This is a good time to buy the S-Cross, after the initial interest shown by people the sales numbers of the S-Cross were down. I was given so many discounts, it was like a dream come true. The Premia edition you see here is not an official variant - it is just a name given by the dealer - but Read More

Review of Maruti S-Cross

UPDATED: Read detailed roadtest of the S-Cross (click to read)

With the S-Cross, Maruti has forayed into the premium crossover segment and in doing so has pioneered the segment in India as well. At 4,300mm in length, the Maruti S-Cross is longer than all other mass market hatchbacks in India. It measures in at 1,765mm in width, 1,590mm in width and has a wheelbase of 2,600mm. Suzuki has also upped the ground clearance of the S-Cross to 180mm for the India spec model. Do not mistaken though, as the S-Cross is no off-road buggy and it does not come loaded with the all-wheel drive system found on the international model either. But then again, all most of all of India does not deal with snow in the winters for the need of an all-wheel drive system for daily use.

So what is the S-Cross all about for India then? Well for one, this is truly a premium offering from Maruti Suzuki. Build quality, interior trim and fit and finish are the best seen on a mass segment Maruti till date. The car also comes loaded with equipment and the cabin is a spacious one to be in. This car takes Maruti’s mass market game a notch forward in every aspect and is truly a well rounded vehicle.

Taking the game further is the fact that Maruti has also introduced a new engine in India under the hood of the S-Cross in the form of the 1.6 litre DDiS diesel engine. A unit that has the potential to power bigger Maruti’s in the future.

As a spacious, powerful, fun to drive, well equipped, safe and premium offering the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross caters to a niche clientele in its segment. Backed by the company’s large sales and service network, the Maruti S-Cross is an able automobile that takes the brand forward on all counts.

The interiors of the S-Cross feel premium with its dual tone interiors, soft touch plastics, upmarket switchgear and leather upholstery. The cabin is spacious and offers ample knee, head and shoulder room for both front and rear seat occupants. The boot is also spacious with a capacity of 354 litres.

  • What we like

    Upmarket trim. Space.

  • What we dislike

    Seats could be more supportive.

The S-Cross has a nice profile that stands out of the crowd as a large and well balanced hatchback. That said, the stubby grille and placement of head lamps gives it a rather bemusing appearance.

  • What we like

    Well balanced profile.

  • What we dislike

Certain design appearance may not appeal to all.

Mileage running cost

The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross DDiS 200 comes with an ARAI rating of 23.65 km/l while the DDiS 320 model has an ARAI rating of 22.7 km/l.

  • What we like

Good efficiency from 1.6 motor considering its power output.

  • What we dislike

1.3 motor could be more efficient.

Comfort suspension

The S-Cross has a confident ride and good handling traits. The ride is comfortable over most  surfaces and its only large potholes that unsettle the car.

  • What we like

    Good overall comfort.

  • What we dislike

    Large pothole unsettle the car.

Engine performance

Both DDiS engines have a free revving nature for diesel units. They are refined and offer good overall driveability. 1.6 feels peppy but has some turbo lag at initial revs.

  • What we like

    Eager engines.

  • What we dislike

    Turbo lag evident in 1.6

Braking safety

The S-Cross has a planted stance and takes corners in a determined manner. High speed braking is well balanced too.

  • What we like

    Confident handler. Strong brakes.

  • What we dislike

    Undulations can unsettle while cornering.
