Overview

The admiration for SUVs is increasing like never before and every other carmaker is making efforts to get a share of pie. Jeep also launched Compass SUV with the same objective of catering to the growing taste of the Indian carbuyers and give them a product which suite their style and need. The SUV carries the design cues from Grand Cherokee and its impression can be seen on the inside as well. The car is available in both the engine options to choose from and gets the automatic version for the buyers as well 4X4 mechanism for the off-roading enthusiasts. The company has recently introduced top level variant Limited Plus with additional goodies, while its upcoming Compass Trailhawk trim is suitable for the hard-core off-roader.
Checking the exteriors, Jeep Compass gets the tough appeal but with the premium feel. From the first look one can easily identify that its design is inspired by the bigger sibling Grand Cherokee. But this forms the part of the overall styling otherwise Compass carries the identity of its own. The front face gets attractive iconic 7-slat radiator grille, headlamps gets white elements and air dam is wide that adds to the muscular looks of the car. On the sides, Jeep gets the signature trapezoidal wheel arches and rides on the 17-inch alloy wheels. The thick black cladding all around the car makes it more appealing. At the back, the car features tail lamps that gets a prominent LED guide light and wraparound rear windshield with chrome line. In terms of dimensions, Jeep Compass measures 4395mm in length, 1818mm in width, 1640mm high and gets the wheelbase of 2636mm. The ground clearance stands at 178mm while the boot space is 408L. Jeep Compass is available in various colour pallets such as Vocal White, Brilliant Black, Magnesio Grey, Minimal Grey, Exotica Red and Hydro Blue.
Coming to the interiors, Jeep Compass do shares some of the elements with Grand Cherokee on the inside as well. The cabin feels quite spacious and its dual tone finish adds premium appeal to the car. The interior fit and finish and the quality of the material used are up to the mark. The seats are quite comfortable and are covered with premium upholstery. In terms of gadgetry, Jeep compass gets ‘uconnect’ infotainment system that has 7-inch touchscreen that connects with Bluetooth, USB, AUX-In and FM and AM. Other than these, the unit is also compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The feature list also include dual-zone climate control, electrically adjustable rear view mirror, 8-way adjustable driver’s seat, dual-pane panoramic sunroof, automatic rain sensing wiper, automatic headlamps, premium instrument panel and push start/stop button.
Jeep Compass in the country is offered in two engine options: 2.0L diesel and 1.4L petrol. The 2.0L turbocharged ‘Multijet ll’ diesel mill is capable of generating the power output of 173PS and yields the maximum torque of 350Nm. The diesel engine comes mated to 6-speed manual gearbox and offers the claimed mileage figures of 17.1kmpl while the 4X4 diesel delivers 16.3kmpl. On the other hand, the 1.4L turbocharged ‘Multiair’ petrol engine can churn the power output of 162PS and maximum torque of 250Nm. The petrol oil burner comes with 6-speed manual and 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. Its fuel efficiency figures stands at 14.1kmpl.
Being a premium SUV, the vehicle comes with a numerous safety aspects. The standard features list is quite a long one. Its contains safety aspects like dual front airbags, Anti-lock braking system, Electronic brake distribution, Traction control, Hill start assist, Electronic stability control, Panic brake assist, electronic brake prefill, electronic rollover mitigation. The 4X4 variant comes equipped with 6 airbags. Other safety aspects are rear parking sensors, auto dimming IRVMs, rear view camera, cornering fog lamps, rear wiper, child safety lock, power door lock, central locking and engine immobilizer.
Jeep Compass is offered in four variants including Sport, Longitude, Limited and Limited Plus. The price of this mid-sized SUV starts from Rs. 15.4 lakh and goes up to Rs. 22.9 lakh. The pricing for the base trim Sport for the petrol version is Rs. 15.4 lakh and for the diesel variant its Rs. 16.6 lakh. The mid-range model Longitude gets the price tag of Rs. 17.92 lakh while the Compass Limited is tagged at Rs. 19.97 lakh and Rs. 19.63 lakh for the petrol and diesel respectively. The top-spec variant Limited plus is offered at the price tag of Rs. 21.47 lakh for petrol and Rs. 21.13 lakh for diesel while the Compass Limited Plus 4X4 is tagged at Rs. 22.9 lakh, ex-showroom. Jeep Compass competes against heavyweight such as Hyundai Tucson, Mahindra XUV500 and Tata Hexa in the segment.

Interior

The interiors of the car are reminiscent to the elder sibling Grand Cherokee with similar upmarket feel. The top portion of the dashboard comes with black finishing while the lower half is finished in white. The dashboard features soft-touch plastics which does enhance the premium appeal. But increasing the premium feel, it seems the carmaker has gone overboard as the piano black surround on the 7-inch touchscreen unit doesn’t look good. The steering wheel gives a nice feel while the twin-pod instrument cluster with 3.5-inch MID screen in the middle gives relevant information of the vehicle. These include average fuel economy, instant fuel economy, distance to empty, low-fuel warning, current playing music, parking information, battery voltage level, days left for service, oil and coolant temperature and other important warning messages.
One of the main highlights in the cabin is the gear lever which looks like a ball of metal finished in silver. The gear stick feels nice to hold and remains cool as it gets cold air from the ac vents. The storage area seems to be limited with small hole behind the gear lever, 2 cup holders and a deep glovebox under the sliding armrest capable of storing 500ml bottle easily. The cup holders gets small LEDs beneath which is a nice touch while the glovebox in the dashboard is average, neither bigger nor tiny.
The seats of the car are partly leather and partly white hue which looks wonderful with the contrast red stitching. There is also black hued seat available in case you are afraid that the white one would get dirty and dull. Though the matte black plastic quality especially on the door panels could have been better but they are not bad either and in terms of quality, everything seems to be robust and built to last.
Coming to the comfort and space, this is the area where this car scores well. There is excellent amount of space for the front passengers and enough knee and legroom for the back benchers. There is adequate amount of headroom and people with 6 feet and less wouldn’t feel any problem. The seatback at the rear has been fixed at a comfortable angle while the additional width of the seat squab has resulted in ample under thigh support. Though it’s a 5-seater, accommodating third person could be a little problem due to the transmission tunnel and the seat squab contour. The rear seats can be split in 60:40 ratios providing additional space for the cargo.
Being a comeback in the Indian market, it was inevitable for the company to offer a plethora of features in the car. And the American automaker has done it pretty well. The list of equipment includes a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment provided by Uconnect compatible with both Android Auto and Apply CarPlay. The infotainment unit is also integrated with voice command and Bluetooth while the screen also provides guidelines and feeds from the reverse parking camera.
Besides audio and phone functions, the display screen also features secondary controls for the climate control system. The decibels are provided by 6 speakers encompassing every square meter of the acoustics. Then there is dual-zone automatic temperature control and rear ac vents, which further create comfortable environment on the go. The list of features further include 8-way power adjustable driver seat with 4-way lumbar support and memory function, start/stop switch, auto-dimming interior mirror, automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers and dual-pane panoramic sunroof.
The electric parking brake feature is a welcome move while another conspicuous omission includes the electric opening of the tail gate which should be there in a Rs. 20 lakh car. A separate USB port has been given for the rear passengers, a thoughtful addition. There are mounted steering controls which are a good but the blank switches on the right hand side are certainly an eyesore.

Exterior

The Jeep Compass is arguably the best looking SUV in its class as it attracts several eyeballs wherever it goes. At first glance, the car looks like a tuned down Grand Cherokee with the front grille, bonnet creases and the badge looks nearly similar to the elder sibling. The seven-slat family grille laden with chrome and the rectangular-shaped bi-xenon headlamps with LED lookalike strip makes up for a striking front fascia. The actual LED daytime running lights are placed above the fog lamps, so some people might get confused at the first sight. The chrome finished lip below the air dam adds to the bling.
Turn around a bit and you will see that the car carries a proper SUV stance. The squared wheel arches, rising window line with a sharp bend towards the end and the 17-inch alloy wheels, all makes up for a typical Jeep design. But what adds to the drama is the manner in which the body line crosses the door handles and the compass symbol on the lower half of the front door. The SUVish bulk is hidden, thanks to the thick black cladding encompassing the car.
The car looks striking and sedate from the rear. The LED taillights split in two parts will certainly remind you of the elder sibling Grand Cherokee. The company also says that the LED tail lamps take inspiration from Ironman. The dual-toned roof carries a chrome outline that nicely flows down to the rear windshield. The number plate area is slightly sunken which is a nice touch, while the roof rails and the rear spoiler do not add much too the overall profile. Look all around the car and the handsome and beefy looks make it an unmistakably Jeep.

Mileage Running Cost

SUVs aren’t known for excellent fuel efficiency, especially the petrol ones. Same is the case with Jeep Compass. The petrol automatic version returns around 8kmpl in cities and 12.5kmpl on highways. This is acceptable figure when we compared it to Tucson. The diesel Compass with AWD is slightly efficient with the city and highway mileage being around 11kmpl and 14kmpl respectively.

Comfort Suspension

Given its capabilities off the tarmac, it is really unbelievable how this car handles the roads. The car gets all-independent suspension with frequency selective dampers technology, which is normally found in expensive cars. The system adjusts the damping, sensing the driving style and the road conditions in order to provide the best of both ride and handling.
The ride quality of this car is nothing less than impressive, especially on the bad roads as the vehicle takes up potholes, stones and gravels without unsettling the passengers inside. This performance along with weighted steering wheel and the feedback it offers shows that the car is an excellent road handler. Even if the car is pushed hard, it remains planted.
At low speeds, the stiff ride can get a little bouncy but as the speed builds up, the cabin settles down in a comfort zone. The company says it has done a lot to ensure the cabin remain quiet and muffles the engine noise. Thanks to the triple sealing on the doors and glass at the windows and windshields as well as the sound deadening in the floor pan that makes things inside the cabin quiet.

Engine Performance

The Jeep Compass is available with both petrol and diesel engine options. The diesel one is the Fiat’s 2.0L Multijet II new generation engine which is brand new for this car in the Indian market. The engine produces 173PS and 350Nm of max torque. Power delivery is linear with the mid-range is strong enough to get past the crowded traffic. However, since the torque is available from around 1800 rpm, there might be some noticeable lag. Though the engine is overall silent, it clatters at standby and can get a bit noisy on the go, especially when you push it hard after 3500 rpm.
Unfortunately, this engine is not available with automatic transmission and sports only a 6-speed manual gearbox. The gearbox is slick and the gear changes give an accurate feel which make up and down shifting quite enthusiastic. Coming to the petrol engine, 1.4L Multiair turbo-petrol engine is again from Fiat and should not be confused with the one working under Abarth Punto. The motor pumps out 163PS and 250Nm of max torque. The power and torque figures are lower than the diesel counterpart but that doesn’t make it boring.
Drive it with the light foot and you wouldn’t grumble about, but the powertrain is not as punchy as the diesel one. The engine gathers speeds in a relaxed manner while the turbo comes in around 2000 rpm. Acceleration is quick but not exciting. As far as refinement is concerned, it isn’t as smooth and silent as other turbo petrol engines and at times can get noisy, especially at the higher rev band. On open stretches, the petrol Compass gives a homelike feeling as the engine is always eager for fast cruise. However, in cities with automatic transmission, it can get confused. Normally, people expect butter smooth performance from automatic transmissions, especially in this price range. But to be honest, the gearbox doesn’t give that smooth feeling as we get in DSG gearbox in Volkswagen cars.
It doesn’t get paddle shifters either. So, if you are planning to do a quick overtake, plan your intentions in advance. But it delivers what most of us want i.e. convenience. Driving it in a careful and cautious manner will cover up majority of the shortcomings. In terms of off-roading, the Compass being a Jeep delivers what it promises. The SUV can take the river crossings, muddy roads, steep inclines and tight turns quite well. The terrain management system offers four different modes including Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud, each comes with unique AWD calibrations and other electronic settings. All in all, the Jeep is a finest example of American automaker’s expertise in producing some of the most capable SUVs.

Braking Safety

The Compass SUV comes loaded with all-disc brakes. And if we were to define the performance in one word, it would be ‘fabulous’. The brakes are progressive and the overall stopping power instils confidence. Even in emergency braking situations, the car comes to halt without any drama.
The list of safety features impresses the most. The SUV is loaded with standard features including dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, traction control, Hill start assist, Panic brake assist, electronic rollover mitigation and electronic brake prefill. Other safety measures include rear parking camera, rear parking sensors, auto-dimming IRVM and cornering fog lamps.
