Overview

Honda first introduced Jazz back in the year 2009 and since then, the premium hatch segment has seen a lot of ups and downs. The introduction of Jazz in the petrol version only proved to be a great setback for the carmaker and it was discontinued in 2013. The Japanese automaker decided to give it another shot and the all-new Jazz made a comeback in India in 2015 with a refreshed design, more practical interiors, new engines and transmission options.
Honda’s new Jazz is based on the fresh ‘EXCITING H DESIGN’ philosophy lending it a young and sporty look. It’s always known for its jazzy look and practical interiors and the new version echoes the same. Honda Jazz now comes with both petrol as well as diesel engine options, the petrol mill is the same as working in Brio while the diesel engine is the one that powers City, Amaze and Mobilio.
Honda Jazz now looks sleeker and sportier than the older model. While the previous Jazz featured a rounded off and simplistic design, the current model is more aesthetic. The central grille is blackened out and flanked by sleek wraparound headlamps that are placed above the bumpers with the sharp radiator grille. Taking a glance at the side view, the shoulder line looks prominent and the car rides on the diamond cut 15-inch alloy wheels that complete its sporty aesthetic. The car goes in line with company’s Man Maximum and Machine Minimum philosophy. The rear profile also looks fresh with new tail lamps and revised bumpers. Honda Jazz is offered in 6 vibrant colours such as White Orchid Pearl, Sunset Orange, Modern Steel Metallic, Golden Brown Metallic, Carnelian Red Pearl and Alabaster Silver Metallic.
The cabin of the Honda Jazz is as spacious as of the City. The interiors have ample amount of space for its passengers, the cabin is quite flexible and the rear row is folded for a relatively flat loading bay. The car offers an exceptional 354L of boot space and that can be increased to 881L. The vehicle gets features like 6.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, climate control system, and tilt adjustable steering wheel. Other features are rear parking sensors, height adjustable driver’s seat and electrically adjustable rear view mirror.
Under the hood, Honda Jazz can be availed in the petrol and diesel engine options. The car gets 1.2 L petrol mill that can generate the power output of 90PS and peak torque of 110Nm. The petrol engine comes mated to 5-speed manual gearbox or a CVT with paddle shifters. Another option is the 1.5L diesel engine that can churn the power output of 100PS and belts out the maximum torque of 200Nm. The diesel comes with six-speed manual transmission only.
Honda always designs its vehicles keeping maximum safety in mind and Jazz is no exception. The car is available with features such as standard dual SRS airbags while other features include engine immobilizer, anti-theft system, ABS with EBD, child safety lock, rear wiper, central locking, turn indicators on ORVMs and headlamp beam adjuster.
Honda Jazz is available in five different variant namely E, S, SV, V and VX. The base trim E is priced at Rs. 5.99 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 7.36 lakh for the diesel trim. The S variant is available at the price tag of Rs. 6.63 lakh and Rs. 8.4 lakh for the petrol and diesel trims respectively. Its top-spec model VX petrol is tagged at Rs. 7.9 lakh and Rs. 9.32 lakh for the diesel variants. The top-selling trim 1.2 V is available at the price tag of Rs. 7.41 lakh, all priced ex-showroom, New Delhi.
Even if it’s not the bestselling car out there, it’s undoubtedly one of the most practical and spacious cars in Honda’s portfolio. All this makes it capable to withstand the heat from rivals such as Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Volkswagen Polo, Fiat Punto EVO and in the segment.

Interior

A person who has driven the Honda City will find familiar environment in the cabin. However, there are a few detailing that set this car apart from the sibling. The instrument cluster is different with easy-to-read dials and shows real time fuel economy. The cabin is flexible and the height adjustable driver and magic seats feature are available on the top end models. The magic of these magic seats is that they flip and fold individually and can go completely flat to allow massive luggage space. The boot space stands at 354L, the biggest in the segment and if the second row is folded flat, then the space increases to enormous 881L.
It’s not only the space that is the plus point in the car, the practicality also goes to a whole new level. Ingress and egress, especially for the elderly is extremely convenient while the front shoulder room and rear knee room has been increased to provide maximum comfort. Coming to the seats, they are wide and comfortable at both front and the rear. The top spec models get black upholstery that look quite youthful while the seats in the lower variants are upholstered in beige.
There are changes to the cubby holes and the cupholder. There are two cupholders ahead of the gear lever and a big storage area that complement long journeys of the passengers. Talking about the equipment level, the car gets an all-new 6-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes integrated with satellite navigation. It can also be paired to smartphone for navigation as well for handsfree telephony. Other comfy features in the car include feather touch climate control, auto up/down driver’s windows, retractable ORVMs, paddle shifters (CVT variant), steering mounted audio controls, central console USB and power ports and rear parking camera with three angles.
However, there are some misses one will find in a car of this segment and these include engine start/stop button and rear AC vents. Overall, the interiors are definitely a notch above the earlier version.

Exterior

The all-new Jazz without an iota of doubt, is sportier than before. The vehicle is covered with needed cuts and creases, all at the right place, lending the car an aggressive look. As the vehicle is heavily inspired by City, this is one of the reasons why it has been priced higher. The front looks wider and emphasized by large and angular headlights making their way into the glossy-black plastic grille which also incorporates the logo. There is a thin chrome strip beneath which is also the part of the multi-element grille. This not only adds to the aura but also keep things understated.
Honda Jazz is an aspirational vehicle and this is evident from the creases along the waistline leading towards the taillights. This aggressive belt line helps it to shed MPV profile. The 15-inch alloys further highlights its sporty stance. The spoiler at the rear end is quite prominent and a lot of detailing goes around the tail lamps. The tail light cluster seems to be inspired from Volvo and now feature LED bulbs which looks quite pleasing to the eyes at night. The stop lamps with chrome strip aptly complete the rear styling.

Mileage Running Cost

The fuel efficiency in the new Honda Jazz is impressive and will definitely keep its owner happy. And this ecstasy comes from the diesel powered Jazz which returns ARAI certified mileage of 27.3kmpl. The petrol one though is less frugal delivering 18.7kmpl in the manual and 19kmpl in the automatic variant.

Comfort Suspension

The suspension system in the new Jazz is a massive improvement over the previous version. The agility is on par with the competition while the ride quality is excellent at slow and medium speeds. Even the high speed stability is appreciable.
Gliding over the potholes and speed breakers is convenient than before. It seems Honda’s objective while working on the new Jazz was clear i.e. to improve the comfort levels. And the carmaker has achieved it successfully.

Engine Performance

The new Jazz is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The 1.2L 4-cylinder SOHC-i-VTEC petrol engine gives power output of 90PS and 110Nm of max torque. The diesel motor is the one most of us are familiar with. Yes, this is the same DOHC i-DTEC 4-cylinder unit which powers Amaze, City and Mobilio, developing 100PS and 200Nm of peak torque. Though it’s notorious for being noisy but very efficient and marginally quieter than what is working under City.
The performance of diesel engine is also pretty similar to what we experience in City and Amaze. The gearshift that comes from the 6-speed manual transmission is positive and the clutch is also easy to operate. The petrol engine comes in two gearbox choices, 5-speed manual or 7-speed CVT automatic. The transmission from the CVT is utter smooth and helps the engine for making up a great city commuter. The driving convenience is unmatched with the amazing throttle response in city traffic.

Braking Safety

With standard disc at front and drum at rear, the brakes perform as you would expect in a Honda car. The vehicle comes to halt in a straight line without any drama. The car comes with ACE (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure for added safety. The dual front airbags comes as standard, while ABS with EBD can be availed in only diesel variants.
Other safety aspects in the car include rear parking camera, engine immobilizer, keyless entry, central locking, driver seatbelt reminder, and front fog lamps.
