Overview

Mahindra Marazzo is the first attempt from the homegrown automaker in the lucrative MPV segment. Mahindra has designed this vehicle to muffle the liking of Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Innova Crysta. The car which slots in between these two vehicles gets lots of amazing features, aggressive styling and safety aspects in the most competitive price tag. In short, the MPV caters to value-for-money car buyers. The vehicle is mainly designed to offer comfort to its occupants through long journeys. The overall design of the vehicle is the result of Mahindra Design Studio and Italian design house Pininfarina that plays the important role to shape the appearance. It’s a well-packed MPV with ample amount of space, impressive feature list that is the result of amazing engineering. It is also the first vehicle to be created by Mahindra’s North American design center located in Michigan, USA. It’s not just an all-new vehicle, but a fresh design philosophy of the carmaker that would shape the future of its upcoming models.
On the outside, Mahindra Marazzo MPV seems to get its design inspired by a shark. One can easily realize the sharp design as the car features a bold front profile with ‘shark tooth’ radiator grille taking the centre stage, verged by the set of large wraparound headlamps. Mahindra Marazzo gets short bonnet and tall roofline that provides the vehicle with a prominent stance. On the sides, MPV gets 16-inch alloy wheels on the base trim while the top-ranging model M8 rides on 17-inch alloys. At the back, MPV gets high-set tail lamp that gives the vehicle an angular design. In terms of dimensions, Mahindra Marazzo measures 4585mm in length, 1774mm in height, 1866mm in width and gets the wheelbase of 2760mm. The boot space stands at 190L and it can further expand to 680L through rear seat folding functionality. Mahindra Marazzo comes in six different colour patterns namely: Iceberg White, Mariner Maroon, Oceanic Black, Aqua Marine, Poseidon Purple and Shimmering Silver.
Inside the cabin, Mahindra Marazzo gets gloss black finished dashboard and beige themed cabin. The MPV has comfortable seats for six occupants and gets adjustable middle row. Cabin is quite large and spacious with three-row layout. The seats are covered with leather upholstery which is impressive. In terms of tech, Marazzo MPV gets 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also gets 4.2-inch TFT MID display that is bathed in the sea of purple giving a lot of driving information. Mahindra Marazzo gets separate air conditioning units for the second as well as third row. Other convenient features included in the MPV are centre console, steering mounted audio control, sunshade and rear parking camera.
Talking about the engine, Mahindra marazzo MPV is powered by new 1.5L diesel engine that is capable of generating the power output of 121PS and the maximum torque of 300Nm. The vehicle comes mated to 6-speed manual gearbox while the automatic one will accompany later. The MPV offers ARAI certified mileage of 17.3kmpl but real world mileage could be around 12kmpl.
Checking out on the safety aspects, Mahindra Marazzo comes loaded with array of safety features for the protection of its occupants. The list includes dual airbags, passenger airbag off switch, ISOFIX Child seat mount, ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution, child safety lock, rear parking sensors, speed sensing auto door lock, car theft alarm, engine immobilizer, door ajar warning, cornering lamps, crumple zones for crash protection and emergency call.
Mahindra Marazzo is available in four trims such as M2, M4, M6 and M8. As far as the pricing is concerned, Mahindra Marazzo base variant M2 is tagged at Rs. 9.99 lakh. The M2 8Str model is available at the price tag of Rs. 10.04 lakh. Marazzo’s mid-range trim M4 is tagged at Rs. 10.95 lakh while its M4 8Str is priced at Rs. 11.0 lakh. Marazzo M6 is offered at the price tag of Rs. 12.4 lakh and M6 8Str is tagged at Rs. 12.45 lakh. The top of the range variant M8 is tagged at Rs. 13.9 lakh.
Mahindra Marazzo has been launched to crack the segment which has been locked by Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Innova Crysta. Other competitors include Renault Lodgy and Honda BR-V. While people still have faith in Innova and Ertiga, Mahindra which is a dominant player in the SUV segment might be able to impress the new customers with its new design philosophy.

Interior

Step inside and you will realize that the carmaker has put plenty of efforts to keep you pampered. Though the design is restrained and subdued when we compared it to XUV500, but the attention to minute details will surely catch your eyeballs. First, the cabin design is something you haven’t seen in MPVs. The dashboard has been cleverly laid combining the beige and piano black colour theme with silver highlights. It seems the design is functional and neat.
The center console features a new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment and the buttons for the climate control system of the front passengers. However, there is no separate display for the climate control, this means that the large portion of huge screen space will be taken up by the air condition display every time you want to make changes to temperature or fan speed. But the display is pretty much slick and crispy. The touchscreen infotainment is compatible with Android Auto Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth. Mahindra has given bending guide lights feature in the reverse camera display which makes parking of this long and wide MPV quite easy.
The gear lever has been placed on the center console like a boss which also makes reach easy helping the driver sail through crowded traffic like a breeze. This comes as an advantage as the engine is comparatively quite smaller and lacks the appropriate grunt required in driving with higher gears in rush-hour traffic. Another unique feature at the front is the placement of the conversation mirror near the cabin lights which makes the monitoring of the passengers quite easy.
However, the unusual placement of 2 USB ports, Aux-In and 12V plug-in sockets makes their access difficult. In terms of practicality, there are plenty of storage space and cubbyholes including two large cup holders and all doors having 1L bottle holding capacity. Moreover, the pair of cup holders located between the front seats can be removed to reveal a deep box storage that comes with a tambour cover. The carmaker has given a large cooled glovebox while there is also a deep storage on the top of the dashboard. The rear passengers get only a single USB port for charging.
Ingress and egress is not so difficult as compared to similar cars in the segment, especially Renault Lodgy. Owners of an MPV really wants to pack the family and go for longer distances, hence seats have to be comfortable. In this department, Mahindra comes with flying colours. Regardless of the rows, seats are comfortable across the cabin, yes, even at the third row. The top variant offers captain seats in the second row which are comfortable even when the driver pushes his seat back at the maximum.
Also, Marazzo is the only vehicle besides Tata Hexa to offer deployable sunshades in the second row. Though the space at the third row is sufficient to absorb three occupants, the only issue is the right side passenger’s armrest is not adequate. This is because the plumbing for the air conditioner goes through that side. For customers who want extra seat, for them there is a 60:40 split folding functionality which makes it an 8-seater MPV. In terms of luggage, the MPV is able to hold couple of bags and even if you fold up all the seats, there is still not much space as compared to Innova Crysta.
The steering wheel houses several controls for the multi-information display, multimedia as well as buttons for cruise control. The 4.2 inch MID behind the steering has been immersed in purple with a neat display. The instrument shows plenty of information including details of the trip, fuel gauge, navigation, fuel consumption, low fuel alert and other warnings. Another first in class feature is the aircraft-styled roof-mounted air conditioner. This is the industry-first surround cooling system. The air vents in the system directs the air in a focused manner like any other car. There is also a Diffuse mode which let the air conditioner blow the air in a gentler manner, which is good for long trips.

Exterior

Though the styling of the car is undoubtedly of an MPV, the SUV traits can be seen across the vehicle. The new Marazzo derives its design inspiration from the predator of the oceans ‘shark’ and in fact, the badge ‘Marazzo’ in Basque language means ‘shark’. The homegrown automaker has been astute in designing the looks of the MPV, the aim is clearly seen in targeting the private buyers instead of the fleet owners. The front profile poses a daunting look which has been decisively given to appeal the SUV buyers.
The ‘look at me’ factor comes from the ‘shark inspired’ jagged grille, huge dual-barrel headlights with LED eyebrows, large foglamps with LED DRLs above them and the black cladding across. The top variants come loaded with projector headlamps. There are also cornering lamps placed alongside which is a good move by the carmaker. Coming to the side profile, some people are hurling accusation that the car looks like the older Innova but as far as an MPV is concerned, every carmaker aims to provide as much space as possible within the limited dimensions. So here Mahindra couldn’t do much however, the aerodynamic design has prevented the boxy looks which could have been a disaster in the first attempt.
Moreover, the window line and the roofline have been carved in such a way that it seems to be complementing the shark body design language. Where the 17-inch double toned alloy wheels raises the premiumness, the boomerang-styled crease on the other hand, enhances the dynamic appeal. Come to the rear and the shark-like element is further evident in the form of tail lamps which does looks like a shark’s tail.
Moreover, Mahindra has done its homework quite cleverly in removing the boring MPV appeal by reducing the amount of mass. This is evident from the addition of thick chrome strip beneath the huge windshield and black cladding on the bumper reducing the amount of body-coloured panels. The exhaust pipes have been nicely hidden away from the view. So Mahindra hasn’t gone overboard with the styling and the car draws a fine line between an SUV and an MPV.

Mileage Running Cost

Mahindra has incorporated many things in the vehicle to derive maximum fuel efficiency from the sole diesel engine. It includes EcoSense mode which reduces the power delivery to 100PS which eventually leads to better fuel efficiency. The new Mahindra Marazzo can return ARAI certified mileage of 17.3kmpl which is quite impressive.

Comfort Suspension

The car is built upon the ladder-frame construction and Mahindra says it has done so because Indian road conditions are ruthless and the car will be in a better position to dish out abuses of our roads. That said, the Marazzo’s ride quality is quite impressive and the way it handles the tidy road conditions is beyond expectations.
The steering feels light at low speeds and easy to use while parking. The car maintains decent communication on road while on high speeds. However, if you are attacking corners with zest, you will feel a lot of body roll. Overall, the low speed ride is phenomenal and the suspension is capable of tackling the worst of roads with ease.

Engine Performance

Under the hood, Mahindra Marazzo houses a 1.5L 4-cylinder diesel engine which is the sole engine as of now. This is the same engine coming from the mFalcon family and also working in KUV100 in 3-cylinder configuration. The single turbo powertrain makes 123PS and 300Nm of max torque and that’s pretty decent for a car of this stature. And what’s more impressive is the manner in which the car delivers the power. The vehicle pulls away nicely from halt with linear power delivery and comprehensive torque spread. Turbo lag in the vehicle is well contained.
The car silently cruises in the moderate revs and this is where you realize how refined the engine is. And once the car crosses the 1500rpm line, it pulls fairly strong. However, if you are in a hurry, chances are there you would expose one of the weak points of this car and i.e. pitiable power-to-weight ratio. One can realize how much 123PS of power can pull a car that weighs 1.6 tonnes. Therefore, acceleration isn’t much impressive and the vehicle builds up acceleration gradually. In short, it lacks any sense of urgency and picks up speed in a relaxed manner. This also means that driver needs patient when it comes to overtaking, especially when the car is loaded and that too on a single lane road.
The MPV is paired to 6-speed manual gearshift which is light and doesn’t take much effort in slotting. However, that precise feeling of a Japanese gearbox is missing. And in case you are wondering that the gear lever dances just like many Mahindras, no it doesn’t. This is because the car features a cable-shift mechanism with aluminum shift forks and a dampener placed at the very base of the shift lever.

Braking Safety

Mahindra Marazzo comes equipped with all-disc brakes which are standard. The brake power is impressive and even under strenuous braking situation, the car is able to hold its line straight. Overall, while braking one will never feel nervous.
Further, the carmaker is offering dual airbags, ABS and EBD as standard fitment. But at least Mahindra should have given 6 airbags with the top-end variant, which is unfortunately not the case. Other safety aspects include ISOFIX child seats mount, rear parking sensors with camera, impact and speed sensing door lock, car theft alarm and rear defogger among others.
