Overview

Honda Accord has been introduced in its ninth generation globally and it is the flagship offering from the Japanese car manufacturer. Honda Accord was first launched in India back in the year 2001 and was withdrawn from the product line up in 2013. Accord has now made its come back in the subcontinent after a brief sabbatical. Now the 2016 version is a completely built-up unit and gets the new hybrid technology. The car witnesses a number of cosmetic changes compared to the previous version. It gets the contemporary style and design that makes the cabin premium, while the equipment inside notch up the credibility. Honda Accord tenth-generation model has also been revealed recently, the sedan has been provided with new features and design to match the competition.
On the outside, Honda Accord Hybrid being all new is not very different from the older version. The face gets the single thick chrome radiator grille and the front bumper comes with gloss black element in the centre that looks sporty. The chrome grille meets with the long swooping LED headlamps and LED fog lamps while the large air intakes on the lower bumper add more value to the face. On the side, multi-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels enhance the appearance. The rear part gets LED tail lamps and shark fin antenna is placed on the roof. Honda Accord is available in four colours such as Modern Steel Metallic, Orchid White Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl and Lunar Silver Metallic.
The dual beige and black interior scheme enhances the looks inside. The cabin is quite spacious and offers enough room for the passengers to sit comfortably. The seats are also well cushioned and are wrapped with premium upholstery. The car gets 7.7 inch TFT i-MID screen, 7-inch advanced display touch screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other vital features are Honda satellite-linked navigation system, inbuilt wifi receiver, 2USB audio interface, AAC playback, Bluetooth audio and handsfree telephone and climate control unit.
Under the hood, Honda Accord is powered by the 2.0 L petrol motor that is paired with a 1.3 kW electric motor. The engine can generate the power output of 145PS and 175Nm of torque while the electric motor produces 181bhp and 315 Nm of torque. The combined power output stands at 215PS and a total of 490Nm of torque throughput.
As far as the safety aspects are concerned, Honda Accord sedan has received the NHTSA’s highest overall rating of five stars. The safety features include 6 airbags, ISOFIX and anchor for the child seats, ABS with EBD, hill start assist, multi-angle rearview camera, programmable auto door lock/unlock, front and rear parking sensors and engine immobilizer. Other aspects include vehicle stability assist, active cornering lamps, emergency stop signal and rear defogger. The car also comes equipped with LaneWatch system that uses the front camera to illuminate blind spot in the ORVMs.
Honda Accord is offered in only one variant that is the hybrid one. In terms of pricing, Honda Accord Hybrid gets the price tag of Rs. 43.21 lakh, ex-showroom, New Delhi. Honda Accord currently takes on the likes such as Volkswagen Passat, Skoda Superb and Toyota Camry hybrid in the premium sedan segment.

Interior

Inside, the dashboard is minimalistic and that works pretty well in favour of the car. And honestly, the fit and finish of the car are on par with what German rivals are offering. The gorgeous layering of the centre console can compel anyone to spend more time in the cabin. The two big screens at the centre catch the attention instantly. The upper 7-inch screen shows navigation, time, audio information and displays visuals from the camera mounted below the left wing mirror known as LaneWatch. The lower 7.7-inch screen is meant for entertainment and information of the hybrid system. The same infotainment also supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay while the source of decibels is the 6-speakers sound system.
Another super cool feature in the car includes remote starting of the engine for powering up the air conditioning. This is really helpful in the blistering summer when you are in dire need of cooling. The plethora of comfort features include one-touch electric sunroof, automatic climate control, 8-way power adjustable driver seat with memory function, push-button engine start, rear ac vents, cruise control and rain sensing wipers among others.
The leather or piano black & wood finishing on the steering wheel really uplifts the premium quotient. The instrument cluster features advanced combimeter with a multi-information display including dual tripmeter and average fuel consumption. The elite buyers would love to be seated in the utter comfort environment this car provides. The space is humongous, despite the fact that the wheelbase is slightly shorter than the previous model. There is so much legroom and the car let you move the seat of the front passenger for more stretching. The headroom and shoulder room has also been improved from the previous versions. The seats are upholstered in premium ivory leather and the double stitching and outstanding support give extremely comfortable experience to the rear passengers. The car now feels much more luxury with the improved quality of the door pads.

Exterior

The ninth generation Accord certainly looks sophisticated than the previous versions. It features a sharp and handsome design that despite being new, shows the traits of the previous generation Accord. The face really looks flamboyant and futuristic featuring LED headlights with auto levelling and active cornering functionality. The stuffy nose of the previous version has been replaced by a more compact one. The thick chrome grille is now part of every Honda sedan in the country. Then the road presence is further strengthened from bright LED daytime running lights. The front bumper also features a wide air dam with a honeycomb mesh grille and LED fog lamps on each corner.
The new Accord is the lengthiest in the segment but that does not mean this would translate to more interior space. The hybrid powertrain takes up a lot of space. This has been done to make the car suppler and stiffer by about 40 percent. The muscular stance is accentuated by the flared wheel arches and 18-inch alloys. There are strong creases running across the shoulder line. There is more chrome on the door handles and the window sills that enhance the premium quotient. At the rear, the LED tail lamps are detailed while the rear spoiler and thick chrome strip just give the car the right amount of muscle it needs.

Mileage Running Cost

With hybrid technology on board, Honda claims that Accord offers highest fuel economy in the segment. The sedan has also an ECON button and pressing this enhances the fuel economy which the company claims is 23.1kmpl, certified by ARAI.

Comfort Suspension

The suspension system in Accord seems to be clearly biased towards the comfort side. It filters out road undulations quite well providing comfortable and stress-free driving experience. The road noise is par with the German counterparts. This is possible because of the active noise cancellation system which includes dual microphones, audio system speakers and an electronic processor that keep off low-frequency sound of the roads from filtering into the cabin. The steering is also accurate, well weighted with a nice grip and fair amount of stability at high speeds.

Engine Performance

The premium sedan sources its power from the 2.0L i-VTEC engine which produces 145PS and 175Nm of max torque. The powertrain is coupled with a 1.3 kWh Li-ion battery which generates 183PS and 315Nm of max torque. The joint power production comes to an impressive 215PS and 490Nm of peak torque. The power is transmitted via e-CVT gearbox that provides three driving modes viz. EV Mode, ECON Mode and Sport Mode. Where EV is meant for pure electric operation, ECON mode and Sport mode are for enhanced fuel efficiency and performance respectively.
The hybrid models are known for silent start and this one is no exception. It’s only when you press the accelerator a bit you will come to know that the car is alive. The pure electric mode can support till 2kms and then engine takes the charge. The transition from electric to gasoline is also seamless with pleasantly crisp throttle response. The demeanour of the car is relaxed and blends perfectly with a certain level of smoothness which is complemented by CVT gearbox.

Braking Safety

The stopping power of the brakes comes from the disc brakes at both front and rear. The car comes to halt without creating any fuss. Further, the new Accord Hybrid equipped with ABS with EBD, 6 airbags, brake assist, traction control, ESP and Hill Assist. The vehicle also comes with an exclusive feature named LaneWatch which detects blind spot with the help of a camera fitted below the left rear view mirror.
Honda Accord is fortified with ACE body structure which helps absorb impact. Some other safety essentials include rear parking sensors, ISOFIX and Anchor for Child Seats, active cornering lamps, acoustic vehicle alert system (AVAS), immobiliser & security alarm system and emergency stop signal (ESS).
