Overview

The under-4 meter space has been the area of focus of most manufacturers now and for many it has been a curveball. Mahindra is one of them who tried its hands under the sub-4 meter space and didn’t bother about the results. After the loose response from Verito and Quanto in the space, Mahindra didn’t stop there. The company introduced TUV300 and banking high on its success, the carmaker came with another offering NuvoSport in the segment. In simple words, we can call it the facelifted version of the discontinued old Quanto. The NuvoSport compact SUV sits at the highest position of the sub-four meter range from the best UV makers. The vehicle features masculine front design and spacious interiors that have the space to accommodate 7 passengers. Mahindra brought the car in the AMT avatar for the urban SUV buyers who need the accessibility of automatic in the city as well. The vehicle comes loaded with various advanced features and an aggressive look. All in all Mahindra NuvoSport offers refined engine, updated interiors and exteriors, decent service backup and class leading cabin space.
At the outside, Mahindra NuvoSport features aggressive and masculine looks. The outer profile is based on the new Scorpio ladder frame. The front end gets boxy design that is created by the high set radiator grille and huge air dams at the base. The headlamps are crapped by strips of the LED lamps while the fog lamps are placed at the bottom end of both the sides. On the sides, the NuvoSport gets the cladding all around just like the Quanto. The car rides on the new 16-inch alloy wheels. The rear part features vertically stacked tail lamps, integrated spoiler and mounted spare wheel. In terms of dimensions, Mahindra NuvoSport is 3985mm long, 1870mm high and 1850mm wide while the wheelbase stands at 2760mm. Mahindra NuvoSport is offered in vibrant colours such as Rust Orange, Diamond White, Mist Silver, Molten Red, Fiery Black and Regal Blue.
The interiors in Mahindra NuvoSport will definitely remind of the Quanto of yesteryears. The car is quite spacious and offers 5+2 seating layout for better comfort. The vehicle offers amazing shoulder and legroom for the passengers at the front and back. The car gets visible resemblance with the Mahindra vehicles, the layout of dashboard reminds of the sibling TUV300. The cabin features the attractive dual tone black and grey colour theme. Techs included in the vehicle are 6.2-inch infotainment unit with Bluetooth, AUX and USB, 2-DIN audio system, Micro Hybrid technology and Driver information system (DIS). Other comfort features are electrically adjustable rear view mirror, air conditioner with heater, steering mounted audio control, cruise control, rear parking sensor, height adjustable driver seat, first and second row mobile charging point, 2nd row 60:40 split, flexible 3rd row, driver and co-passenger lumbar support and rear wash & wipe.
Mahindra NuvoSport is available only with the diesel engine option. The 1.5L 3-cylinder mHawk diesel mill is capable of generating the power output of 100bhp and belts out the maximum torque of 240Nm. The powertrain comes in the choices of five-speed manual gearbox and AMT transmission. The AMT option is offered on the N6 and N8 variant only while the rest comes with manual transmission. The claimed ARAI certified mileage figures for the manual as well as the Automatic transmission stands at 17.45kmpl.
In terms of safety, Mahindra has included various key aspects in the NuvoSport. The list covers safety aspects like airbags for the driver and co-passenger, ABS with EBD, collapsible steering column, anti-theft warning, digital immobiliser, seat belt reminder lamp, auto door lock while driving, child lock, central locking and headlamp beam adjuster.
Mahindra NuvoSport is available in six different variant they are N4, N4 plus, N6, N6 AMT, N8 and N8 AMT. The base N4 variant is available at the starting price tag of Rs. 7.77 lakh while the N4 Plus is tagged at Rs. 8.17 lakh. The mid-range trim N6 is offered at the price tag of Rs. 8.87 lakh while its AMT variant is available at the price of Rs. 9.52 lakh. Mahindra NuvoSport’s top selling trim N8 is tagged at Rs. 9.65 lakh while the top of the range N8 AMT is offered at the price tag of Rs. 10.26 lakh, ex-showroom. Mahindra NuvoSport currently fights against the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon in the segment.

Interior

The interiors of Mahindra NuvoSport are nearly identical to the ousted Quanto, especially if we look at the placement and design of air cons. There are subtle differences which gives the car its own unique appearance. Starting with the steering, it is slightly large but ideally a smaller in diameter could have been better. The 6.2 inch infotainment display housed in a blackened centre console has been carried forward from Ssangyong Rexton. The unit gives info on temperature and gear changes besides usual goodies of navigation, USB, Bluetooth and Aux-In as well as iPod connectivity. The clocks are huge and very well readable.
The space inside is highest in the under-4 meter category, as claimed by Mahindra. And the credit goes to the wheels which have been stretched apart from each other offering more space inside. Many will find the position of the driving high as compared to other vehicles in the segment, one need to climb on the seat for having the proper view of the road ahead. Thankfully, the driver’s seat comes with height adjust functionality. In terms of storage, Mahindra is offering 1L bottle space at each door and a lot of cubbyholes.
The arrangement of seats needs special mention here. The first and middle row gets armrests while the jump seats can be tumbled down to make way for the second row seats further behind for more legroom space. For creating more boot space, the seats in the second or middle row can also be overturned forward along with folding up of jump seats. This practically creates more than double the space in the boot from 412L to 850L. The plastic quality is good but Mahindra could have given more to increase the value quotient. But still feeling is good while the leatherette seats enrich the experience inside besides offering decent comfort.
In terms of features, the compact SUV gets usual set of aspects including electrically adjustable ORVM, height adjustable seat belts, cruise control and 2-DIN audio system for lower variants. The chunky steering wheel now comes with mounted audio controls for music and phone. The carmaker has also updated the instrument cluster which now also displays info such as the duration of the vehicle ran with AC on. Further, there is Power/Eco mode button that allows the driver to maximize fuel economy with start/stop micro hybrid technology. The AC also features eco-mode which is a nice addition. Overall, the car scores high on practicality but misses on quality.

Exterior

First thing first, the NuvoSport is not just a redesigned Quanto, there is more to the story. As per Mahindra, the car shares only a few body panels and some other parts while the engine and chassis are poles apart. Apparently, one would think why Mahindra has introduced NuvoSport when there is already TUV300 in the line-up. But the carmaker has already made it clear that both the products are meant for different league of buyers despite being the 7-seater vehicles and falling under 4 meter.
Though one would still find the styling of the NuvoSport a bit quirky, especially the narrow snout and the tall stance, but it is more digestible as compared to Quanto. The biggest change at the front is the revised fascia, it doesn’t remind us of old Xylo. One of the most noticeable elements at the front is the LED daytime running lights which looks like eyebrows placed over the headlights. The toothy grille housing vertical slats and air vent on the hood along with large bumper gives the car more butch looks.
The side seems to have failed in keeping the same aura of the front. It visually remains unchanged giving the feeling of a soft profile. However, there is healthy dose of cladding as you will find in most SUVs of today. The side profile overall still looks like a Xylo with chopped bumps. The new 16-inch alloy wheels are nice and proportional to the vehicle. It’s the rear which reminds us of Quanto. The elements such as taillamps enclosure, curved rear and mounted spare wheel are all carried from the Quanto. The tail lamps however, have smoky elements.
Overall, the vehicle does look more appealing than the earlier Quanto which followed the traits of the Xylo, something that distracted the buyers who desired for a compact sports utility vehicle.

Mileage Running Cost

The carmaker claims that the SUV can return ARAI certified mileage of 17.45kmpl. The company further asserts that given the capacity of 60L of fuel, it can do Mumbai to Goa return trip in one go. But in real world, expect the fuel efficiency figures to hover around 15kmpl, which is still acceptable given the nature of the car.

Comfort Suspension

In terms of ride quality, it’s a typical Mahindra. The car underpins the third generation chassis of the Scorpio with body on frame unit. This is definitely a huge transformation when we compared it to Quanto. And you will feel the difference while handling the car on road. The NVH levels are well under control and so the body roll with the car feeling more confident while changing the directions.
However, when it comes to attacking corners, here the NuvoSport lags behind the competition. The double wishbone and coil spring suspension at the front and multilink with coil springs at the rear have been tweaked by Cayman and this tuning is reflected in the ride and balance which seems to be perfect. Due to soft suspension, at low speeds the car even out the harsh bumps and potholes with ease.
Overall, the ride quality and supple in the NuvoSport and most of the time, it won’t let you complain.

Engine Performance

The compact SUV is powered by 1.5L mHawk 100 diesel engine which is the same working in TUV300. However, it has been tweaked to produce more horses. The engine bulges out 101PS and 240Nm of max torque, which is the best in the category it falls in. The engine at the lower rev is quite responsive and is quick at gathering momentum which is brilliant in terms of driving the car in cities. The transmission duties are either handled by 5-speed manual or optional 5-speed AMT, depending on the variant you choose.
The clutch in the manual variant is light and should be providing improved drivability within city premises, given how well-space the gear ratios are. Driving the automated variant will let you quickly realize that how easy is to potter around the city. However, as the case with most AMTs, the only frustrating aspect is the lag between shifts with the gears taking a second to reflect the changes. With steady driving, the AMT NuvoSport won’t be a problem but if you are looking extracting performance out of it, better you don’t choose the automatic variant.
The power delivery is linear with minimal turbo lag. Driving on highways gives you enough amount of torque and won’t leave the car breathless. However, you should not depend on it when it comes to overtaking, plan well in advance if you are keen on leaving behind the vehicle moving in front of you.

Braking Safety

The braking power is satisfactory but the pedal slightly lacks feedback and one would also feel a little falling under hard braking. In terms of safety, the dual airbags, ABS with EBD are standard across the variants except the base variant in which these features are optional.
Other safety aspects in the car include collapsible steering column, digital immobilizer, side intrusion beams, auto-door lock while driving, seat belt with height adjuster, seat belt reminder and front fog lamps. The car also comes with intellipark reverse assist helping you manoeuvre the car in the parking space easily.
