Review of Linea 2012-2014

Launched in 2009, the Linea was Fiat's weapon in the exploding C segment sedans in India. It had stunning looks, was packed with equipment and you could sense Fiat had thought of every minute detail. The pricing was good as well, the result was that the Linea instantly took off. However the influx of new cars namely the new Honda City made things difficult for it. Then in late 2010 Fiat launched the turbo-petrol Linea, the T-jet.
However despite all that the sales ride has been a bumpy one for Fiat despite delivering some great products as the company has not managed to make the impact that it hoped to make. For example , the company managed to sell just over a thousand units of the Linea in the last 6 months of 2011! Things are slightly different now as Fiat has new optimism and new plans to make it a success story in the cut throat Indian market. Those new plans include the Fiat Caffe in which Fiat is aiming to improve customer interaction and increase its brand presence in the Indian market. However just doing that is not enough as competition is growing day by day. With rivals like the Skoda Rapid and the Hyundai Verna , Fiat needed to give its Linea an upgrade. The 2012 Fiat Linea is basically an upgrade and is equipped with some new features to make it enticing to the Indian customer. Have they done finally cracked the code? Somnath Chatterjee finds out.

The same minimalistic yet elegant theme is carried on the inside. The design of the dashboard is retro looking and sure will be fancied by most. The buttons on the dash are logically laid out and all the function are pretty simple to operate. My favourite part of the interiors is the cool looking dials. I found the steering wheel to be a touch too bulky and a bit too near to the driver. Ofcourse there is tilt steering standard across the range but still the steering wheel is too big for my liking. The cabin quality has seen some improvement and everything feels solid and well put together. The interiors now have a lighter beige theme comprising of fabric seats and floor carpet , dashboard and door trims. This does make the cabin feel airy. Space at the front is very good and at the rear there is adequate thigh support but headroom is lacking probably due to the low-slung design of the car. The 500 ltr boot capacity is very good and it swallows most of your luggage.
The 2012 Linea is loaded with tons of kit including automatic climate control, rear air conditioning vents, My car and Blue&Me. I liked the 'My Car' feature as it is an on-board computer that offers you a host of functions like a digital odometer, mileage indicator, distance to emty indicator etc. The Blue&Me which has been jointly deevloped with Microsoft integrates your phone and music player with the car. The 2012 Linea now also has rain sensing wipers and auto switch on/off headlamps. Both of these are very useful features especially in case of the auto switch on/off headlamps where driving in foggy conditions or at night will become much easier. Another important change is the more effective air conditioning something that will be widely appreciated for sure!

Have you ever seen an Italian car and didn't like its looks? Me neither. The Linea is a thing of classic beauty. There are no complex surafaces or endless curves or slashes, just plain and simple beauty. The Linea is a big car and has immense presence but the design has been beautifully executed so that it does not end up looking flabby. My favourite bits about the car's design include the classic chrome radiator grille, the dual front Parabola headlamps and those gorgeous 16 inch alloy wheels. The Linea looks like a proper sedan and not something with a boot slapped on. The side-profile again shows an elegant look which is simple and extremely classy. The rear is simple and good looking as well!
The changes in the 2012 Linea include a new exterior colour called ‘Oceanic Blue’. We think the Linea looks the best in this colour. However there are also seven delectable colour options from which you can choose! Another change is the ground clearance - Fiat customers wanted more ground clearance in their cars and thus the company has increased it and now claim that the Linea has a best-in-class 185mm ground clearance. The Linea Emotion variant also gets 16 inch alloys from the T-jet variant. The enhanced ground clearance leaves some space between the wheels and the wheel arches and the Linea looks the best wearing the biggest wheels as it complements the design. As you can see there have been no major changes to the exteriors of the Linea in the 2012 model other than the new colour but despite the design being three years old now, it still looks great and it is one of the best looking mid-size sedans in the Indian automobile market and definitely stands out from the Verna's and City's.

Comfort Suspension

Superb simply superb! That in a word sums up the ride and handling of the Linea. It is one of the best if not the best in its class. As I said earlier Fiat have increased ground clearance to 185mm and that helps in the ride quality department. It goes over bumps and potholes in a way no other midsize sedan does and it’s amazing. At low speeds it is very good and you do not feel bad roads at all. At high speeds if not anything it is even better, this is one area where the Linea beats its rivals by a long shot.
However while the ride is great the the increase in ground clearance has compromised on the handling a little bit. The handling is not as sharp as it was earlier and enthusiasts will certainly miss that but I think most appreciate the improved ride quality more as it has the best ride in its segment at the moment. Make no mistake the handling is still along with the class best but it has become just a little bit softer than before. The refinement is average though and there is some clutter seeping in the cabin.
Again the steering on the Linea is one of the best, unlike others in this segment it is not light instead it is delightfully precise but it is not heavy at parking speeds and the steering comes with a lot of feel something the Fiat lovers know for sure!
The stability at high speeds is good and ABS with EBD (available on Dynamic and Emotion) make for a satisfying braking performance.

Engine Performance

For the 2012 Linea there are two engine options to choose from. There is the 1.4 Fire petrol with 90 PS and the well known 1.3 Multijet diesel with 93 PS. The petrol is a good motor delivering a robust amount of power. Floor the accelerator and the engine is responsive. Power delivery is smooth but as far as petrols go this engine is no where as fun as the T-jet variant. The sheer brute force of the T-jet is missing but for tarffic an occassional highway use it is fine though.
The engine to watch out for is the 1.3 Multijet diesel. We are all familliar with this great engine and one drive with this engine shows that this is easily the pick of the range. The 93 PS and the 209 Nm of torque at 2000 rpm make for a satisfying drive. At first there turbo-lag present and you certainly feel it but after 1500 rpm or so the car gathers great pace and the performance delivery is quite strong. In the highways it does high speeds with ease and the engine does not feel strained at all. The Linea is a big and heavy car yet with 93 PS it feels quite fast and all that torque helps too. The gears are also cleverly laid out to extract all the performance and in the city you are never left wanting for power. A 5-speed manual is standard across the range and there is no automatci available as yet, it is not a short-throw gearbox like on a Honda City and it is on the heavy side but the throws are perfect and shift action is satisfying enough.
