Santro's kerb wight is 868 kg, while seating capacity is 5 persons. Though for sure a tall-boy in this segment. The clear lens headlamps give the front end a fresh look while the grille wears a ‘smile’ design with vertical slots. The usage of black color up front in the lower part of bumper does help break the conventional design. Santro also excels in the interiors department. The first feel that you get in the driver’s seat is that of usage of high quality plastics for this kind of price segment.

The design of the console is still fresh and the new two tone color scheme seems to work well here, giving the Santro an up-market look and feel. Seat comfortable is good though up front, a tall driver will soon find fatigue settling in. The rear seats again have the same issue – that of space. The Santro is sold in three different trim levels and the top end one gets features like rear parcel tray, front power windows, audio system etc. The engine of the car delvers maximum power of 63@5,500 (PS@rpm) and maximum torque of 9.8@4,000 (kgm@rpm). Prices start at 2.9 lakhs to 4.7 lakhs ex-hsowroom Delhi. It still has a few shortcomings like cabin space or the not-so-efficient engine but at the same time, the plus points easily out-do the negatives and this is what still keep the Santro chugging along in great numbers each month. Hyundai Santro Xing Picture

Like most Hyundai offerings, the Santro also excels in the interiors department. The first feel that you get in the driver’s seat is that of usage of high quality plastics for this kind of price segment. The design of the console is still fresh and the new two tone color scheme seems to work well here, giving the Santro an up-market look and feel. The seats are also finished in two-tone (beige and brown) and this adds a pinch of elegance and style. Up front, the steering looks like that of a budget car while the trip-pod speedometer console does catch your eyes. Hyundai has cleverly used metallic finish for various parts to liven up the cabin – for example the central console, around the air-con vents etc.

Seat comfortable is good though up front, a tall driver will soon find fatigue settling in. The rear seats again have the same issue – that of space. The Santro is sold in three different trim levels and the top end one gets features like rear parcel tray, front power windows, audio system etc. On the whole though the Santro’s interiors excels in quality and design, the space is at a premium and is a deterrent for a family looking at a car for five people.

What we like

Good quality cabin and well built cabin is practical.

What we don't like

The interior lacks space and now modern times have caught on.

Keyless Entry

Xing does have an option of central locking in the car.

Hyundai Santro Xing Pictures

The Santro competes in the entry level hatchback market in India. At 3565mm in length, 1525mm in width and 1590mm in height, it is by no means a big car – though for sure a tall-boy in this segment. The clear lens headlamps give the front end a fresh look while the grille wears a ‘smile’ design with vertical slots. The usage of black color up front in the lower part of bumper does help break the conventional design. The bonnet gets some muscle with the raised lines while seen from the side, the Santro does look a little bland.

That said, the rear of the Santro still looks good with the small spoiler, clear tail-lamps and yet again usage of black above the number plate and on the bonnet visible. All the versions of the Santro come shod with 155mm tryes on 13-inch steel wheels and the model is sold in three trim levels and six different color options. On the whole, while the Santro might not be among the best looking small cars in India, it doesn’t look dated, bland or boring either!

What we like

Still looks decent and pleasant.

What we don't like

But design starting to age.

Engine

When Hyundai launched the Santro more than a decade back, it came with an engine that was way ahead of its time as well as the competition. Over the years, the same engine has seen many changes and today, the Santro sports a 1086cc engine that belts out 63PS of power and close to 100Nm of torque. The engine in itself is pretty smooth as well as peppy in nature. Infact, combined with the short ratios, the Santro is a delight to drive in city traffic with the only drawback being the relatively lower ARAI rated fuel economy as compared to some of the rivals in the same price band.

According to Hyundai, the engine makes use of ‘rotary head intelligent valve actuator’, ‘differentially programmed intelligent injection’ and ‘real time intelligent ignition’ for make sure it operates in the best possible manner. For the user, this is an utterly reliable and powerful unit! The Santro comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox which works brilliantly. The shift quality is very nice and it gives you no reason to crib or complain. Hyundai also offers the Santro with a factory fitted LPG option.

What we like

Smooth engine and quite peppy.

What we don't like

But lacks punch in highways.

Engine & Performance Details

Acceleration

Xing accelerates from 0-100 in about 15.62 seconds. It does not have a burst of acceleration but manages to stay in the competition.

Top Speed

Xing has a top speed of about 136kmph whereas the speedo displayed 150kmph.

In Gear Acceleration

The Santro Xing can reach 40-60 in just 4.08 seconds in the third gear and 80-100 in 5.20 seconds as well.

Gearbox

Santro Xing has 5 Speed Manual gearbox which is quite easy to handle.

Power

The 1086 cc in-line 4 cylinders engine generates a power of 63 Bhp of power at 5500 rpm

Torque

Santro Xing has 89mm of torque at 3000rpm.

NVH Levels

Santro Xing has a very refined engine and the vibration and noise level is not that much in the car.

More

Mileage

The Santro sports a 1086cc engine that belts out 63PS of power and close to 100Nm of torque. Expect about 15 kmpl overall which is a decent figure but overshadowed by newer rivals inclduing the Eon. The LPG variant lowers your bills a lot more.

What we like

LPG variant makes for frugal running costs.

What we don't like

Efficiency lower than newer rivals.

Mileage Details

City Fuel Economy

Santro Xing gives about 18.7kmpl in the city.

Highway Fuel Economy

Santro Xing gives about 23.7kmpl.

Arai Rated Economy

Arai rated 17.92 kmpl

Tank Range

Hyundai Santro Xing has about 655km of tank range.

Safety

The saving grace is the overall driving ease – the power steering is pretty light and the way the car makes its way through traffic is something that still puts a smile on your face! This is also the reason why the Santro is still a preferred car among the fair sex when it comes investing into a small hatchback! Its got basic safety features like central locking, immobilizer.

What we like

Handles well for its size.

What we don't like

Lacks safety features.

Handling Braking & Safety Details

Handling

Santro handles pretty well although it has a small set of wheels the gearbox is very smooth but the car struggles a bit at higher speeds.

Braking Performance

Santro Xing has ventilated discs in the front and drum brakes at the rear the breaks are quite descent and has good braking power. Xing manages to stop from 100-0 in about 4.29seconds.

Safety Features

Safety is an integral part of the Santro’s total car engineering design. The following are the safety features available in the Santro Xing Child-safety Rear Door Locks Dual Side Impact Beams Seat Belts - Front and Rear Energy Absorbing Steering Column/Collapsible Day and Night Inside Rear View Mirror Rear Parcel Tray Central Locking Self Locking Door Immobilizer

Abs

There is no option for ABS in the Santro Xing.

Traction Control

There is no option for Traction control in the car.

More

Comfort

If you remember the first television commercial when the Santro came out in the Indian market, you will remember how the car was being driven over an off-road stage – yes, back then, the Santro ride quality felt nothing short of a dream but sadly today, other cars have managed to catch up and even exceed its comfort. In typical usage, you don’t find a reason to complain but as the roads become bad, the ride becomes choppy. The back seat users are the worst as they get throw around quite a lot and this combined with less knee room makes the matters worse.

What we like

Easy to drive in traffic.

What we don't like

Ride quality is choppy and not comfortable.

Comfort & Suspension Details

Comfort

The following thing is what you get in the Santro Xing and these all adds to the comfort level of the Xing AC with heater Odometer Low fuel warning lamp Power windows front Remote fuel lid opener Remote tailgate release Internally adjustable ORVM's

Front Suspension

The suspension at the front is McPherson struts with stabiliser bar in the Santro Xing and absorbs pot holes quite efficiently giving the passenger a smooth ride.

By RATAN SINGH Posted on 28 Jun 08, 11:18 PM

Pros GOOD LOOK GOOD PICKUP

Cons BAD DEALERS/SERVICE PROVIDERS/HOPELESS SEVICE/POOR MILAGE

Hyundai has the best technology of mid sized cars these days...But it is very bad on their part to give mismanaged and poor service to the customers..I got my car last year in june (2007)...car is very good, pickup is excellent...but SERVICE PROVIDERS R NOT AT ALL satisfactory...I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'ve got the car serviced 3 times and not even a single time the good results r achieved...My car\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s milage is also not satisfactory...Service providers r never interested to give good results and the feedback takn by us r not considered well...It is surely the MISMANAGEMENT OF COMPANY hyundai..The position of the car is surely going to decrease if the company doesnot provide good dealers and ensure good services to the costumers...It is very sad to see the combination of a good technology and bad services...Its high time for company management to save the reputation....
