance

The Dzire comes with the same engine options as the Swift. That means you get the peppy KB12 1.2-litre petrol engine and the famous FIAT derived 1.3-litre DDiS diesel unit. The petrol engine 85PS of power and 113Nm of torque. The Dzire petrol weighs between 1010 and 1035kg and this kind of power is enough to give it good city and highway performance. What goes in favour of the engine is its responsive and smooth nature. In metro cities like Delhi, the petrol version gives around 12-13kmpl with air-con usage.
The higher selling of the two however is the diesel engine. Maruti has made the best use of this diesel engine. Though the power and torque figures remain same at 75PS and 190Nm respectively, the way the engine responds is pretty impressive. It does suffer from turbo lag and the punch is somewhat sedated below 1800rpm but once the engine spins beyond that, the Dzire diesel impresses you with its performance and sporty nature. It is efficient as well, returning 16-17kmpl in metro cities easily.
Both the engines are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox which scores high in terms of smooth and positive gear shifts.

    few modification requires in DZIRE

my suggestion that it is a good car but requires few modification i.e. first most demanding is swift DZIRE should be writen on steel stirrup over number plate as in new wagonr, and white colour is very dull look it should be in bright white colour, dash board and interior colour should be light wood colour.
