The Volvo V40 Cross Country is almost here. My love affair with Volvo began when I first drove the S60 sedan in all-wheel drive guise and monster of a petrol-V6 engine under its bonnet. I love the way modern Volvos feel both on the inside as well as the overall driving experience. Being a CBU import in India, Volvos have never been what you'd call value-for-money. The Swedish giant has added the entry-level D3 diesel model just to make their cars a bit more affordable. Their latest offering will be the V40 Cross Country which will be the cheapest model in India taking the fight to the BMW X1 which was the first ever premium SUV in India.

Recently, Audi announced their entry into this ever growing segment with the Q3. That said, the Q3 priced a tad bit higher compared with the Beemer. We expect the new V40 Cross Country to be priced around Rs 25 lakh for the base trim. Which puts it right in contention with the BMW X1. An option of a 1.6 litre petrol and 2.0 litre diesel will be available on the V40 with the latter being the more expensive of the two. Now, it will interesting to see if Volvo ditches some of their active safety features which the car maker is known for, just so that  it can be offered at an attractive price.

Today there have been reports of sightings which suggest that the launch could be near. Having said that, Volvo India top officials had already hinted at a first quarter-2013 launch. Anyway, there's just been addition to the rival's list thanks to Mercedes-Benz. The B-Class will be there to make life difficult for Volvo. Speaking of which, Volvo won't offer the V40 Cross Country with an all-wheel drive system to begin with, at least. Until now, the BMW X1 had ruled the roost in this segment and with the V40 coming our way, I might just favor the Volvo for its exclusivity, build quality and technology.
