A more off-road version of the India bound-Tiguan was unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show this year. Volkswagen would equip this version of the Tiguan with a petrol motor and a hybrid system. First showcased in the Golf GTE, the modified version of the hybrid-petrol combination will have two seperate electric motors for front and rear wheels. Meaning the Tiguan GTE Active Concept will be able to traverse off-road completely on electric power for a short span.

The electric motors will be coupled with a 1.4 litre, four-cylinder petrol engine that generates 148PS. Combined with the electric motors (54 PS up front and 114PS on the rear), the SUV is able to develop a total of 221PS. All this power and yet the fuel efficiency is at a frugal 31.9 km/l. On electric-only mode, the range of the combination of electric motors is 32 kms, however, the combined petrol-electric range is over 930 kms.

Energy to run the electric motors is provided by a 12.4kWh lithium-ion battery mounted on the luggage compartment floor that can be charged by a standard 240 volt plug-in along with the option of charging through the petrol mill in case it is being driven. If battery reserve is available, the Tiguan GTE Active Concept will start on electric mode, select the apt driving mode and channel it to either front wheels, rear wheels or all four wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch 'autobox'.

The chassis of the off-roader has also been modified with alterations to the ride height increasing its ground clearance from 225mm from 180mm, thereby increasing approach and departure angles to 26.1 and 29.9 degrees from 25.6 and 24.7 degrees, respectively. A total of six driving modes namely On-road, Off-road, Sport, Snow, Charge and Battery-Hold are available in the five-seater SUV.

On the outside, new bumpers with blackened-out cladding, wide wheel arches and the works accentuate the Tiguan GTE Active Concept's ability to go off-tarmac. Altered headlight surrounds, black wing mirrors, reworked aluminium roof panel incorporating the auxiliary LED spotlights mounted on roof bars, chunkier door sills and new 16-inch alloy rims with high-profile tyres are also a part of the package.

And if you were thinking the inside are not spruced, think again. Over the stock Tiguan SUV, the GTE Active Concept version gets off-road themed trims as well as a 9.2-inch infotainment system that supports gesture controls and interfaces with Apple Car Play and Android Auto to mirror your smartphone's screen.

Can we expect the Tiguan GTE Active Concept in the 2016 Auto Expo? Can't say for sure!
