Overview

Ford with its new Freestyle has joined the fray of the cross hatchback segment. These cars are interesting inventions as they merge both the compactness of the hatch and the SUV-like body details. In the recent times, many new cars in the same segment have been launched by the manufacturers as people are surprisingly pleased by the looks and compact nature of these vehicles.
Ford is calling this car as a CUV short for Compact Utility Vehicle but in terms of style and features, more or less it looks as the beefed up version of the new Figo hatchback. This sub-4 meter cross hatch makes it quite hard to resist when we consider its amazing ride quality, raised ground clearance and a new petrol engine.
On the outside, there is no denying the fact that Ford Freestyle is basically a Figo draped in a rugged body. However, there are some prominent changes of its own. Ford Freestyle gets the latest hexagonal radiator grille that has been carried forward to the upcoming Figo and Aspire facelift. The grille seems to be sleeker and the new mesh pattern looks sportier, its headlamps look subtle with finer chrome detailing and C-shaped surrounds for the fog lamps.
On the side, it gets hefty body cladding, pronounced bumper and roof rails that add to a sense of ruggedness. Freestyle gets the 15-inch cross section tyres that look appealing. At the rear end, it gets a new bumper and subtle tail lamps with altered graphics. Ford Freestyle is offered in six different colour patterns such as Canyon ridge, Smoke Grey, White Gold, Moondust Silver, Oxford White and Absolute Black.
Talking about the interiors, the one who is aware of Figo and Aspire will find the Freestyle’s cabin quite familiar. However, it shares its design cues with the Figo hatch but the company has provided the much-needed enhancement that will definitely lift the mood inside. The center console has been redesigned and it now features the floating 6.5-inch screen that connects with Bluetooth and also supports Ford’s SYNC3, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The seats are quite comfy while the black and brown fabric upholstery complements the dashboard very well. Other features included in the long list are Air conditioning unit, Rear parking camera, 2 USB slots, 12V charging socket, climate control, keyless entry, push engine start/stop button and height adjustable driver seat.
Coming to its powertrain, Ford Freestyle sources its power from 1.5L diesel and 1.2L Dragon series petrol mill. Its diesel engine can produce the power output of 96PS and peak torque of 120Nm, while its petrol oil burner can deliver the power output of 100PS and belts the peak torque of 215Nm. Both the engines come mated to the five-speed manual gearbox.
Ford never compromises when it comes to safety and this car is no exception. It scores high in terms of safety features that include airbags, engine immobilizer, hill assist, traction control, rear wiper, child safety lock, ABS with EBD, automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers.
Ford Freestyle is available in four different variants; Ambient, Trend, Titanium and Titanium+. In terms of pricing, its base model Ambient gets the price tag of Rs. 5.09 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 6.09 lakh for the diesel variant. Its top spec model Titanium+ diesel is available at the price tag of Rs. 7.35 lakh while the petrol top variant can be availed at Rs. 6.94 lakh. Currently, Ford Freestyle’s immediate rivals include Hyundai i20 Active and Honda WR-V in the segment.

Interior

One of the few reasons why Ford Figo wasn’t catching up the competition was because of its interiors. This time around, Ford has fixed some issues and fully equipped this car with oodles of comfort and safety. The dashboard is now more reddish brown with glass black accents as compared to plain jane black/silver dashboard. The instrument cluster has nice silver touching that compliments well with the rest of the dashboard. The upholstery of the seats has also been changed to give it a more vibrant look.
The main highlight of the cabin is, of course, the new 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment, paired to company’s SYNC3 system. The display gives high definition visuals and slick to operate just like our smartphones. The infotainment is further given the power of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, looking at the ‘need of the hour’ factor. Another important addition is the addition of 2 USB slot and one 12V volt charging point so that your devices are not out of juice.
The cabin is also home to plenty of storage spaces including 7 cup and bottle holders, a soft touch self and a cubby hole to store other knick-knacks on the go. Other features in the car include automatic climate control, auto headlamps, keyless entry and Ford’s MyKey for limiting speeds and volume levels. And with a reasonable boot space of 257L, you can still fit sizable luggage for your journey.

Exterior

For a person familiar with Figo, he would recognize that there are obvious changes. You get a new grille design, revamped bumpers, revised side skirts as well as different set of alloys. Talking about the front façade, the honeycomb grille looks chunkier and sportier with gloss black treatment. The smoked headlights are carried forward with some minor chrome detailing.
The side profile is what makes the real difference with plastic cladding on the wheel arches and side skirts along with new set of dark-grey painted 15-inch alloy wheels. The racing like decals on the side looks great while the roof rack on the top has the capacity to hold weight up to 50 kgs.
The rear profile upholds the same design treatment as that of the front while the plastic skid plates and plastic cladded faux vents and bumper give the car an elevated look. The tail lamps have also been re-profiled to look distinct from the sibling Figo.

Mileage Running Cost

Ford is offering a naturally aspirated petrol engine which is not only powerful but fuel efficient too. The 1.2L petrol unit can deliver ARAI certified mileage of 19kmpl. On the diesel front, the 1.5L engine is capable of returning ARAI certified mileage of 24.4kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

As a cross hatch, Ford has given different suspension set-up to this car. The Freestyle is unruffled at bumpy roads and the suspension filters most of the bangs easily with little of the road shock transferred to the steering. The whole suspension has been fitted so well that one would think the car has been made only for bumpy roads.
Besides, the high-speed stability is nothing short of impressive.

Engine Performance

Ford Freestyle is the first model in the portfolio to get new 1.2L naturally aspirated 3-cylinder Ti-VCT petrol engine which pumps out 96PS and 120Nm of max torque. The engine is remarkably quiet at urban speeds with smooth build-up of speed.
The 1.5L diesel engine one, on the other hand, is the same working in siblings Figo hatch, Aspire, and EcoSport. The motor makes 100PS and 215Nm of peak torque. Response is nice with the linear power delivery. Both the engines come mated to 5-speed manual transmission which is light and crisp.

Braking Safety

The brakes of this car are beautifully calibrated and offer strong bite force. It seems this car has been set-up by driving enthusiasts. The safety kit of this car is a big attention with the dual airbags, ABS and reverse parking as standard fitment.
Move to the top variants and you get 6 airbags with a host of safety tech including electronic stability control, hill launch assist, traction control and active rollover protection. So in terms of safety, Ford Freestyle comes with flying colours.
