Overview

Audi always bring forth cars which have the perfect balance of power and looks. In India, Audi S5 came as a good looking, performance driven car that also has a sporty punch in it. The vehicle is a flashy sibling to the A4 sedan. This is one of the vehicles which are liked by performance oriented Audi lovers who are also searching after a car that can be driven around every day. In short, it’s a daily driven performance car made for fascinating the enthusiasts. The S5 Sportsback comes from the company’s bratpack family of cars which also includes A5 and RS5 Coupe. The 2017 Audi S5 gets numerous changes on the inside and out while its engine configurations are also tweaked.
Audi S5 Sportsback is the beautiful car, the flawless lines on the bonnet and tapered roofline along with the sharp fenders adds to the aggressiveness to the overall design. The new generation S5 is 34mm longer, 11mm narrower and 5mm shorter than the older version while the wheelbase is 14mm longer. On the sides, the 18-inch wheels provide strong and appealing looks to the vehicle. At the back, tail lamps are sharply cut and are beautifully placed. Audi S5 is available in vibrant colours for the buyers to choose from they are Tango Red Metallic, Mythos Black, Blue Graphite Metallic, Green Mica Metallic, Ibis White, Floret Silver Metallic, Daytona Grey and Glacier White Metallic.
Talking about the interiors, Audi S5 gets one of the most appealing cabins. The seats in the front are well-bolstered and the horizontal dashboard design with high quality material makes the car look amazing. Minimalist centre console, MMI touch sensitive unit and air conditioning all resembles the A4 and look familiar but pleasing. The equipment list includes smartphone connectivity, 19 speaker music system coming from Bang & Olufsen, 3-zone climate control system, panoramic sunroof and virtual cockpit. Other features in the list automatic headlamps, memory functions for front seats, rear camera with semi-autonomous parking and engine start/stop button.
Talking about the Audi S5 specifications, the vehicle is powered by the turbocharged 3.0L V6 unit that can generate the power output of 354PS and the mammoth torque of 500Nm. In the vehicle the power is delivered to all the four wheels via Quattro all-wheel drive setup. The sedan comes mated to 8-speed Tiptronic gearbox which helps in taking this beast from 0-100kmph mark in mere 4.7 seconds with the top speed of 250kmph.
As it’s a luxurious cum performance car, various safety aspects are included in the list. The long list of features are 8 airbags, electronic stability control, ABS, traction control, start/stop system, brake assist, electronic brakeforce distribution, electronic differential lock, tyre pressure monitoring system and ISOFIX child seat mounting.
Audi S5 performance version is available in only one variant that is the S5 3.0 TFSI Tiptronic. Talking about the pricing, the powerful Sportsback is tagged at Rs. 72.41 lakh, ex-showroom. The competitors include BMW 5-Series, Volvo S60 and Mercedes AMG CLA 45.

Interior

It would be daunting task to differentiate this brat from the regular A4 especially when you are seated at the front. Both these cars share a lot inside the cabin. Right from the horizontal dashboard styling, touch-sensitive buttons for MMI and aircons, uncluttered centre console and the usage of high quality materials, all these not only shows the familiar traits of sibling A4 but appears sophisticated and pleasing to eyes as well. However, the unique elements can be seen in the form of 3-spoke leather adorned flat-bottomed steering wheel and well-bolstered front seats.
But looking how everything is logical well in place, you can’t resist yourself to admire the cabin. Audi has also given smart touches such as partially open storage area under the driver’s armrest which is not only ergonomic but also seems to be a thoughtful approach. The car is well equipped and leaves no room for complains as far as luxury and comfort goes. It gets Audi’s MMI infotainment which is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and touch pad. The music system for the infotainment is offered by Bang & Olufsen with 755 watt 19-speakers setup. The vehicle comes with panoramic sunroof, 3-zone climate control and electrically opening and closing functionality of the boot.
Then there is Audi’s 12.3 inch Virtual Cockpit which doubles up as an instrument cluster for the driver is a treat to the eyes. The instrument cluster places every bit of the journey in front of the driver including the navigation. It can also be customized as per driving preferences. The ambient lighting package enables the passengers to tailor the interior lighting as per his liking. However, there are some shortcomings. The reversing camera resolution is not up to the standards while the positioning of the Drive Select buttons at the centre console requires some exercise.
In terms of seating, the cabin is loaded with S sport seats with pneumatic massage function. Where front seats gives you ample comfort, headroom at the rear is pretty tight especially anyone above 5.9 feet tall. This is due to low slung profile of the car. Moreover, the ingress and egress at the rear is a bit trickier too. However, there is reasonable amount of legroom but if you really want to give your legs stretch, you will be disappointed.

Exterior

You can’t resist yourself from staring at the car. The sportiness is definitely of the next level. The most fabulous aspect of this car is its lightly waving shoulder line. The manner in which that crispy gentle lines sweep from the front wheel to the rear one is a true piece of art. This really requires some meticulous manufacturing practices and Audi does it well. The stunning 18-inch alloy wheels are solid and sophisticated. The low slung profile comes from the coupe-like roofline and also the stretch between the wheels.
The dimensions of the car have also been altered to enhance the looks. The new gen Audi S5 is now longer by 34mm, narrower by 11mm, shorter by 5mm while the wheelbase is 14mm longer than the previous one. The end result is, it looks more sophisticated and practical. From the front, the new S5 features wide 3D design grille which instantly arrests your attention. The headlamps have been given squared-eye treatment and acts as a more technical aesthetic at the front. And the ridges on the headlights prove how immaculately the manufacturer has designed this car. The front bumpers are finished in brushed aluminium while the same treatment is also given to mirrors.
At the back, the fine cuts on the tail lights and how beautifully they are placed in a layered section will let the car behind know that it is not tailing a regular Audi. The roofline gracefully flows in the stubby boot. The S5 comes with quad exhaust and the integrated spoiler lip with small deflector adds more to the sporty look. Apart from exhausts, the rear diffuser also makes it look different from the A5 Sportsback. Overall, the S5 is undoubtedly a sporty and attractive vehicle which makes a lasting impression whoever sees it.

Mileage Running Cost

The German automaker has done a lot in the efficiency department. The Efficiency mode does help a bit in improving overall fuel economy of the car. The coupe is able to deliver ARAI certified mileage of 12.28 for a litre of fuel.

Comfort Suspension

The ride quality in the car is top notch over slow to medium speeds. Of course, one has to be cautious about potholes but the all-round independent suspension which is simple yet sporty, is able to handle them without breaking much sweat. However, on uneven surfaces, a little thud can be experienced. The Quattro comes to rescue at corners brilliantly with nice grip and confidence inspiring input. In the Dynamic mode, some might feel slight heaviness in the steering but this is only felt while cruising on highways.
The ground clearance is not great, and Audi hasn’t given the numbers, yet with 4 people on board it will not bottom out over speed breakers appearing sporadically

Engine Performance

Mechanically, the car is somewhat similar to the earlier generation model. The 3.0L twin-turbo TFSI V6 petrol engine produces 354 PS and 500Nm of max torque. This is 20 PS bump from the earlier version. Audi also claims that the weight has been substantially reduced by 30 kgs, so we should not be surprised if the company claims that the 0-100 sprint time (4.7 seconds) has been slashed by 0.4 seconds. The turbo V6 responds to the call pretty quickly, there is no lag and the manner in which the engine rushes to 6500rpm restraint will plaster a smile on your face.
And this not only comes from the fierceness of the acceleration but the wild soundtrack that comes with it. The exhaust note impersonates a typical racer and doesn’t screech and crunches. The engine creates a mild but pleasant fluttering sound from the exhaust as and when the 8-speed Tiptronic gearbox shifts up. The vehicle does not use the dual-clutch setup like the sibling A5 and instead uses the 8-speed unit. Though the gearbox is obedient at highways providing comfortable cruising with smooth shifts, one can experience a bit heaviness when driving the car in a hurry irrespective of the highway or city traffic.
Switch the gearbox settings to Comfort or Efficiency mode and the gearbox becomes eager to shift up. This also takes some poking of the accelerator to charge up the turbo motor. And after that the engine revs up while the transmission shifts down making the journey quite bothersome. Though the Comfort or Efficiency mode does their best to neglect this, it doesn’t help much in fixing the problem. However, there is a quick solution provided by the Sportmode. Pulling the gear stick down once more alerts and instructs the gearbox to hold the gears longer and give light blobs of throttle which leads to increased sense of cohesion between the driver and the vehicle.

Braking Safety

The wheels get disc brakes with the front ones being ventilated. The brakes in the car are sharp and predictable. And with electronic aids such as ABS with EBD and Brake Assist the driver has more control over the road. Further in the safety department, the new Audi S5 Sportsback features 8 airbags, traction control, tyre pressure monitoring system, electronic differential lock, anti-theft wheel bolts, rear camera with parking sensors and ISOFIX child mounting among others.
