Review of Hyundai Grand i10

The i10 has been one of the best selling models for Hyundai in the Indian car market but it sells in a segment that witnesses stiff competition from other manufacturers. This is a reason why the i10 sales have taken a hit in the past 2 years. In order to keep the brand alive and kicking, a major revamp was needed and cleverly, Hyundai won't be replacing the i10 any time soon. Instead, they named the new model "Grand i10" and have decided to sell it alongside the current i10.

As the name suggests, this new model is a grander version of the i10 in all parameters. It looks better, has grown up in size, offers more room on the inside and ofcourse adds a new engine in the line-up. This is the new 1.1-litre 3 cylinder diesel motor that promises to deliver best in class fuel economy. It might not offer class leading performance but surely shines when it comes to city usage. Ofcourse the 1.2 petrol motor stays and Hyundai has loaded the Grand i10 with a host of features to give the consumer a grander feel. The Grand i10 will challenge offerings like the Ford Figo on one end and the Maruti Swift on the other. It does come with its own plus points and with Hyundai's strong re-sale value and quality to back it up, the Grand will be a success in the Indian market!

Interior

The Grand i10 is a longer car as compared to the regular i10 hatchback and this also means space on the inside is generous. Infact, it beats the Maruti Swift hands down when it comes to passenger space for 5 adults. Likewise, at 256 litres, boot space is also very good.

The Grand i10, like other Hyundai models, comes with high quality interiors. The dual tone color scheme looks nice and the high seating posture is a boon for short drivers, the fair sex and the elderly.

The rear windows are large which adds to the airy feel on the inside. Further rear air-con vents are a segment first and needless to say, will help the rear passengers during Indian summers. Hyundai is also giving a lot of feaures in the Grand i10 and the top end Asta version comes loaded with keyless entry and Smart Start-stop, electrically foldable rear view mirrors, Bluetooth connectivity, integrated audio system with 1 GB of internal memory etc.
The base version, the Era, is also decently loaded with power steering, air-con, front power windows etc.

The Grand i10's suspension features an independent MacPherson strut layout at the front, and a torsion beam axle setup for rear wheels. Being a family hatchback, the suspension setup of the Hyundai Grand i10 focuses on ride comfort, and suffice to say, it has worked well. The Grand i10 is a great improvement over its predecessor in terms of ride quality. It soaks up bump in its stride without feeling bumpy or fragile. Ride quality is good even at high-speeds, and it goes without saying that it offers a pliant ride with a sure-footed feel at these speeds.

On the flip side, the soft (comfortable) suspension setup means it does roll fair-bit during hard cornerning.

Comfortable and pliant ride quality at low or high speeds

  • What we dislike

Pronounced body-roll due to soft-suspension setup

Engine Performance

Option of both petrol and diesel motors. Diesel 1.1 litre motor is peppy and fuel efficient. Petrol motor is refined.
