Audi A8 is an exceptional vehicle beautifully expressed in a visual form. The sedan is a quintessential of luxury and opulence for which the German carmaker is known for. The Audi A8L sits on the top of the brand’s India portfolio and is the one which is aggressively competing against the formidable sedans of the class including BMW 7-series and Mercedes Benz S Class. The car is not manufactured but imported as completely build unit and then assembled here. The latest version of the car was launched in 2014 with crucial changes inside out with new engine options. The carmaker is also planning to launch the updated model soon which packs thoroughly revised exteriors, luxury and futuristic interiors with new engine options, perhaps armed with some mild hybrid capabilities. This is also because the highly opulent Mercedes S-Class is garnering appraises from all quarters. So introduction of an upgraded model has become indispensable.
Talking about the present Audi A8L in India, over the years the carmaker has playing around with the headlamps and the top of the line Audi A8 is no exception. The Matrix LED headlamps are the most prominent change at the front. The high beam headlights consist of 25 individual LEDs that can be switched on and off. Among their other jobs, the most important one is to blank off individual LEDs on the face of the oncoming vehicle in order to prevent the approaching driver from dazzling. While at the same time, it continues to brighten up ahead of the road with full beam. All this is done via the information it gets from sensors an onboard camera.
The single frame radiator grille is slightly revised while what’s more impressive is the revamped bonnet which now features prominent creases, making the car looks more muscular when viewed from the front. The side profile of the car remains intact save the fact that the car has now grown up by 13mm in length. The profile is dominated by a strong shoulder line and a long bonnet. At the rear end, the car gets new boot lid, revised tail lamps, crispier bumper along with trapezoidal exhaust tips. Dimensionally, the car measures 5265mm in length, 2111mm in width, 1471mm in height while the wheelbase which gives yacht like comfort inside stands at 3122mm. The Audi A8 is available in exclusive paint with pearl and metallic finishes including Sand beige/pearl effect, Palace Blue/pearl effect, Ipanema Brown/metallic, Classic Red/pearl effect, Saddle Brown/pearl effect and Mamba Black/metallic. The carmaker also offers 100 customization options for exterior colours.
Inside, the cabin has been bestowed with Alcantara, aluminum and wooden trim that goes well with company’s signature red/white lighting scheme. The A8 interiors do appear to be a blend of luxury yacht and business jet. The styling is a more avant garde than the conventional luxury cars. There are tons of customization options for making the car more premium. These include 23 interior colour options with 12 unique wood inserts. Everything inside works at a high degree of accuracy right from the way screen goes into the central console, the styling of the glovebox drop opening and the front passenger seats tossing forward to give more legroom to the rear passenger.
The car’s MMI controls majority of the functions inside but the plethora of buttons and switches can be used varying purposes as well. From entertainment to information, engine and gearbox setting and adjusting seats can be controlled through MMI. Even the seatbelts can be adjusted through the same MMI. There are other natty features such as night vision camera, engine start/stop button, massaging seats, park assist, head-up display, automatic climate control, air quality control, panoramic sunglass, seat lumbar support and digital clock among others.
In terms of specifications, the new Audi boast of new range of fuel efficient engine options. The car is offered in the 3.0L V6 ultra refined TDI diesel engine which makes 250PS and 580Nm of max torque. The luxury sedan is also available with the more powerful 4.0L TFSI petrol engine 420PS and 600Nm of max torque. Both the engines are offered with 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission for seamlessly swapping the ratios.
As far as safety is concerned, the car is loaded with 8 airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, traction control, vehicle stability control system and tyre pressure monitoring system. The car has been built around Audi Space Frame aluminum body that provides high degree of rigidity. The Audi A8 Security which is an armored variant features ballistics protection which means that the car can provide VR9 level of security to the passengers. For enhancing the occupant protection level, the carmaker has used materials such as special alloys, aramide fabric and hot formed steel armour. Moreover, there is a range of safety tech including intercom for outside communication with speaker mounted behind the grille, fire extinguishing system, emergency exit system and remote engine start, etc.
In terms of pricing, the Audi A8L diesel starts at Rs. 1.09 crore and top of the range is tagged at Rs. 1.33 crore. The petrol version starts Rs. 1.38 crore while the W12 quattro is priced at Rs. 1.87 crore. The Audi A8L Security is available at a whopping Rs. 9.15 crore, ex-showroom. Audi A8 competes against behemoths such as Mercedes Benz S-Class and BMW 7-series in the segment.

The quality and comfort level of the cabin is the biggest attraction of this car, making it one of the top-selling vehicles in its segment. The carmaker has upped the fit and finish of the cabin a notch further. Audi’s benchmark craftsmanship can be seen in the fine blend of Alcantara, matt wood and aluminium. Besides, the matt brown wood inlays and the classic cream and brown perforated leather upholstery take the quality to the whole new level. The parts of the cabin including seat headlining, dashboard and door panels and the center console are practically wrapped in finest leather. Complimenting that richness is the leather wrapped steering wheel which has tons of controls mounted.
One of the biggest attractions of the vehicle is the Audi’s MMI infotainment system which beautifully slides in and out of the center console. The cabin quality may not be as elegant as of Mercedes Benz S-Class, but the fit and finish will leave no room for complaints either. The analogue clock placed at the center of the dash adds a bit of sophistication to the modern cabin design. Moreover, the plenty of personalization options in terms of fabric and design makes the car a fine place to be in. The MMI has a clear layout and stylish design with almost everything related to comfort, entertainment and mechanics can be controlled with the device. Whether its phone synchronization, navigation and changing music, altering headlights, steering, suspension and gearbox or even the seatbelts, the Multi-Media Interface is a powerful tool in the hands of the front passengers.
Talking about the rear comfort, the passengers are also given a control panel to access the MMI, panoramic sunroof, sun blinds, music and almost everything possible feature with a touch of a button. The seats are huge and well bolstered, while the headroom and legroom are excellent despite of small wheelbase. But one can take this comfort to a whole new level by opting for the Rear Executive seating package. Touch a button and front passenger seat will flip forward (without passenger) and a footrest pops for the passenger to stretch his legs. There is a separate massage function for the rear passengers as well as personal writing table and a fridge. Here the message from the German carmaker seems to be clear i.e. fly in the first class comfort everyday.
The endless list of equipment and features also include Bang & Olfsen surround sound system, automatic parking, night vision camera, head-up display, engine start/stop button and automatic climate control with air quality control system. Apart from these, there are plenty of small and neat storage bins for dumping stuffs. With such a strong focus on passenger comfort, Audi has really played safe with this car.

The design changes in the revised Audi A8 are delicate. The most prominent alteration comes in the form of new LED headlamps and optional Matrix LED headlights. In recent years, the German carmaker has been very innovative when it comes to playing around with headlights. If you choose the Matrix LED setup than you gets each headlight cluster incorporating 25 individual LED units. These diodes are connected to the camera, navigation and sensors which record the data and decide when to turn these LEDs on and off to avoid dazzling the approaching vehicles or pedestrians.
What makes it special for the countries like India is that the headlights still keep the surrounding area of the object illuminated, hence giving clear visibility of the rest of the road. In international models, the system also utilizes information from the satellite navigation to anticipate a turn and therefore, the corner angle then adjust the focus of the headlights. Besides the LED headlights, the changes at the front include revised bumper with revamped air intakes and a more protruding hood. The side profile is flanked by strong shoulder line while the 18-inch forged aluminum wheels not only looks awesome while moving but also improves driving dynamics.
The rear profile also gets a handsome makeover. The bootlid is all new while the LED taillights have also been tweaked. Another interesting addition is the dynamic turn indicators which have been lifted from Audi R8. These indicators instead of blinking, stream outwards in the direction of the turn which looks pretty cool. Apart from this, the bumper has also been revised along with trapezoidal exhaust. The engineers at Audi have managed to preserve the confident panache of the car while simultaneously giving a right dose contemporary touch to keep the interest of the elite buyers intact.

Mileage Running Cost

The engines in the Audi A8L have been improved to give better performance. And it is well reflected with the figures as the diesel engine delivers 16.77kmpl, the petrol engine on the other hand, returns 16.39kmpl and 11.49kmpl in the TFSI Quattro and W12 Quattro variant respectively.

Comfort Suspension

Irrespective of the petrol and diesel powered A8 you drive, the common characteristic between the two is the unmatched refinement. Hardly, any noise filters into the cabin. Moreover, the standard adaptive suspension setup in the car gives a more settled ride. It does an excellent job of absorbing road undulations only severe road ripples breaks into the cabin.
The low speed ride of this car is simply next to brilliant, thanks to the tweaked suspension setup. If you are driving in the ‘Comfort’ mode, small potholes seem to be non-existent. The high profile tyres in conjunction with the 18 inch wheels and air suspension really take off the severities from the roads. The car is outstanding at tackling corners while it feels safe and confident at high speeds.

Engine Performance

The new range of engines in the car promises of more power and efficiency to the owner. The 3.0L TDI V6 diesel engine with common rail injection system and turbocharging technology pumps out 250PS and 580Nm of torque. The capable engine was never slow so the excess 8PS output will be hardly felt while driving. Even if the tachometer touches the red line, the engine remains surprisingly silent, except a gentle whine of exhaust note.
The power delivery is linear and silky smooth. Just push the throttle and the A8 pounces elegantly and you feel the delicate power surge without any growling motor and drama. You just get plenty of torque with the smooth mid-range pushing you to the distance in flat mode and free from any jerks. The 8-speed Tiptronic transmission switches the ratios flawlessly to make sure the 2 ton saloon just sails through 200kmph mark effortlessly. Though the 0-100kmph sprint time has been slightly slowed due to aluminum body, the efficiency has been improved, as claimed by the carmaker.
The petrol engine is the powerful 4.0L TFSI V8 Bi-turbo unit that musters 420PS and earth shattering torque of 600Nm. With 8-speed automatic gearbox, it takes just 4.6 seconds for this car to touch the 0-100kmph milestone. As goes with the petrol powertrains, this one is copious in terms of power and torque delivery while the transmission aids in rapid shifting.

Braking Safety

In terms of braking, the stopping power of this car is more than adequate with plenty of bite to halt this 2 ton aluminum bodied machine within fractions of seconds. Further, the all-round safety is covered by 8 airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, vehicle stability control, traction control and tyre pressure monitoring system.
Moreover, the fully armored Security variant has been further strengthened with VR9 level of security which comprehensively covers the car from all angles. This comes from the Audi Space Frame aluminum structure that offers high level of support. Further, the passenger’s protection level is enhanced with materials such as aramide fabric, special alloys and hot formed steel armour.
Then there are safety techs such as intercom for outside communication with speaker placed behind the grille, emergency exit system, fire extinguishing system, emergency fresh air system, selective door lock/unlock and remote engine start, all providing all-round protection to the occupants.
