Audi A4 is the sedan that combines technology and aesthetics to provide the most refined experience to the buyers. The vehicle has propelled into a new generation and has become more advanced. This time Audi A4 has received a plethora of changes that make the vehicle a much better product. The fight between the Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and BMW 3 Series has chronicled over the passing time. Mercedes and BMW have already updated their cars for better sales, its Audi’s turn now to bring the A4 at par with the competition. The car was launched back in April 2017 with a new diesel engine which is now more powerful and fuel efficient than the earlier one.
On the outside, Audi A4 is built on the Volkswagen’s MLB platform and is much lighter as compared to its outgoing model. In terms of dimensions as well, the new car is now longer, wider and sits on the longer wheelbase for better inner space. It now measures 4726mm in length, 1842mm in breadth, 1427mm in height and the wheelbase stands at 2820mm. The vehicle has the addition of new styling elements on the outside that provides the car with improved looks. The front features a single-frame radiator grille flanked by the angular matrix LED headlamps. The side profile gets sculpture character lines and the new 17-inch alloy wheels. At the back, Audi A4 features LED tail lamps and large body coloured bumper. Available colours for Audi A4 are Mythos Black, Moonshine Blue, Tango Red Metallic, Florest Silver Metallic, Moonshine Blue Metallic and Ibis White.
As we have mentioned above, the wheelbase of the sedan has been increased by 12mm and that directly infers better cabin room for the passengers. New Audi A4 certainly impresses us more from the inside, its dashboard is all-new and follows the similar slab outline as the Q7. Audi has provided the new A4 with the nice central tunnel design while the steering wheel is also new with numerous buttons to operate the audio and telephony. As per the gadgetry, there are three screens: the super cool 12.3-inch virtual cockpit, a slim display for the automatic climate control and the central 7.0-inch MMI display unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The car also gets 755-watt Bang and Olufsen 3D audio system and 19 speakers. Other features included are cruise control, rear parking camera, height adjustable driver’s seat, keyless entry, push start /stop button and lumbar support.
Audi A4 is available in both diesel and petrol engine options. This time the company has ditched the older 1.8L diesel and introduced the new 1.4L diesel mill. The diesel powertrain is capable of generating the power output of 150bhp and the maximum torque of 250Nm. The 2.0L petrol oil burner, on the other hand, can churn the power output of 188bhp and generate the peak torque of 400Nm. Both the powertrains come mated to 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. The mileage figure for the diesel variant is 18.25kmpl and for the petrol is 17.84kmpl.
As per the safety of its occupants, Audi A4 comes with array an array of aspects such as 8 airbags, ABS, Brake Assist, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Traction Control, Engine Immobilizer, Child Safety lock, Hill Assist, Electronic Stability program, power door lock and automatic headlamps.
Audi A4 is available in two variants they are Premium Plus and Technology. Checking the pricing details, Audi A4 premium Plus petrol is tagged at Rs. 41.47 lakh while premium Plus diesel is available at the price tag of Rs. 43.37 lakh. The Technology variant is offered at the price tag of Rs. 45.05 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 46.94 lakh (ex-showroom) for the diesel one.
Audi A4 currently locks horns with BMW 3 Series, Mercedes Benz C-Class, Volvo S60 and Jaguar XE in the segment.

The cabin is a lot more different from the previous model. In fact, the design of the dashboard is reminiscent of the new Q7 SUV. The carmaker has focused the design for a more driver-centric approach. And this can be seen in the new smart and sharp 12.3-inch MID display that has ditched the conventional looking dials. The instrument cluster now sports a large speedometer and tachometer imparting a plethora of information. The driver can also switch views to get information such as tank range, average efficiency besides music and navigation maps. All these amenities would prevent the driver from distraction.
Coming to the design and built quality, the dashboard features wooden screen running across the length. The ac vents sits just above the wooden dashboard panel and looks like running end to end with the dashboard. And once again, the traits of the Q7 are evident. The 7 inch infotainment system at the centre is fixed though it looks like a pop-up unit offered in many other Audi cars. The cabin of the new A4 also features state-of-the- art MMI which is now loaded with more features. The controls are fresher and the unit is slick to operate. Then there is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for easing out your job of music and phone calls on the go.
For more convenience, the front armrest has been bestowed with 2 USB slots, Aux-in ports, SC card slots as well as a SIM card slot. So, there is no dearth of connectivity be it music, handling phone calls, WiFi or the internet. This is not the end, the same front armrest also contains wireless phone charging dock so your devices are never out of juice. Buttons and switches look elegant and are also touch sensitive. This means unless you have the intention of changing the setting of the AC, a mere touch on the panel can give you the needed information. The yatch-like drive mode selector seems to be lifted from A8 which does add to the premium feel.
In terms of seating, the carmaker has provided a wide range of seat adjustments with both driver and passenger side getting full set of controls. The seats are upholstered in leather or pashmina beige. The increase in the dimensions has translated into increased passenger comfort. There is a generous amount of comfort not only on the front but the legroom and headroom at the rear are astonishingly good. Other luxurious highlights of the car include glass sunroof, triple-zone climate control, electrically foldable ORVM and engine start/stop button among others.

The German automaker is known for its radical design alteration across generations. The newer model though looks quite identical to the previous one, yet has a sense of freshness a new generation model should have. It might not look fresh and exciting to many but the superb proportion and neat sculpted body will not let distract opinions. From the front, the sedan looks wider, thanks to the broader hexagonal grille while the headlamps are sharper, slimmer and more aggressive with a nice kink at the bottom. The design of the LED DRLs is different with two separate lines arranged in the form of 7 looks really cool.
The bonnet looks more muscular than before lending a sporty stance when viewed from the front. The 17-inch alloy wheels not only look pleasant on the move but also provide an extra layer of cushioning. The uniquely patterned ORVMs are directly mounted on the door while adding to the character is a sharp crease running on the shoulders. However, the overall silhouette of the car is identical to the previous model.
At the rear, there is sense of newness with the new LED tail lamps and slightly pronounced lip on the top of the trunk lid. The tail lamps also get integrated dynamic turn indicators which by swiping in the direction of the turn attracts the attention of the driver behind. The chrome outlined single exhaust pipe complete the rear looks.

Mileage Running Cost

The carmaker has revised the engines for better fuel economy. The TFSI petrol engine can return 17.84kmpl the TDI diesel on the other hand, can return ARAI certified mileage of 18.25kmpl. These figures definitely add some strength to the configuration.

Comfort Suspension

As far as ride quality is concerned, the comfort-oriented suspension deployed by the carmaker works pretty well. The demeanour of the car on roads remains serene and unruffled. The suspension which is heavily tuned for the Indian road conditions absorbs bumps and other undulation quite easily offering an impressive ride quality. Even on the broken surfaces, the cabin remains composed.
The steering grip is awesome and the car takes the corner with ease. The NVH levels are quite good till the 120 kmph mark, beyond that you are likely to hear wind noise peeping in.

Engine Performance

Audi has introduced a new set of engines in the new A4. The 1.4L 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine which is the smallest of the engine available from Audi in the Indian market has been thoroughly tweaked to give the powerful and refined performance. The car though replaces the 1.8L powertrain available in the earlier model, is nothing short of explosive.
The powertrain makes 150PS and 250Nm of max torque and when paired to 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, it can take the car from naught to 100 in mere 8.5 seconds. The direct-injection turbocharged engine is silky smooth and the moment you press the engine start button, you can feel the refinement. The high amount of torque really helps in the drivability, especially in the city premises where performance is more than adequate with the quick and effortless shifts coming from the automatic gearbox. It seems the gearbox is in perfect sync with the petrol engine.
Coming to the diesel one, the carmaker has installed a new 2.0L oil burner for the performance-oriented folks. The powertrain produces 190PS of power and 400Nm of max torque. The power is transmitted to the front wheels via 7-speed S-Tronic gearbox. On starting the engine, there is an obvious diesel clatter but as you move on, the noise diminishes until you get to hear a splendid silence. Once the needle goes past 2000rpm, there is a sharp acceleration in the pace. There are three modes provided catering different driving conditions viz. Drive, Comfort and Sport. The real potential of the engine can be unleashed on the highway where the motor does not let the driver feel short on power. Once the turbo kicks in, the car can disappear in moments.

Braking Safety

Coming to the braking department, it’s very much predictive without any guesswork. The car can quickly shed the speed in the straight line without any fuss. In terms of safety, the car comes loaded with top-notch safety kit including 8 airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, vehicle stability control system and hill assist.
Other aspects include front and rear parking sensors, rear parking camera, warning triangle, first aid kit, tyre pressure monitoring system and anti-theft device among others.
