Audi RS5 comes from the category of cars which boasts of some serious power. The term RS refers to Racing Sport and are highly customized cars from the German auto giant. The performance vehicle is based on conventional sedans and therefore, also offers the comfort of everyday driving. Yet, the car is capable of unleashing enormous potential on just tapping the gas pedal. The last generation model was launched back in 2010. It was surely a beast in gentleman’s clothing but the new 2018 Audi RS5 sheds that gentleman outfit and dons an aggressive styling. The new generation Audi RS5 Coupe comes with a lot of exterior and interior changes along with tweaked engine.
Coming to the exteriors, the vehicle is now meaner and better looking than its counterparts such as Mercedes-AMG C63 S and BMW M4. Audi RS5 is the perfect sports car and is also the third in such body style from the Audi A5 family. The coupe combines sharp lines, boxy wheel and soft curves to get that ideal RS look. The car gets black treatment for the tail lamps and headlamps that provide it with aggressive looks. The car features extra air inlets on the front honeycomb grille which is now increased in width and thickness as compared to the standard A5 Coupe. The all-LED Matrix headlamp which has been part of many Audi cars also makes way in the new RS5. The side profile boasts of 19-inch 10-spoke forged aluminum alloy wheels while there are optional 20-inch chromed alloy wheels which looks incredible.
At the rear, the car has been given LED tail lights with dynamic turn indicators. Further, there is accentuated diffuser housing two tail pipes. The carmaker is also offering optional matte aluminum and carbon exterior package that if chosen can make this car a real head turner. Dimensions of the car has also been changed with the vehicle now measuring 4723mm in length, 2029mm in width, 1358mm in height and wheelbase at 2766mm. The car is available in 8 different colour options including Nardo Grey solid, Glacier White metallic, Mythos Black metallic, Floret Silver metallic, Misano Red pearl effect, Navarra Blue metallic, Daytona Red pearl effect and Sonoma Green metallic.
On the lines of exteriors, the interiors have also been revamped thoroughly. It feels more like sibling A5 and A6, however, it has unique elements of its own. It’s the premium car so it do have majority of techs and goodies with topnotch quality. The dashboard now features Alcantara upholstery and three-spoke flat bottom steering wheel. The doors are splashed with aluminum/anthracite inlays while the Nappa leather covered seats can be electrically adjustable. The seats also offer lumbar support as well as massage function. There is also ambient lightning option and illuminated door sills for more rich feel. The front seats are thicker and well bolstered while the dials of the Virtual Cockpit are racier as seen in the S5 Sportsback. Besides, the MMI infotainment system of the car has also been updated while the three-zone air conditioning makes sitting inside a more comfortable experience.
As far as safety is concerned, the car comes equipped with 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stabilization control, electronic differential lock, brake assist, traction control, hill assist, hill descent control, tyre pressure monitor, automatic headlamps and rear parking camera with sensors. Advance safety aspects include Park Assist with Parking Aid Plus, Regenerative Braking system, Audi Connect Care Assistance and Security Services, Audi Side Assist and Audi Pre Sense Basic, Rear Cross traffic and Vehicle Exit Assist among others.
In terms of specifications, the new 2.9L bi-turbo V6 engine is a pure devil which produces 450PS and 600Nm of max torque. The powertrain is coupled to 8-speed Tiptronic transmission with Quattro AWD on board. With the powerful combination, the Audi RS5 takes just 3.9 seconds to reach the 100kmph from nil, attaining the top speed of 250kmph. The carmaker claims that the vehicle can deliver 10.8kmpl if you don’t drive it like crazy.
With the powerful engine under the hood and imported into the country via CBU route, don’t expect it to be a reasonable affair. The new Audi RS5 has been tagged at Rs. 1.11 crore, ex-showroom. The performance saloon takes on Mercedes Benz AMG E63 S and BMW M4 in the segment.


Most of us might be in doubt that is the car comfortable since it is made for burning the rubber? Yes, indeed the car is a proper grand tourer. The interiors are adorned in Alcantara and leather and though there are no traits of carbon fibre, yet the car looks unusually refreshing. Stepping inside instantly reveals that the vehicle prefers open roads instead run-off zones.
The front passengers get huge legroom and headroom, enough for the tallest of occupants to fit in comfortably. The width is also not a problem as there is 1400mm is shoulder room available at the front. Further, the passengers get plenty of adjustable stuff including front bucket seats with adjustable wings, squabs for the driver and the co-passenger, all which helps find the perfect seating position. The comfort levels of this high end sedans is further evident with the seats getting massage functionality with different formats along with three level of intensity for the front passengers. The massage features can be operated through lumbar adjustment system.
Since it’s a coupe, the rear is not much spacious however, it’s not cramped either. Two average size adults can sit comfortably and at 900mm, the headroom is quite adequate. However, the seat squabs do not offer desired under-thigh support which can make long journeys a bit uncomfortable. Though, children would be quite pleased with the overall setup. The MMI infotainment system is right in place like all other Audis out there. The system is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay so that connectivity with the smartphone and features including Bluetooth, internal data storage and vehicle settings give you immense control over the car. For added convenience, the system is loaded with Navigation Plus for assisting you on locations during the journey.
The Virtual Cockpit is just outstanding to look at it. The customizable smart system let you view the information in your style and without distraction from the road. The high resolution 31.2cm LCD display comes with ‘classic’ and ‘infotainment’ view for getting desired information. The prominent speedometer and the rev counter can be viewed in the ‘classic’ view while the media and navigation map can be viewed in ‘infotainment’ view. Everything is displayed in a beautiful 3D graphics with high detailed effects. Another intuitive feature is the Park Assist which let your car automate parking woes. Overall, the interiors are refined and well sorted than the earlier model.


About looks! If we define in one word, it’s a real head-turner, especially in the graceful red colour. Almost everyone on the road will give the car a second look. It seems the carmaker has worked a lot on the style factor and to give it a unique appeal. This is a great improvement over the earlier model which was like an add-on job. And what makes this car a head-turner is the inherent grace, which is at best in its coupe style.
At upfront, there is huge hexagonal glossy-black grille and the black headlamp with little grooves on its looks awesome. The long bonnet with solid creases makes it a muscular car. The apron of the car is edgier while the haunches are more robust. The wheel arch extensions emphasize the nuance shape of the coupe. Then there are eye-catching 20-inch alloys which though optional, looks absolutely gorgeous on the move.
At the rear, taillights are designed for better aero performance, the tailgate is right on its position. The chunky diffuser and the lip spoiler create a wonderful contrast with the red body colour. Overall, one of the main mottos behind buying this car is that you want the people to notice it. And in this department, the vehicle will never disappoint.

Mileage Running Cost

When it comes to a sports car, talking about mileage and that too with the fuel-thirsty V6 engine hardly makes sense. The carmaker claims that the car is able to deliver 11.05kmpl but the real world mileage would be under 7kmpl which could be abysmal to many, especially, when the fuel tank capacity is just 58 liters. That means if you are taking a Jaipur-Delhi tour, you have to top-up the tank while returning.

Comfort Suspension

The suspension set-up in the car is perfectly balanced, neither too stiff nor too soft. This provides nimble ride quality in city premises. Even on the bumpy roads the car doesn’t feel out of character. The suspension can absorb almost all road undulations with negligible trouble despite running on 20-inch wheels. The ground clearance per se is adequate with the large speed breakers posing minimal threat, though one should be careful while crossing over them.
On the open roads, the RS5 is absolutely fun to drive without an iota of doubt. The flat-bottom steering wheel gives a nice grip and is direct and responsive. The cornering ability of the car is fantastic and offers you plenty of space to apply brakes and rectify your error.

Engine Performance

The earlier RS5 featured a devilish engine sound of which felt like a firing machine gun. The new engine seems to be more civilized, thanks to the significant downsizing. Yes, it’s now V6 not the V8. The powertrain is the 2.9L twin-turbo unit that produces the same 450PS but the eye-watering 8250rpm mark has been diluted to 6700rpm. However, the torque has seen significant improvement over the earlier model as the new engine produces 600Nm compared to the 430Nm of the previous version. And the most amount of torque is available in the 1900-5000rpm range as against 4000-6000rpm in the earlier one.
The engine is coupled to the conventional 8-speed automatic with torque converter functionality. The ZF transmission is fast and intuitive at the same time. And what’s make it more interesting is the link to the Quattro AWD system which makes the torque supply smoother. The performance is indeed ballistic, the moment you put your feet onto the accelerator, the engine gives immediate response. You don’t have to wait for the rev build-up, the power delivery is instant. The acceleration is so brutal that as soon as the tachometer pushes beyond 2000rpm, it feels that the car has been released from a catapult.
The vehicle comes with variety of modes including Comfort, Dynamic and Individual. In the comfort mode, there is no urgency in throttle response and the gear changes are also not aggressive. In the Dynamic mode, the powertrain shows its true colour with the razor-sharp and snappy throttle input. The steering is sharper while the gear changes are also instantaneous. The individual mode gives you the liberty of setting your own parameters except the suspension setup. The car is lightning fast in the Dynamic mode as 0-100kmph dash is just a matter of 4.2 seconds. But the people who are fond of the engine sound, they would be little disappointed as it is nowhere as regal as the earlier V8 RS5. However, the sound does feel sporty with a good bass.

Braking Safety

The brakes are progressive and the bite is so forceful that the ventilated disc brings calm down this monster from 100kmph in mere 2.65 seconds. Further, the braking aspect is boosted through electronic aids such as ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Regenerative Braking and Electronic Differential Lock.
Safety is topnotch as the vehicle is covered by 6 airbags, hill assist and hill descent control, automatic headlamps, tyre pressure monitoring system and rear parking camera. Then there are advanced features such as Audi Connect Care Assistance, Park Assist with Parking Aid Plus, Rear Cross traffic and Vehicle Exit Assist, and Audi Side Assist and Audi Pre Sense Basic, all which makes the car a unique preposition in its class.
