The Korean auto giant first introduced the Xcent back in the year 2014. The car marks as Hyundai’s first foray in the budget sub-four meter compact sedan market in the subcontinent. The compact sedan is based on Hyundai’s Grand i10 platform and steady seller for the Korean auto giant. After giving tough competition to its rivals for 3 long years, the vehicle was in a dire need of update and company finally introduced the facelift in 2017. The vehicle has been transformed in many ways, its outer design and inner styling have been worked upon. The 2017 model gets the entirely new designing and some added goodies along with updated engines.
The outer design of the vehicle looks very much the same as its predecessor. The front receives large hexagonal radiator grille flanked by the swept back headlamps providing the car with all new appearance. The inverted L shaped Daylight running lights placed around the fog lamps looks good. On the side, the car features swanky 15-inch alloy wheels while the rear part gets new wraparound split tail lamps that gel nicely with the dual-toned bumper. Shark fin antenna is placed atop the rear windshield. In brief, the compact sedan has enough attributes in its pocket to show off. Its vibrant colour options include Wine Red, Star Dust, Sleek Silver, Polar White and Marine Blue.
Inner profile gets the dual tone interior that enhances the ambiance. It gives the feel of the plush vehicle at such a low price tag. The fit and finish, as well as the quality of the material, are nearly on par with its German counterparts. Everything inside is placed at the perfect position where it has to be. The feature list includes 7-inch infotainment unit that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Automatic Climate Control, Keyless entry, Height adjustable driver’s seat, rear parking sensors and rear parking camera among others.
In terms of specifications, the car gets the 1.2L Kappa petrol mill that can generate the power output of 83PS and maximum torque of 114Nm. Another one is the 1.2L U2 CRDi diesel oil burner that can produce 75PS and belts out the peak torque of 190Nm. The petrol engine comes mated to five-speed manual as well as four-speed automatic transmissions. While its diesel mill comes with only five-speed manual gearbox. As far as safety goes, Hyundai Xcent gets the long feature list such as 6 airbags, ABS and other aspects such as engine mobilizer, central locking, turn indicators on ORVMs, child safety lock and more.
Hyundai Xcent is offered in six different variants namely E, E+, S, S (AT), SX and SX (O). Talking about the pricing details, Hyundai Xcent’s base trim has been tagged at Rs. 5.54 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 6.42 lakh for the diesel trim. Its top ranging model gets the price tag of Rs. 7.65 lakh for petrol and goes up to Rs. 8.58 lakh for the diesel one. The top-selling variant 1.2 VTVT S trim is tagged at Rs. 6.5 lakh.
The updated Xcent has really upped the game against Maruti Dzire, Honda Amaze, Volkswagen Vento and Tata Tigo in the space, where it has been finding hard to make its place for a couple of years.

Step in and the biggest change you will see is in the form of much needed new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment. The unit is also compatible with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay as well as MirrorLink. The user interface is super slick while pairing your smartphones is also easy. The big touchscreen also serves the purpose of displaying visuals for the rear parking camera.
As far as cabin goes, it will still remind you the interiors of Grand i10, however, the fit and finish of the dual-toned dashboard, steering wheel, and the controls, all indicate a high-level sophistication applied inside. The air conditioner in the car is still outstanding and the rear half of the car can be quickly cooled with the help of rear AC vents.
The back seat comfort remains good with the ample amount of legroom, however, the seat reclining is not as comfortable as it should be. Other feel-good features that remain intact in the car include cooled glovebox, keyless entry, electrically foldable ORVMs, rear center armrest and smart key with engine start/stop button.

This time around, Hyundai has tried to apply maximum effort to implement the design scheme from the high-end models in its portfolio such as Elantra. This has resulted in new ‘cascading styled’ grille that looks similar to the elder sibling. This also makes the Xcent looks different from the Grand i10 for which it has been taunted for many years. But for many, the older set-up with slender grille joining the headlamps would have been more appropriate. Another noticeable change at the front is the revamped headlamps and the revised bumper which now houses daytime running LEDs, positioned above the fog lamps.
There aren’t many changes at the side profile except the wheels are larger than before and a new set of 15-inch diamond cut alloy wheels. However, it’s the rear that has gone through a huge makeover. The smaller tail-lights of the previous model have now been replaced by wrap-around units, adding nice width to the car. The taillights setup look like a typical Audi. Then there is matte-black strip running across the rear bumper that further adds to the muscularity.
Other changes include shark fin antenna at the top and the 1.2D badging on the front right fender. Overall, the changes done by the carmaker at the outside will compel you to make a nod of appreciation.

Mileage Running Cost

Hyundai claims that the new Xcent returns improved mileage figures as the engines have been improved. Where the diesel powered variant delivers ARAI certified mileage of 25.4kmpl, the petrol version, on the other hand, reads 20.14kmpl. The petrol automatic is though, a little low, returning 17.36kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

The car has also been improved in terms of ride quality and bumps absorption. The suspension set-up is slightly nimbler and the bad patches on the surface are galloped easily. The steering is now lighter to use and more accurate. However, once you go past the 120kmph, one can feel vertical nodding. But that doesn’t make the car feel nervous.

Engine Performance

It’s the thing under the hood that makes the real difference in terms of driving pleasure. The company has tweaked the engine line-up for maximum performance. The 1.2L U2 CRDi diesel engine is now capable of making 75PS, (3PS more) and 190Nm (10Nm extra) of torque. The transmission duties are handled by 5-speed manual gearbox. The automatic diesel version is still much demanded.
The petrol engine is the 1.1L Kappa Dual VTVT motor which produces 83PS and 114Nm of max torque. The petrol version can be availed in either 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. The noise and vibration levels in the petrol driven Xcent has been refined which makes it behave well on roads.
The diesel version with high power and torque capacity now gives improved driving experience. The best way to drive the car is to choose the moderate sweet spot and you can feel the strong and effortless driving on the go.

Braking Safety

Braking has never been a problem in Hyundai cars and Xcent is no exception. The responsibility of braking lies on the disc brakes at the front and drum at the rear. The braking system does its job quite judiciously with strong bite force. Looking at the growing safety concerns as well as the competition among the peers, the carmaker has decided to give dual airbags as standard fitment in the car.
However, it would have been better to have included ABS as a part of standard safety feature to keep pace with the competition. Nevertheless, the ABS, rear parking sensors, engine immobilizer, central locking, keyless entry and front fog lamps, all can be availed in higher models.
