From the experts

Things We Like in Swift 2011-2014

The Swift has better quality interiors now which look sporty and its also well equipped which is a plus point

The Swift looks fantastic and in its new avatar looks sporty and well proportioned, the 15 inch alloys add to the looks and so do the vibrant choice of colours

The diesel hs fantastic mileage figures and the petrol also impresses in this regard

The Swift always had a comfortable suspension set-up and this one isn’t different at all! Drive the Swift over various terrains and bad roads and it responds back nicely.

Fantatsic performance of the petrol which is peppy in nature, the diesel also impresses with its strong performance

The rally based suspension lends a sporty touch to the new Swift and trust us, the car is a hoot to drive fast

Things We Dont Like in Swift 2011-2014

The new Swift all black interiors are not airy and also the rear seats lack space

The new Swift rear end styling is not as good as the earlier one..

The ride though improved is not the class best as some ohers and refinement of the diesel could have been better

There is some turbo-lag in the disel below 2000 rpm and it does feel lethargic

But still doesn’t provide the stable feel of say the Volkswagen Polo.

Overview

Launched in 2011, the new Swift carries on the same DNA while taking it to a new higher level. There are changes no doubt to all angles of the car but first look at the new Swift, and you can easily pass it on as the previous one. However the long list of changes includes the new bold and stylish design form. The new Swift is 90mm longer and 5mm wider than the older version. From the front, the new Swift gets bigger headlamps that stretch backwards into the body. The bumpers have been redesigned as well and the top end Swift gets tasty 15-inch alloy wheels along with indicators integrated into the outside rear view mirrors. It is the interiors that see huge changes. An increase in wheelbase means that for starters, the cabin of the new Swift is more spacious. The rear seat offers you more knee room, something that was missing in the older version. The design of the fascia and console is all-new and immediately strikes you hard. The central console looks fantastic and houses in integrated audio system (with 6 speakers and USB compatible) and the air-con controls. The overall design, quality, feel and comfort of the new Swift has gone up by a few notches. The new Swift continues to come with the same engines though with a few small changes. The petrol one is the same KB12 unit that displaces 1197cc and now gets Maruti’s famed variable valve timing. The result is a slight bump in maximum power to 87PS. On the torque front, the Swift petrol does pretty good at 114Nm. It also has an ARAI certified fuel economy of 18.6kmpl – brilliant to say the least. The petrol unit is refined, silent and quite peppy, responding to driver’s inputs very well. The diesel engine is the same FIAT derived unit that pumps out a maximum power of 75PS along with 190Nm of torque. Maruti has done changes to the engine to increase its ARAI rated fuel economy to 22.9kmpl now. It is brilliant but still not good enough to match the likes of the Nissan Micra or the new Toyota Liva diesel. The turbo lag remains and below 2000rpm, the Swift diesel does feel lethargic to drive in city conditions. Both the engines come with a 5-speed manual gearbox that is brilliant to use with positive and slick gearshifts. The older Swift was always known for its good ride and fantastic handling characteristics and the new one only improves on these factors. The new Swift also makes use of higher strength steel which in-turn results in a body with higher torsional rigidity. This benefits the ride and handling characteristics of the car and should make the Swift less prone to rattles over a period of time. The rally based suspension lends a sporty touch. There is no doubt that the new Swift is a far better product than the outgoing model. The new Swift goes on sale in six versions, three each of petrol and diesel. While the petrol versions have a range of Rs 4.4 to Rs 5.7 lakh, the diesel versions carry a price range of Rs 5.5lakh to Rs 6.8 lakh. The diesel range offers very good value for money as well though the single biggest issue here is the huge waiting period.

Interior

Though the design DNA has been retained on the outside, it is the interiors that see huge changes. An increase in wheelbase means that for starters, the cabin of the new Swift is more spacious. This was a big grouse in the old Swift but in the new, finally, five adults can sit with ease over long distances. The rear seat offers you more knee room, something that was missing in the older version. Maruti claims that there is 20mm increase in real leg room and 28mm increase in foot-space. The design of the fascia and console is all-new and immediately strikes you hard. The steering and the speedometer console look brilliant and the former also houses the new driver information display – this is standard on all trim levels. The central console looks fantastic and houses in integrated audio system (with 6 speakers and USB compatible) and the air-con controls – Maruti calls it the ‘waterfall center console’ and it surely looks trendy. The air-con vents have been redesigned and there are clever chrome inserts all around including on the door pads and steering wheel. The door pads too have been redesigned and not hold a big water bottle easily. Worthy of mention is the new retractable cup holder in front of the air-con vent which helps keep drinks cool on the move. The seats are redesigned and offer better comfort as well.
Not only does the design impressive you, but the overall quality of plastics is also of a good level. However, the overly black interiors might not be to everyone’s tastes.  That said, the overall design, quality, feel and comfort of the new Swift has gone up by a few notches.

Exterior

Suzuki it seems wanted to pass on the same design legacy to the new Swift as well. They wanted people to easily recognize the new Swift on the road and hence much of the basic design has been retained. The new car carries on the same Swift DNA while taking it to a new higher level. There are changes no doubt to all angles of the car but first look at the new Swift, and you can easily pass it on as the previous one. However, spend no more than five seconds with the car and you notice the long list of changes including the new bold and stylish design form. The new Swift is 90mm longer and 5mm wider than the older version. Apart from this, it also has a 40mm longer wheelbase as well.
From the front, the new Swift gets bigger headlamps that stretch backwards into the body. The bumpers have been redesigned as well and the top end Swift gets tasty 15-inch alloy wheels along with indicators integrated into the outside rear view mirrors. At the back, the car gets new stylish vertical tail lamps and bumpers are new and the execution of the boot gate is different as well. The whole design does look appealing and more sporty though the base versions with thin tyres really look out of proportion as compared to the overall muscular body design. As was the case with the older Swift, the new one too will be modified by the younger generation, with wider tyres and lower profile alloys being at the top of the list! The new Swift is available in six different colors.

There are both diesel and petrol options in the Swift. The petrol comes with a 1.2 K series engine while the diesel comes with a 1.3 DDiS engine. Fuel economy is important and here the Swift delivers. In petrol expect 18.6 kmpl and in the diesel expect 22.9 kmpl. The diesel is of course the more efficient one and the fantastic Multijet plays a big part here.

Comfort Suspension

The older Swift was always known for its good ride and fantastic handling characteristics and the new one only improves on these factors. The new Swift also makes use of higher strength steel which in-turn results in a body with higher torsional rigidity. This benefits the ride and handling characteristics of the car and should make the Swift less prone to rattles over a period of time. The rally based suspension lends a sporty touch to the new Swift and trust us, the car is a hoot to drive fast but still doesn’t provide the stable feel of say the Volkswagen Polo. That said, the top of the line ZXI and ZDI variants come with fatter tyres which aid in handling and the overall stable feel on highways.
The Swift always had a comfortable suspension set-up and this one isn’t different at all! Drive the Swift over various terrains and bad roads and it responds back nicely. Changes have been made to the suspension and this along with a spacious cabin and better seats help in increasing the overall comfort level. The overall NVH (noise vibration harshness) levels have also gone up which basically isolates the passengers from the happenings of the outside world. The LXI/VXI and LDI/VDI models come with 165/80 R14 wheels while the top end ZXI/ZDI models come with 185/65 R15 wheels.

Engine Performance

This was one area where the previous Swift scored very high. The new Swift continues to come with the same engines though with a few small changes. The petrol one is the same KB12 unit that displaces 1197cc and now gets Maruti’s famed variable valve timing – the same technology that is seen on the Maruti SX4 as well. The result is a slight bump in maximum power to 87PS which is almost class leading. We say this because the Honda Brio pumps out 88PS of power. On the torque front, the Swift petrol does pretty good at 114Nm.
We are enthusiasts were anticipating a bigger 1.6 motor from the SX4 for the Swift similar to what Skoda and Volkswagen offer in the Fabia 1.6 and the Polo 1.6 – however nothing of that sorts has happened!

  • Acceleration

Maruti Suzuki Swift has an acceleration of 0 - 100 Kmph in 11.75 seconds in its petrol model in all variants.

  • Torque

Maruti Suzuki Swift’s maximum torque of 114Nm at 4000rpm in its petrol model in all its variants.

  • NVH Levels

The NVH levels are pretty low in both diesel and petrol variant and once the doors are closed you can hardly feel any noise inside the cabin.

Braking Safety

The new Swift handles very well. The front suspension is of Mc Pherson strut and rear suspension is torsion beam. The the top of the line ZXI and ZDI variants come with fatter tyres which aid in handling and the overall stable feel on highways. The new Swift has ABS and the brakes of the new Swift include ventilated disc and the rear are are drum brakes.

When it comes to safety the new Swift has dual SRS airbags at front, ABS with brake assist.

    Excellent City car

Swift is a great city car. I have the 1.2 litre petrol Swift but its not a fuel guzzler. it returns an economy of 12-13 kmpl. Drives well in the city. When I travel with my family, the ac takes time to cool the cabin. It's very easy to maintain. Read More
