Though India has not been a kind and ideal market for station wagons or estate cars but Audi has tried to play this game as safe as possible. While they are low profile cars but still give the hint of awesomeness as how practical and ideal they can be for a family. The German carmaker Audi launched the first Avant body styled estate car in the form of RS6 Avant in the year 2015. This was one of its kind vehicles in the market which was unaware of such cars. However, over the years, the car has been grabbing eyeballs, of course, of the elite class and looking at the response, the carmaker launched the latest version in 2018. The new Audi RS6 Avant Performance which is the range topping variant of the Avant model packs more power along with several exterior tweaks.
In terms of styling, looking from the front the aggressiveness is evident with the trapezoidal grille and the LED Matrix headlamps with LED daytime running lights nicely connected via a thin outline. The RS6 logo has been perfectly snuggled in the grille so the Quattro badge gracefully etched in. The front bumpers are sporty featuring gaping air intakes which also incorporates the fog lamps. The side profile as one would expect is extended with strong shoulders, wide wheel arches, contrast mirror paint and fabulous 20-inch alloy wheels. A sharp line flows along the length of the car and merges into the tail lights.
From the rear, the car looks absolutely charming with a neat overall profile. The vehicle incorporates tail lamps borrowed from A6 sedan and two large exhausts divided between a carbon fiber rear diffuser. Dimensionally, the car measures 4979mm in length, 2086mm in width, 1461mm in height while the wheelbase stands at 2915mm. The Audi A6 Avant is available in a number of solid, metallic, crystal paint, matt and pearl effect colour options. These include Panther Black crystal effect, Daytona Gray matt finish, Daytona Gray Pearlescent, Misano Red Pearlescent, Sepang Blue Pearlescent, Floret Silver metallic, Glacier White metallic, Mythos Black metallic and Nardo Grey.
Inside, the car is as luxurious as an Audi should be. The cabin is wrapped in all-black Alcantara with brushed aluminum accents on the knobs and buttons along with carbon inlays on the dashboard and the door pads. The interiors are understated which can be seen with the moderate fit and finish and the way buttons are placed. The 3-spoke flat bottomed steering wheel with mounted audio controls gives you a nice grip as well as liberty to steer the car (paddle shifters) and tune music in your own style. Then there is Audi’s signature MMI infotainment unit that slides into the dashboard beautifully when it’s not in use.
The decibels are either powered by Bose surround sound system which is standard while one can also opt for Bang & Olufsen Adanced Sound System which comes with 15 loudspeakers including the center speaker and subwoofer. The sporty seats are well contoured and can be electrically adjusted with memory function. Other comfort features include automatic climate control with air quality control, rear ac vents, rear trunk opener, glove box cooling, 60:40 rear seat split and rear parking camera with sensors among others.
In terms of specs, the car is powered by the same 4.0L V8 engine that also powers the RS7 Sportsback. The TFSI bi-turbo motor produces 560PS and 700Nm of torque coupled to 8-speed multitronic gearbox with Quattro all-wheel drive setup. The performance car can sprint from 0-100kmph in just 3.9 seconds of time reaching the top speed of 305kmph.
As far as safety is concerned, the car comes equipped with 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control, traction control, hill descent and hill assist function, tyre pressure monitoring system and Brake Assist. Other advanced safety technologies incorporated in the car include adaptive cruise control, active lane assist, Audi Pre-Sense plus and Attention Assist.
Audi RS6 falls in the category of high end performance cars so the pricing is set accordingly. The car is available in two variants namely RS6 Avant 4.0 TFSI and RS6 Avant 4.0 Quattro Performance both which are priced at Rs. 1.35 crore and Rs. 1.59 crore respectively.

If modest is the word you think is appropriate for this car, then you might be wrong. You get all the possible carbon fiber trim options available in this car, however, you can also choose the plain black version if you want to go fully surreptitious. But splashing it with bits of red would have added some more drama to the theme. There are also bits of Alcantara across the cabin which shows the sporty intentions of the carmaker. Overall, the quality and fit and finish in the car showcased is absolutely matchless. And the same can be seen in the sporty race-driven seats you get as you will find these one of the most comfortable as well as aggressive one you would have plumped down your butts in. They are wide and comfortable and have deep side bolstering.
Being an estate, there is plenty of space at the back for three to rest comfortably which is one of the main highlights of this car. In terms of boot space, the 565 liters of space is more than enough to carry huge luggage on your weekend trip. If you want to sleep like in a sleeper class train, then fold the rear seats and it will spare 1680 liters of space. The practicality is further evident with the presence of plenty of cubbyholes and storage spaces. The car is not mere a station wagon but an alpha male in the world of estate cars.
The car features a lot of luxuries that should be expected in such a car. It comes damn equipped with all you would require to have in a luxury car including MMI interface with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support as well as navigation. There is also a touch sensitive pad on which you can write your commands. The four-zone climate control along with rear air conditioning and electric seats makes the cabin really a comfortable place to be in.
The carmaker has given importance to minor details such as the boot cover which automatically retracts and shuts down after use. The flat-bottom steering wheel gives an awesome feeling while driving. Parking such a long vehicle can really be a pain for some, but it can be made convenient through Park Assist and rear parking camera. Other comfort aspects include multi-functional steering wheel, electrically adjustable ORVM, seat lumbar support, glove box cooling, engine start/stop button and ambient lighting.

The new Audi RS6 Avant is an understated vehicle especially that carries immense power underneath. Believe it or not but one of the major reasons why it is the head turner on the roads is the red shade. However, the stance that this car brings on the streets can let anyone imagine how much power this car packs under the hood. At the front, Audi signature matrix headlights with LED daytime running lights pose an aggressive look. The headlamps also removes the need of incorporating fog lamps separately which is why the carmaker has integrated huge air intakes bordered by carbon fiber accents on the bumper.
And if anyone driving ahead sees the honeycomb mesh grille with the bold Quattro logo and RS6 moniker on his mirror, he would surely make way for the Avant. Then there are sporty bumpers featuring carbon fiber vents along with the wide wheel arches and 20 inch wheels that certainly give it a tempting look. The rear profile is also chic and neat in appearance. The rear bumpers which contain the carbon diffuser and the dual exhaust pipes drew attention wherever the car goes.
The new Audi RS6 Avant is definitely a head turner in every sense. It also means that estate and station wagons need not look boring and dull.

Mileage Running Cost

The car houses the fuel saving engine that is loaded with cylinder on demand technology that shuts down one or all the cylinders during stable cruising. That said, the new Audi RS6 Avant can deliver 10.41kmpl which for some might still fall in the below average category. But rest assure during spirited driving don’t expect the car to deliver more than 5-6kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

Being an estate car, the car offers utter comfort when driven serenely. This is evident further as you drive the car in Comfort mode. However, there is a little stiffness in ride that is more noticeable when you set the car in Dynamic mode. Moreover, one should be careful enough of the low-profiled tyres with large 20-inch wheels since our road conditions would not be kind enough to them.
However, when it comes to driving, the car is playful and is not low as you might expect from such a car. The car does not wear away even on the most ludicrous speed bumps. As it’s a long vehicle compared to its siblings, for a first timer it would be quite troublesome to drive in city premises. But if you are used to a lengthy luxury car, it won’t be a problem. Also, don’t expect it to hug the corners like a full-fledged sports car. Lugging a 2-tonne estate car at corners will still show some under steering unless the Quattro AWD jumps into the scene and start rectifying your errors.

Engine Performance

Auto aficionados love to be pushed back into their seats while the wind knocks them out. And the new Audi RS6 Avant can do this with elegance. Underneath, rests the monster in the form 4.0L twin-turbo V8 that when waked up can muster the maximum power output of 568PS and earth shattering torque of 700Nm. The Performance variant takes this monstrosity a notch further with 45PS and 50Nm of extra torque. Just start the engine and the RS6 Avant is instantly alive with a loud burble making a wide smile on any auto enthusiast’s face.
It’s unbelievable that how awe-inspiring the engine and the exhaust note are with its perfectly timed sounds. The transmission is crispy and no lag even if you tug the paddle shifters on the steering. The car hardly feels any trickle over wet surfaces due to traction control and Quattro system working in harmony. It is one of the most forgiving performance cars that can face the challenge of any terrain you threw on it.
Then there is Dynamic and Sport mode available which changes the whole game with the tuned engine and super quick gearbox let this car go ballistic. The performance is so brutal and supercar-like that a 2-tonne estate car takes just 3.7 seconds of time to dash from 0-100kmph and is able to reach electronically limited top speed of 250kmph. Power is quite ready on tap and transcending from double to triple digit speed takes no time. The speed figures are relayed on to head-up display. Normally, the word performance and estate car doesn’t go well together, but the RS6 Avant definitely falls in the list of exceptions.

Braking Safety

Further, the ride and handling is complemented by giant ventilated cross drilled disc brakes in conjunction with huge calipers which makes this heavyweight to come to halt without any trouble. In fact, it does better than most of the vehicle running on roads today.
Last but not the least, to give the car full marks, the carmaker has equipped it with six airbags, anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, Brake Assist, traction control, stability control, tyre pressure monitoring system and hill assist and hill descent functionality. Then there are advanced techs such as adaptive cruise control, Audi Pre-sense plus, Attention Assist and active lane assist always ready to back the driver on the go.
