Since 2003, Ford Endeavour has been one of the most popular SUVs in the Indian market. There have been several changes during this over a decade and half period with the last generation model launched back in 2016 being the crucial one. It has now grown up from a pure Sports Utility Vehicle to one of the most tech-loaded vehicles in this price range. With the advent of new rivals including Skoda Kodiaq and Mahindra Alturas G4 in this time period, it was necessary to bring a more sophisticated model of the last version. And Ford did it well as the new 2019 model now comes with styling tweaks at the outside and subtle changes inside to enhance the comfort levels. In the engine department, Ford Endeavour continues to be powered with the same engine options as there in the earlier model.
On the outside, taking a closer look will reveal two alterations immediately. One is the smoke finishing on the headlamps and the new dual toned black-diamond cut 18-inch alloy wheels. The grille at the front is now a bit larger and comes with sharp detailing. The bumper has been revised to spare more room for silver faux skid plate while there is larger daytime running LEDs in the headlamp cluster. There are no changes in terms of design at the rear except the new LED elements in the tail lamp cluster. In terms of dimensions, the revised bumper and the side step plates have increased the length and width slightly. Now the car measures 4903mm in length, 1869mm in width, 1837mm in height while the wheelbase stands at 2850mm. The SUV now gets a new colour option named Diffused Silver while the other remain the same including Moondust Silver, Diamond White, Sunset Red, Absolute Black and Smoke Grey.
Inside, you have to be a hardcore enthusiast to spot the difference as the changes are subtle. The new modification includes black leather finishing on the dashboard which has replaced the earlier chocolate brown leather scheme. There is minor tweak in the design of the gear lever as it is meatier to hold while the metallic accents makes it more upmarket than before. The car also gets some new features in the form of new key fob which feels a lot more superior than the older one. Other added comfort comes in the form of push engine start/stop button, powered co-driver seat and also handsfree boot opening functionality. You just have to slide your foot under the boot and the door will open.
The SUV continues to offer comfort features such as panoramic sunroof, ambient lightening, 8-way power adjustable driver seat, electrically adjustable/foldable ORVM, 2nd row 60:40 split, 3rd row 50:50 flat fold, semi auto parallel Park assist and dual zone automatic climate control. In terms of infotainment, it continues to feature the same 8-inch touchscreen panel with Ford SYNC 3 along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity embedded with navigation. The decibels are powered by 10-speaker system with sub-woofer and amplifier.
In terms of safety, the carmaker has given almost everything as part of the standard fitment. The SUV comes with dual front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control with rollover mitigation and traction control, hill launch assist and rear view camera with active parking guideline. Other standard safety aspects include front and rear fog lamps, volumetric burglar alarm system, tyre pressure monitoring system and cruise control with adjustable speed limiter. The top variants also gets driver knee airbag, front parking sensors, hill descent control and electrochromic inner rear view mirror.
As far as specifications are concerned, the SUV remain unchanged with the same set of diesel engine options. The base models get the 2.2L 4-cylinder TDCi diesel engine that produces 160PS and 385Nm of max torque, paired to either 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox. The engine comes only with the rear-wheel drive system. The top of the range model sources its power from the 3.2L 5-cylinder TDCi diesel unit that pumps out 200PS and 470Nm of peak torque, paired to 6-speed automatic transmission. This top of the line variant comes with 4x4 mechanism which means you can go for brutal off-roading. In terms of mileage, the 4x2 variant can deliver ARAI certified fuel economy of 12.62 kmpl, the 4x4 variant is capable of delivering 11.9kmpl.
The carmaker has priced this vehicle competitively. The base Titanium 4x2 model is priced at Rs. 28.19 lakhs, the mid-range Titanium 4x2 is tagged at Rs. 30.6 lakh while the top of the line Titanium Plus 4x4 will cost Rs. 32.97 lakh, ex-showroom. The new Ford Endeavour 2019 will continue to lock horns with the arch rivals Toyota Fortuner, Isuzu MU-X and also with some new ones including Mahindra Alturas G4 and Skoda Kodiaq in the segment.
It would be a bit of effort to spot the changes in the new Ford Endeavour. The alterations are understated and may go completely unobserved. Right from the seats to the design of the dashboard and even the switches and buttons are reminiscent to the older version. Now you don’t need to search for your key any anymore as the car gets the passive keyless entry. All you have to do is to jump onto the driver’s seat and press the push engine start/stop button and you are ready to go.
The new version does not witness any major in-cabin changes as against the model it replaces. Some of the notable changes are black dashboard top replacing the old mocha brown scheme and a redesigned gear selector that now feels nicer to hold and which also gets sleek chrome inserts. Moreover, while the driver will get an 8-way power adjustable driver seat as standard, in the top Titanium plus variant, the front passenger will also get one.
Having said that, the carmaker has missed some important opportunities for the improvement. For example, the steering is only tilt adjustable, not reach. However, you will easily find the perfect driving position since the ergonomics are top notch, but the addition of reach adjustability would have been icing on the cake. Further, the second-row seats do not tumble forward, its only foldable forward. This makes access to the third row a bit trickier even if we talk about the short height adults. However, in this area the carmaker does a good job. It not only offers 1-touch seat tumbling for easy access but also more space at the last row.
Apart from this, Endeavour’s charm lies in its upmarket interiors and the commanding driving position that makes anyone feel confident on the go. The car also comes with updated list of features making it a premium buy among its leak. These aspects include panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, leatherette upholstery and 8-inch touchscreen unit with Ford SYNC3. The infotainment also supports latest smartphone connectivity features such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The decibels are powered by 10-speaker music system with sub-woofer and amplifier for that vigorous music experience.
The new Endeavour has also added the usefulness of hands-free tailgate opening functionality. For this you just have to swipe your foot under the boot and voila, the tailgate will open like a magic. Where in terms of practicality the car scores brownie points, it is not much spacious looking from the perspective of bulky exteriors. Although, the second row has enough room even for the six-footer, but it’s not outstanding. The middle-row seats are unexpectedly closer to the floor while the tall passengers will experience under-thigh support and average headroom. Also, if we look at the side steps, the car is still an old school SUV in terms of ingress and egress. So, it would be a bit of effort for the elder members in the family to get in and out.
As far as practicality is concerned, SUV sticks to its functional roots. With all the seats in standard position, you will get 450L of boot space. However, folding the last row in the 50:50 ratio, will extend the space to 1050L. Drop down the second row and you will get 2010L of massive boot space.
The new update has made the Endeavour bigger and muscular which perfectly follows the old school SUV trait. The dimensions have slightly changed with the front bumper adding 11mm to the overall length and the side steps adding about 9mm to the width. But what remains unchanged is the pure American charm which perfectly contrasts the uptight design of the immediate rival Fortuner. There are no sharp lines and no super sleek headlights as seen in the Fortuner, you get the same bulbous body panels for which the car is known for.
Besides new and clean front bumper, the grille has also been revised a bit. Come to the side and the new Fortuner shows the same plus-size looks. Although the wheel size remains the same 18-inch, the design is new with dual-tone theme and diamond cut shape. At the back, the SUV gets no updates except the LED tail lights becoming the part of standard package.
Rest of the exterior package remain the same with features including HID projector headlights, chrome door handles, HID projector headlamps and bulky skid plates. Sadly, the car doesn’t retain the headlamp washer functionality which was omitted during the series of silent upgrade the car went through all these years.
The smaller engine in the new Ford Endeavour is a more sensible pick as far as fuel efficiency is concerned as it delivers 14.2kmpl with the manual and 12.62kmpl. The bigger 3.2L engine is capable of returning 11.9kmpl. But expect the real world numbers much lesser than this.
Being a burly SUV, it is more than capable of ironing out road imperfections with absolute ease when it comes to being thrashed around. However, since the car underpins the old-school ladder frame chassis, you will continue to experience slight bounces from the suspension while hitting sharp thuds. This is particularly more noticeable in the second row especially if there are two or more passengers occupying the seats. But on the other hand, weigh down this SUV with full load of passengers and this issue is sorted out.
The steering feedback remains top notch as before. It can be even compared to some hatchbacks while driving at city speeds and weighing upright as the speed increases. And since it’s an SUV, it will behave like that only. What it means is that while you can have fun throwing this car at corners, you will also experience plenty of body roll at the same time. The steering response does instil confidence while taking sharp turns, but since it’s a body on frame SUV, it is not recommended to push this car like a sedan.
For off-roading, there is plenty of ground clearance (225mm) and Ford Terrain Response system which offers Normal, Snow, Grass, Mud, Sand & Rock mode with the last one engaging with the 4x4 low range.
The main question has to be addressed right in the beginning. No, the carmaker hasn’t given Thai spec 2.0L bi-turbo motor and neither the new 10-speed automatic gearbox. The folks here will get the same engine options in the form of 2.2L 4-cylinder unit and the 3.2L 5-cylinder mill. The power numbers remain identical as well with the 2.0L motor making 160PS and 385Nm of torque, the 3.2L is good for producing 200PS and 470Nm of peak torque. However, the 6-speed manual transmission now re-joins the 2.2L engine.
Sadly, unlike the arch rival Fortuner, the Endeavour can’t be availed in the 4x4 and manual combination. The all-wheel drive option is only available with the larger 3.2L engine, married to 6-speed automatic transmission. There is also Ford’s Terrain Response system that arms this SUV with some of the serious off-road capabilities. The car is able to tackle tricky terrains with ease be it sand dunes of desert or worst of rough roads.
Out on the open roads, the SUV feel familiar as with the brawny 3.2L model it doesn’t bat an eye driving cross country throughout the day. However, you would still want quicker shifts from the automatic gearbox, but other than this the experience remains foreseeable as ever. Despite its bulky size, the car is quite manageable within city premises.
The carmaker hasn’t skimped on any of the safety aspects. The SUV gets disc brakes on all the wheels which are more than enough to do a predictable job of halting the car quickly. This along with safety aspects such as 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC with rollover mitigation and traction control has enabled this car to grab 5-star safety ratings.
Other safety features in the car include hill launch assist, front and rear fog lamps, tyre pressure monitoring system, cruise control, front parking sensors, hill descent control and rear view camera with active parking guideline.

Drive this in city or take this on hills and off road, you will feel proud. Being a longest car in Indian SUV the 3rd row is also comfortable (However Innova's 3rd row has more comfort) than any other SUV's.
