A top official at Volvo India has revealed that, the Swedish car maker would launch the new Volvo V40 Cross Country in India later next year. According to him, Volvo is planning to introduce the entry-level SUV by the end of this financial year. The V40 Cross Country will take on the likes of the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3. The Volvo V40 Cross Country was first unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show this year and has been among the few products that Volvo has in mind for the Indian market. The BMW X1 was the car that kicked off this segment following which Audi launched the Q3. The base BMW X1 is priced at just over Rs 22 lakh for the petrol model while the Q3 is a bit expensive. Volvo wishes to spoil the party with the V40 which has already generated quite a lot of interest worldwide. The V40 Cross Country is a capable SUV with a raised ride height compared to the standard V40 hatchback.

The car also features all-wheel drive with Hill Decent Control unlike the other two. The car will also pack Volvo's latest active and passive occupant as well as pedestrian safety devices. The 163 bhp D3 diesel engine which also powers other Volvo cars in India is expected to go under the V40's hood. The 2.0 liter engine generates 400 Nm of torque which should be enough for most of the roughest terrains one might encounter.
