Overview

The Audi Q3 marks as the gateway for the German carmakers in the SUV line up in the country. It is also among the highest selling models for the Ingolstadt based manufacturer in the subcontinent. The Audi Q3 is mainly designed for the young and enthusiastic customers and priced very sensibly. Audi Q3 SUV gets the stylish exteriors and is highlighted with smooth headlamps and fitted body shell. The all-new 2017 Audi Q3 is crafted with minute athletic details to show the company’s excellence of merging the sportiness and beauty together. The vehicle was first brought into the subcontinent back in the year 2012, following the company provided the mid-life facelift in 2015 and now again in the year 2017 it get subtle update inside and out. The new 2017 Audi Q3 gets new features as well as a new engine to keep the customers pampered.
Talking about the exteriors, the changes in the new 2017 Audi Q3 includes restyled bumper underlining the character of the vehicle, thanks to the sharper lines and shape it gets. The new and updated air inlets at the front bumper provide the car a rugged and aggressive look. The panoramic sunroof is the feature which is now standard in the entire line-up. It runs on the 17-inch wheels along with the other standard features like LED DRLs and LED headlights. Dimensionally, the car now measures 4385mm in length, 1831mm in width, 1608mm in height while the wheelbase stands at 2603mm. Audi Q3 is available in different shades such as Floret Silver, Mythos Black, Cortina White, Misano Red and Hainan Blue.
The interiors of the Audi Q3 is plush and attractive, the design of the dashboard is quite simple. It gets the waterfall centre console with the display screen for the infotainment unit which is operated via the fob or the steering mounted controls. No major changes have been provided to the cabin, except a few tweaks here and there. Audi Q3 carries the same upholstery which is leatherette with the same MMI unit without the support of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The cabin now comes with front seat with electronic adjustment while the Deluxe 2 Zone automatic air conditioner is now standard in the vehicle. The car now gets aluminium inserts instead of wood while the range topping model features dual-tone beige and black interiors, reverse camera and paddle shifters. Other comfort factors include panoramic sunroof and electrically adjustable seats.
Under the hood, Audi Q3 is powered by the 1.4L petrol mill that can generate the power output of 150PS and yields the maximum torque of 200Nm. The engine comes mated to 6-speed automatic gearbox. It’s another oil burner is the 2.0L diesel engine with 2 states of tunes, generating 150PS and 183PS of power and can produce peak torque of 340Nm and 380Nm respectively. The powertrain comes mated to 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The power is transmitted through Quattro 4WD system.
As per the safety of its passengers, Audi Q3 comes loaded with numerous aspects such as 6 airbags, Anti-lock braking system, Electronic Brake-force distribution, Electronic Stability Programme, Traction Control and Hill Decent Control. Other safety features include Electronic Differential Lock, Electromechanical Parking Brake, seat belt reminder, side-on collision protection and 3-point inertia-reel seat belts.
Audi Q3 is available in three different variants in the country: Premium, Premium Plus and Technology. As far as the pricing is concerned, its base trim Premium is available at the price tag of Rs. 34.73 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 36.53 lakh for the diesel variant. Its premium plus model is tagged at Rs. 39.68 lakh while the top-of the line trim technology is offered at the price tag of Rs. 42.88 lakh, ex-showroom. Audi Q3 Design Edition 35 TDI Quattro is tagged at Rs. 40.76 lakh. The vehicle competes against similar stalwarts in the segment including BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Mini Countryman.

Interior

Principally, the cabin of the new model remain unchanged since the introduction of the car in the year 2012. The interiors are welcoming and the contemporary design is spot on the moment you step in. The vehicle’s traditional dashboard looks cluttered despite the fact that everything today is controlled via touchscreens. Another down for this update is that the rotary knob of the dual-zone climate control and the small multi-information screen squeezed between the speedometer and tachometer now looks inferior in quality.
Moreover, if we compare it to the sibling A4’s virtual cockpit and touch-sensitive automatic climate control interface, we will realize that this car is definitely generations behind. But the compact SUV is thoroughly practical. And this can be seen in the standard electrically adjustable seats which provides reach and height modification for different individuals and the tilt-telescopic functionality of the steering, both making the driver come into a comfortable driving position. Further, all the doors can now hold sizable bottle while the boot space has been increased to 420 litres.
Coming to the seating, the rear seats are not as roomy as we expect in a SUV of this stature, best for 4 full-sized adults. This might be because of the high transmission tunnel running through the spine of the surface which taking up middle passenger’s legroom and rear air-conditioning eating significant amount of knee room. But if you use this car as a 4-seater, it will not leave room for complaints. The large panoramic sunroof does add a sense of airiness to the cabin space. Again in terms practicality and ergonomics, everything seems to be right in place, the build quality is fantastic and there is enough space for 4 passengers with their luggage.
The duty of entertainment and information has been shouldered on Audi’s MMI Navigation High system, which is coupled to 180 Watt 10-speakers setup. The 6.5 inch screen which is sadly not a touchscreen can be controlled by dials and buttons located on the centre console. But the good thing is that it can be operated without taking eyes off the road. That said, the graphics are not that crispy and the interface seems to be quite dated. And surprisingly, a Rs. 40 lakhs car doesn’t have Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support as well as no USB port. This lead to the only option of Bluetooth through which you can pair your smartphone for calls and music streaming and you also have to rely on the car’s own navigation system. However, the infotainment does have inbuilt 20GB hard-drive to store songs.

Exterior

For a naïve, it’s close to impossible to spot the visual difference between the latest and the 2015 version. But there are just two major changes on the outside. First is the revised front bumper with the faux air-inlet slightly bigger than before. Secondly, the additional cladding gives the car a typical SUV look. Almost everything else remains ditto to the previous version. The all-LED headlights look smooth as always with the daytime running lights grabbing your attention instantly. The front features a black hexagonal grille surrounded by matte silver beautifully connecting to the headlamps.
The side profile continues to sport the 10-spoke alloy wheels with the same dynamic stance. The car seamlessly blends the SUV stance with a coupe-like structure. What’s cool at the derriere are the turn indicators that blink sequentially in the direction of the turn. The LED taillights go well with the tailgate while the profound tailpipes look quite similar to Yeti. Overall, there are subtle changes when it comes to aesthetics but the car remains unmistakably Audi.
It might not have the same flair as of Mercedes Benz GLA Class as of now, but the crisp lines and the upright stance is unquestionably impressive. In simple words, it seems Q3 looks more like a scaled-down Sports Utility Vehicle rather than a blown-up hatch.

Mileage Running Cost

The carmaker has applied a number of technologies such as power-saving alternator, start/stop system and regenerative braking for bettering fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The efficiency can also be capitalized by switching into the ‘Efficiency’ mode which dulls the throttle input a bit.
The diesel Audi is available in both FWD and Quattro system which makes a big difference in term of fuel economy. Where the FWD variant delivers ARAI certified 18.51kmpl, the Quattro AWD drive returns 15.17kmpl. The petrol powered Q3 is also fuel efficient as it can deliver 16.9kmpl.

Comfort Suspension

The ride quality will give no reasons for complain, especially driving within the city premises. The suspension set-up of the car skilfully lay off road bumps and other undulations with a soft thud. And more importantly, the cabin doesn’t feel uneasiness while addressing the potholes. But what is not good is the noise of the tyres which peeps into the cabin, slightly disrupting the in-cabin experience.
There is a bit of unfairness on part of the suspension when you touch the triple digit speed. The cabin feels a little floaty and some sort of vertical jogging. The steering also gives light and lacklustre feeling as though it is set-up for convenience driving, not for fun-driving. And that’s apparent in the city driving when it feels super-light which makes the manoeuvring a cakewalk. Also, the car won’t disappoint the passengers while cornering.

Engine Performance

The carmaker is offering a new engine with the SUV and i.e. the 1.4L turbocharged petrol mill that has been a part of many other Volkswagen-Audi cars. The powertrain produces 150PS and 250Nm of max torque, the same output it gives in the A3 and A4 sedans. Talking about the performance, push the engine start/stop button and the noise levels are a little higher contrary to the expectations and continues to be audible when the car moves on. However, if you are driving in the mid-range, the car is convenient to potter around the city.
The turbopower is more than enough to carry the 2-tonne SUV and it doesn’t come until you press the accelerator pedal hard. For most of the overtaking part, a gentle throttle input is more than enough to pass over. There are four different driving modes available in the Drive Select namely ‘Efficiency’, ‘Comfort’, ‘Dynamic’ and ‘Auto’ made for different driving conditions. Auto mode works fine in most everyday driving conditions while in the Dynamic mode the car seems to be enthusiastic to lunge ahead. Comfort tunes the suspension setting a bit to offer better riding experience.
The S-tronic transmission is really a gem of the overall package. The 6-speed automatic dual-clutch gearbox is swift in responding to the throttle inputs. Unlike the diesel Q3, the petrol variant does not feature paddle shifters. However, it won’t be missed much as the gearbox is able to read your mind.
Coming to the diesel version, the engine comes in two state of tunes viz 150PS/340Nm and 183PS/380Nm. The power is transferred to the wheels via Quattro AWD system. The engine now comes with increased power output of 7PS and additional 130Nm of torque. Though the increased power is not noticeable, the added torque shows its true colour on the highways. Power delivery is excellent and there is no turbo lag that would make you stuck in the traffic. The sound is unusually likeable but it can be muffled through moderate music volume. The diesel engine is substantially silent which will surely work in the car’s favour.

Braking Safety

The Audi Q3 comes equipped with all-disc brakes with tech like ABS with EBD and emergency brake assist system. The pedal is also well calibrated. As a result, you get strong performance from the SUV while simultaneously maintaining composure under hard braking conditions.
Further, the safety is boosted through 6-airbags, electronic stability program, traction control, hill descent control as well as rear parking camera with sensors. The car also provides side-on collision protection, Integrated head restraint system and Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) as part of the overall safety package.
