Volvo in India has launched a petrol variant of its V40 Cross Country luxury hatchback at Rs. 27 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). Badged as the Volvo V40 Cross Country T4, this sleek offering is now powered by a compliant 1.6 litre, four cylinder, direct injection, turbocharged petrol engine that is Euro 5 compliant in European markets. The engine is capable of developing a maximum power output of 182.5PS @ 5,700 rpm while peak torque output is rated at 240Nm between 1,600 rpm and 5,000 rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox and is fitted with a start/stop system. The V40 Cross Country T4 comes with a 62 litre fuel tank, weighs 1,485 kg and has a 0 - 100 km/h time of 8.5 seconds.

When Volvo first launched the V40 Cross Country in India, it launched only a fully loaded variant citing that it was aimed at a more mature audience that wanted their car to come loaded with all safety and convenience features of a luxury car. Volvo is sticking to that mantra with the T4 variant too, as it comes loaded with a host of features including active bending bi-xenon head lamps, whiplash protection, multiple airbags including driver’s knee airbag and dual stage front airbags, the company’s City Safe technology, anti-lock braking system, traction control, stability control and more. The V40 Cross Country comes with a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

Inside, the Volvo V40 Cross Country T4 can be availed with either a single tone interior or a dual tone theme. The trademark floating centre console is present here as well along with a TFT display screen for the infotainment system which is hooked to eight speakers. Although, in a fully loaded luxury car we expected the optional rear view camera to be offered as standard.

The launch of the T4 versions of the V40 Cross Country has expanded the luxury hatchback’s reach in India as the car has only been available with the company’s D3 diesel engine in India since its launch in the year 2013. Like the petrol variant, the V40 Cross Country D3 is also available in a single variant in India that is priced at Rs. 33.25 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

In India, the Volvo V40 competes against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Mercedes-Benz B-Class and BMW 1 Series.

Tomas Ernberg, Managing Director, Volvo Auto India at the launch if the petrol V40 Cross Country said,"We are excited to bring the petrol variant of V40 Cross Country to India. Buoyed by the growing acceptance of V40 Cross Country since June 2013 when we launched it here, we have now decided to bring in the petrol variant at a very competitive pricing in order to increase our reach further. I believe our customers would be enthralled with this new car.”
