Overview

We Indian's love SUV's but there are many who want the looks and presence but not the huge thirst and size and not to mention the big costs involved in owning one. Ford knows this and with the EcoSport it aims to redefine the Indian market. It dazzled visitors at the 2012 Auto Expo in January Delhi and now it has finally launched its much awaited baby. Ford will build the compact, fuel-efficient urban SUV in China, in addition to India, Thailand and South America. Looks are the EcoSport's biggest asset and it simply looks unlike anything else. The design is muscular but also compact (it is sub-four metre SUV) and packs in a whole lot of details. The EcoSport which is based on the Fiesta platform is a shining example of the new Ford design language.

The beltine for example which is formed by the windows and door creases, draws an ascending curve that rises as it runs to the rear of the car. The large trapezoidal grille is another characteristic of the Ford design DNA which gives the signature Ford face, like the other new global designs. More interesting details include inclined A pillars and a short hood. At the back, a large rear window that wraps around to the sides along with oblique tail-lamps. The swing gate handle is built into the tail-lamp and is another highlight of the Ford EcoSport's innovative design. The spare tyre, with an exclusively designed wheel, is mounted on the swing-out door. Step inside and the design of the interiors are influenced by the Fiesta sedan which is a no bad thing. It has the sporty looking centre console with neatly stacked buttons.

The design and overall quality feel also has been improved. On the features front expect a lot of equipment on the EcoSport such as a CD/MP3 player, USB/auxiliary slots, cooled glove box, steering controls, Smart Keyless Entry, rear parking sensors and Bluetooth. There is also the neat voice control feature. The talking point in the EcoSport is the all-new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine which will be economical plus will be fun to drive and is set to change the way we think about small engines. Ford says that the turbocharged 1 litre EcoBoost can compete with a traditional 1.6 litre petrol engine, delivering full torque at just 1500rpm. This engine makes 125 PS and 170Nm which is ample by any standards. But a diesel is important and the EcoSport features a 1.5 diesel 90 PS from the Fiesta sedan which is torquey and fun to drive. The EcoSport Petrol EcoBoost promises 18.9 kmpl while the diesel will give 22.7 kmpl which is fantastic. Other than these two engines the third engine is a 1.5 110 bhp petrol. There are four trim options with the base version called as Ambiente then you have Trend, Titanium and Titatnium optional. The EcoSport is the most important launch for Ford and looking at the success of the Renault Duster, the EcoSport is destined to be a huge hit on the basis of what we have seen. The EcoSport will be available in 4 variants and in 8 colour options. Ford have priced it very well and the EcoSport starts at Rs 5.59 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) and Rs 6.69 lakh for the base diesel which is great value for money. For a detailed analysis read below.

On the features front expect a lot of equipment on the EcoSport such as a CD/MP3 player, USB/auxiliary slots, cooled glove box, steering controls, Smart Keyless Entry, rear parking sensors, push button start and Bluetooth. There is also a cool thing called as SYNC which means you tell the system any functions or tasks to do and it will do it. Things like using your MP3 player with your voice, listening your texts, streaming music and of course hands free calling.

There is also the neat voice control feature. Even the base variants will be decently equipped. Ford has also made the EcoSport practical with twenty storage spaces inside, 60:40 split rear seats and 346 ltrs trunk capacity. Despite the compact dimensions Ford has managed to squeeze out some room at the back and space is on par with rivals. There is decent legroom at the back and as we had found out the EcoSport is reasonably spacious.

Comfort Suspension

The ride in the EcoSport is neither firm nor soft and is perfect. The electric steering is light and direct and the 10.6m turning circle means that this SUV is perfect for city driving. The 200 mm ground clearance is decent as well! Yet another peice of information is that the EcoSport has a water wading ability of 550mm.

Comfort and Suspension

  • Comfort

We drove over bad roads and undulations but the EcoSport seemed to swallow these pretty well with just a tad of stiffness.

Engine Performance

The all-new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine is economical plus is fun to drive and is set to change the way we think about small engines. Ford says that the turbocharged 1 litre EcoBoost can compete with a traditional 1.6 litre petrol engine, delivering full torque at just 1500rpm. This engine makes 125 PS and 170Nm which is ample by any standards. This engine will however be available only on the Titanium and Titanium Optional variants. As always a diesel is important and the EcoSport features a 1.5 diesel from the Fiesta sedan which is torquey and fun to drive. There is also a bigger 110 bhp 1.5 litre petrol engine and this engine will come with an automatic gearbox..

The 90PS diesel is crucial for India as diesel is important but that 1.0 litre engine might even tempt those looking for a diesel. Transmission's on offer will be a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed PowerShift automatic transmission. This smooth autobox will make the EcoSport the only SUV in its class to offer a dual clutch 'box and it is efficient as well. This auto option will only be in the petrol variant and this gearbox delivers good efficiency figures as well.

Engine Performance

Ford EcoSport in all its three engines has strong acceleration

  • Top Speed

EcoSport diesel has top speed of 170 kmph

  • In Gear Acceleration

EcoBoost engine has 170Nm of torque

  • NVH Levels

NVH levels are good on the Ford EcoSport

Braking Safety

Ford has also equipped the EcoSport with Hill Launch Assist which means that it stops the car from rolling back for a few seconds after you take your foot off the brake, giving you time to smoothly accelerate away. When it comes to safety the EcoSport has ABS, ESP and traction control plus dual front airbags and side curtain airbags which more than what its rivals offer up.

Brakes and Wheels

  • Handling

You can throw the SUV into corners at high speeds without having to worry about body roll or nil feedback. Talking about suspension, dampers and springs have been tuned for India and the balance between comfort and handling is nearly perfect.

  • Braking Performance

ABS with EBD works well and braking is strong on EcoSport.

  • Safety Features

It also has dual front airbags and side curtain airbags which more than what its rivals offer up. Plus ABS

    Very congested

I bought the Ecosport 6 months back and I realize it's essentially a 4-seater out of which 2 people should have short legs. It has a massive boot and can take in a lot of stuff but I do not understand why some of it could not be converted into cabin space. When my parents sit on the rear seat Read More
