Overview

Hyundai Verna is one of the world’s most lovable sedans and with the all-new next generation model, it’s going to touch new heights. Verna has been an important player for the Korean auto giant as far as the Indian market is concerned. The new Verna is incredibly refined with expressive designing and impressive dynamics. It is the perfect balance of irresistible power, sleek profile and sporty grace.
Hyundai Verna is based on the Fluidic sculpture 2.0 philosophy and underpinned by the new K2 platform. The front features a cascading radiator grille, gracefully placed sweptback projector headlamps along with LED DRLs. The bumper design is quite sporty with neat chrome detailing around the fog lamps. The side profile boasts of a sloping coupe-like roofline, revised door handles, and chrome detailing on window sills. The car gets new multiple spoke 16-inch alloy wheels and updated C-pillar design. The rear profile shares design cues from Elantra with the subtle spoiler and split LED taillights. The new Hyundai Verna is available in 7 vibrant colours such as Sleek Silver, Polar White, Flame Orange, Siena Brown, Thunder Black, Fiery Red, and Stardust.
Coming to its interiors, Hyundai Verna gets more premium and feature-loaded as compared to its outgoing model. The layout of the cabin space gets a big thump up due to increased wheelbase, so this translates to more shoulder, leg, and headroom. Steering wheel gets silver accents and the new 7-inch touchscreen unit gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Other oodles of comfort factors include automatic climate control, push start/stop button, cruise control, rear AC vents, rear parking camera, keyless entry, and height adjustable driver seat.
As far as the powertrain is concerned, next-gen Hyundai Verna carries the same engines. The 1.6L VTVT petrol mill can generate the power output of 123PS and yields the peak torque of 151Nm. The diesel variant gets 1.6L VGT U2 CRDi oil burner that churns the power output of 128PS and peak torque of 260Nm. Both the mills can be availed in either 6-speed manual gearbox or 6-speed automatic transmission.
In the safety zone, Hyundai Verna gets features like ABS with EBD and dual airbags standard across the range. Other features in top spec trims include rain sensing wiper, power door lock, central locking, turn indicators on ORVMs and side airbags.
The C-segment sedan is available in four different variants such as E, EX, SX and SX (O). Checking on the pricing details its base trim E is available at the price tag of Rs. 7.90 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 9.60 lakh for the diesel model. Its top variant SX (O) is priced at Rs. 12.66 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 12.86 lakh for the diesel. The top-selling VTVT 1.6 SX is tagged at Rs. 9.81 lakh.
The new Hyundai Verna is a certainly a lot sophisticated and evolved. And this makes it a more worthy competitor against the likes of Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Volkswagen Vento in the segment.

Interior

The looks of the dual-tone beige and black cabin is definitely a Hyundai. The carmaker has worked upon by adding silver highlights to lend some contrast. Those behind the wheels would found the ambiance and the user-interface a nice place to be in. And the overall fit and finish inside have been drastically improved. The center console is nicely angled while the low sills on the dashboard offer a good view of the outside. The infotainment system is positioned high while the buttons and controls are also sensibly placed.
The front seats are well finished and the cushioning is also on a softer side. The car really shines when it comes to rear seat improvement with the company giving extra cushioning and better legroom as compared to older Verna. However, anyone taller than average will find it difficult to manage at the back. Regardless of where you are seated, the sedan offers excellent space for storing smaller items. Each door pocket can hold 1L bottle, there are cup holders close to the gear lever while the center armrest has a storage bay. Along with larger glovebox, the passengers this time around, will get the facility of USB charging at both front and rear.
The Korean automaker has taken this car to its ultimate comfort level this time. The new Hyundai Verna gets first in class front ventilated seats and new features including rear curtain, smart electric sunroof, and rear ac vents. The car gets 7-inch touchscreen infotainment which is considered the best in its class. The system is not only powered by Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Mirror Link, but also can be controlled via voice commands. Other features in the sedan include cruise control, leather upholstery, push-engine start/stop button, handsfree smart trunk opening and luggage lamp among the plethora of comfort factors.

Exterior

On the design front, it’s possible for the passersby to mistake new Verna for Elantra, thanks to silhouette and the design that makes it resemble the sibling. So, one can understand the level of details the car has been given. And just like the Elantra, the new Verna conforms to the company’s new Fluidic Design 2.0 design language. The center of attraction at the front is definitely the cascading style grille that adds nice width to the car. The curved headlamps with projector lights and the chrome surround on the fog lamps add distinct character to the vehicle.
The car retains the coupe-like stance and with bigger dimension (longer by 65mm and wheelbase increased by 30mm) it now looks all more special. The wheels are packed nicely with the support of 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels. The electrically operated sunroof lends an upmarket touch to the car. The LED taillamps look good particularly when you took the car at night. The carmaker has gone minimalistic when it comes to using chrome at the rear and that works in favour of the car.

Mileage Running Cost

The engines in the new Verna have been reasonably tweaked that translates into improved fuel efficiency. The diesel powered Verna with manual transmission is able to return ARAI certified 24.75kmpl while the automatic version delivers 21kmpl. In a similar vein, the petrol version with manual transmission gives 19kmpl, the automatic version is a bit low sipping 1L of fuel for returning 17.7kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

The suspension systems in Hyundai cars have matured with the passage of time and Verna is no exception. Most of the time, the suspension is quiet and the majority of road irregularities and potholes won’t be bothering. Even the backbenchers feel no jarring from the bumps and can experience a comfortable ride. The high-speed stability of the car has also been improved by a handsome margin.

Engine Performance

Though the sedan carries forward the same engine line-up, they have been judiciously tweaked to give improved power and torque outputs. The car is available in both petrol and diesel engine option. The petrol engine is the 1.6L Gamma Dual VTVT engine that pumps out 123PS and 151Nm of max torque. The carmaker has discontinued the earlier 1.4L engine.
In the diesel department, you get the 1.6L U2 CRDi motor that is able to produce 128PS and 260Nm of peak torque. And interestingly, both the engines are now available in the choice of either 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
The petrol powered variant, especially the automatic is well-mannered when you are strolling around the town. It’s not only the quickest than the earlier version, but also the quickest among its peers. The revised powered delivery nature of the engine and the addition of 6-speed manual replacing the old 5-speed, has definitely done in its favour. The power delivery of the diesel one is also linear and refinement level is still likable.

Braking Safety

While the braking performance of the new Verna is adequate for a regular driving experience, the energetic drivers will find it missing due to lack of rear disc brake. However, the jerkiness of the brakes in the previous version has now been sorted out.
In terms of equipment, the sedan is loaded with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, central locking and ISOFIX mounts as standard. Further, choosing the top spec model will get you 6 airbags, keyless entry, headlamp escort function, and speed sensing auto-door lock.

Owning a Hyundai Verna top end diesel manual has never made me feel bad about my decision. It’s a good car and gives you a certain sporty yet grown up feel without claiming to be one. The car has projector headlamps with daytime running LEDs and projector fog lamps that bracket the larger front grille. Nothing can be as good Read More
