The Audi A4 – a car that has been around for four decades and has seen over 10 million units worldwide is also a best-seller for the brand in the Indian market. It has been the cheapest model to wear the four oval rings (The Q3 might change that soon) and unlike a particular rival, doesn’t compromise on key factors like comfort and space – more this later though. So, pushing the envelope further and raising the bar in the segment, the new upgraded A4 was revealed to the Indian public on the 3rd May 2012.
The overall design remains pretty much the same though for slight tweaks in the headlamps, tail lamps and both bumpers. The engine hood is more arched, the upper corners of the single frame grille are tapered, and the cross ribs and the Audi rings are highlighted three-dimensionally. The new LED treatment looks fab and the A4 carries over numerous goodies from the A6 and the A8.
This car has been about comfort and luxury till date and the new version with an extended wheelbase gives it the best in class rear leg room too. Audi offers a whole kit of state-of-the-art infotainment systems for its A4 series. The MMI navigation plus system now features four instead of eight buttons, with a script function integrated in the volume control dial. Other improvements concern operation of the automatic transmission, the efficient air conditioning systems, Audi drive select and the multifunction steering wheel.
The Audi A4 is available with two engines. The A4 2.0 TDi develops 143 bhp and is smooth and quite powerful with good torque .A new highlight of the TFSI family is the new 1.8-liter engine, available for the Sedan. The four-cylinder engine delivers sporty thrust, with a power output of 170 hp and 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) of torque. This 143Bhp 2.0 TDI engine has seen tweaks and now offers 16.55kmpl as per ARAI tests, making it the most fuel efficient in its class. Now thats the real joy of having both performance and efficiency on your hands. The 1.8 TFSI motor comes with 170 horses (and 15.6kmpl ARAI rating!)
The chassis of the Audi A4 is striking with its sporty precision, high ride comfort and superior safety. The mounts of the rear suspension control arms and the characteristics of the shock absorbers have been even more finely tuned. Most of the components of the five-link front suspension and the trapezoidal-link rear suspension are made of aluminum. All front-wheel-drive versions of the Audi A4 feature the electronic stabilization program (ESP) with electronic limited slip differential.
