Maruti Suzuki launched Esteem as a replacement of Maruti 1000 in 1998. Esteem was the beginning of a new era for Maruti as Esteem fetched a hoard of customers. Esteem when launched came with a 1298cc petrol engine which produced 85bhp/6000rpm and 110Nm of torque at 4500rpm which was good enough for taking the car up to a top whack of 145kmph. The petrol motor was very good and took all the beating with ease, the same motor was carried on to the Suzuki Swift later on. Maruti also introduced a 1527cc diesel engine later on which produced 57bhp/5000rpm and 85Nm of maximum torque at2250rpm. Esteem diesel was an excellent performer but at the same time it returned brilliant fuel efficiency, in city it returned 16kmpl and on the highways it returned 24kmpl. Esteem is a very well balanced car with a mixture of balanced comfort and handling. Take it to a corner and it obeys the orders without making the driver and the passengers uncomfortable and also on the straights it feels planted and calm. Maruti Suzuki stopped making Esteem in 2008 due to the low demands and outdated design.
Maruti cars always fetch good value in the used car market and same is the case with esteem. A used Esteem can be bought for a price range of 50000-200000INR. Spare parts and service are handled by Maruti so they should not be a concern for the buyer.

Pros Good comfort, great price
Cons High maintenence
I recently sold my esteem after 8 years of ownership. Its been a terrific car all through...in terms of comfort, fuel economy. At the price i felt it was a great deal, especially when i compared it to the likes of the ikon etc. I had bought it when technology wasnt all that great...so I did have a lot of technical issues which just made the entire maintenence cost go up. But am told that the recent ones are perfectly comparable to its peers
