Review of 4 Series

  • Overview

In the past, the 3 Series models were offered in sedan, coupe and convertible body forms. BMW, however, has introduced a new nomenclature for its models. According to which, all the sedans of the firm will use odd-numbers in their names, whereas, the convertible and coupe forms will carry even numbers on their nameplate. As a result, while the new 3 Series models are called the same as before, the coupe and convertible forms of the car will be billed as 4 Series from now on, and not 3 Series Coupe or Convertible. Mechanically, the 3 Series sedan and 4 Series Coupe/Convertible models will be identical.

The 4 Series marks a change in BMW’s nomenclature and design direction. While it mechanically remains the same as its odd-numbered counterpart, the 4 Series brings the sporty side of BMW cars to purists. The 4 Series models are significantly lighter and therefore offer a little bit of performance and handling advantage to the 4 Series BMW cars. It will be made available in coupe and convertible body-style in global markets.

The first in the 4 Series range of cars to land on to the Indian shores is its performance derivative, the M4 Coupe. Technically, the M4 Coupe is the replacement for the M3 Coupe of previous years, but in BMW’s new naming scheme it is an all new model.

On the styling front, the BMW 4 Series exudes a powerful and more sporty stance. Up on front, the 4 Series models come equipped with adaptive LED headlamps with LED DRL rings that give it a classic as well as a typical BMW sporty flair. Among other visual upgrades that confirm the 4 Series's sporty nature are resculpted front bumper, signature kidney grille, stalk mounted side mirrors, integrated boot lid spoiler, polished rear spoiler etc.

BMW unarguably makes the finest of drivers’ cars in the world. Add the letter ‘M’ into the mix, and things become even more interesting, and of course, very racy as well. Of all the BMW cars its M-Division tweaks and fettles, the M3 sedan is one name that has always reigned atop. Taking the baton forward from the old BMW M3 Coupe now is the new model which is called the M4 Coupe. The new M4 Coupe is the performance version of the otherwise sedate 4 Series Coupe.

The new M4 Coupe receives a raft of updates as compared to the outgoing model. While the new M4 looks more lithe and slender than its predecessor (M3 Coupe), the major upgrade on the new car comes in form of a new powertrain. In the new BMW M4 sedan, the firm has waved adieu to the naturally aspirated V8 engine of the past in favour of a twin-turbocharged in-line 6 petrol engine. It may have missed out on 2 cylinders and the V-configuration of the older car, but in actual, the new powertrain is more powerful, torquier and more efficient than before!

    It's a Beast!

This is a track-oriented car which can be driven on the road, so the reviews should also reflect that fact. I am not going to write anything about comfort or fuel-efficiency because those are not the qualities you are looking for if you want to buy this car. The looks of the car reflect the sporty nature of the car; Read More
