Swedish luxury car manufacturer Volvo has officially confirmed the launch of its new model in the Indian car market - the Volvo S90 premium sedan. The 2016 Volvo S90 is expected to hit our shores by mid or late 2016 and will compete against some of the established offerings from German and British brands.

The first images of the upcoming sedan have also surfaced on the internet recently in the form of a scale model. The S90 will go up against flagship sedan models of competing companies. However, it is expected to be priced similar to cars placed a segment below such as Audi A6, BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, in spite of the fact that the upcoming S90 will be sold as a CBU (Completely Built-up Unit). It is expected to be priced between Rs. 50 – 60 lakh.

The S90 will come fitted with luxurious equipment and advanced safety features that are first seen on the recently launched XC90 SUV. The new saloon takes its design cues from the Volvo Concept Coupe and the new-generation Volvo XC90.

Built around the company’s new Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) for a stiffer and sturdy chassis setup, the S90 is going be a head turner for sure. It will feature the new Thor’s Hammer-shaped headlamps with LED daytime running lights, seen in the new Volvo XC90, and will have silver accents around the fog lamp cluster. At the front, a rectangular front grille with a dash of chrome coupled with a bigger front bumper and air intakes with chrome surrounds, will make the new sedan one of the most striking models in the company's portfolio.

It is going to be one of the safest cars with a host of safety equipment like Auto Brakes at Intersection and Run Off Road Protection. This prevents accidents at busy junctions while automatically barking during busy traffic jams. Other notable safety features will include automatic emergency braking, camera with sensors, cruise control, lane assist and much more.

Powering the new Volvo S90 will be the same engines that are fitted with the new XC90 SUV. It will receive both petrol and diesel units, while four-pot motors and a T8 hybrid variant are also on the cards. The turbo diesel engine will generate 192PS of power and 400 Nm of torque, while the top-end variant with same engine will make around 228PS and 470 Nm of power and torque, respectively.

The petrol mill, on the other hand, will produce around 258PS of max power and 350 Nm of peak torque. The T8 Hybrid model is said to develop around 400PS of power and 640 Nm of torque.

It is true that Volvo has a small network in India, but owing to the advanced safety features and luxurious interiors as well as exteriors, the upcoming S90 sedan is expected to attract good number of sales in the country.
