Volkswagen Group’s diesel emissions scam is turning out be an endless affair. The German manufacturer has reportedly admitted that another 85,000 cars, fitted with the company’s 3.0-litre TDI V6 diesel engine, have the ‘cheat device’ or emissions rigging software installed to pass American emissions testing for NOx.

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) of the US had served its second notice to VW earlier in November 2015, claiming that the group’s 2014, 2015 and 2016 year models which are powered by the 3.0-litre V6 diesel unit were also fitted with the cheat software. As per EPA’s findings close 10,000 vehicles would be further affected by the emissions scam in the US, including Porsche models. Volkswagen, after initially denying the charges, has now admitted of installing a similar defeat software on its 3.0-litre V6 diesel engines. The shocking bit, however, is that it affects models from 2009 and onwards, thereby, taking the actual count to over 85,000 vehicles in USA alone!

The EPA, in its findings, has come to know that if the engine’s control module (ECM) detects an emissions test, it enters into a “temperature conditioning” mode, which in turn limits the output of NOx from the tail-pipe. When the ECM’s cheat software notices and confirms that the test is over, it reverts to operate in a normal manner and emits up to nine times the permitted levels of NOx!

The models that are affected by the latest disclosure include 2009-2012 Audi Q7, 2014 VW Touareg, 2016 Audi A6 quattro, A7 quattro, A8L, and the Q5 as well as the 2015 Porsche Cayenne diesel.

According to Audi USA, the defeat software used in V6 engines is different from the one used in VW Group’s 2.0-litre diesel engines. In fact, as per the manufacturer, the 3.0-litre diesel engines do not have any defeat device and comply with European emissions regulations. Regardless of that, sales of Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche cars fitted with the 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine in the US have been halted for the time being.
