Volkswagen Tarek Spotted In Brazil, May Rival Jeep Compass

  • Aug 07, 2019

Leading German automobile manufacturer, Volkswagen has been reportedly testing a new sports utility vehicle (SUV) called Tarek and the car was recently spotted in Brazil. The Tarek is similar to the Volkswagen Tharu sold in China.

The images of the Tarek test vehicle which is now being widely circulated on the internet, reveals a size similar to the Skoda Karoq which is expected to be rolled out in India next year. The Tarek is mounted on Skoda’s MQB platform which also underpins the Karoq, Tiguan and the India-bound T-Roc.

Volkswagen may introduce the Tarek in India as part of the company’s India 2.0 growth strategy. The mid-sized SUV could be positioned to rival the Jeep Compass. The Tarek is likely to find its place in the Volkswagen portfolio between the T-Roc and the Tiguan.

The Volkswagen Tarek, in the Brazilian market, will be hauled by a 1.4-litre turbocharged stratified injection (TSI) engine which produces 148PS maximum power and 250Nm peak torque. The engine is likely to be mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission (AT) system. An all-wheel-drive version of the car is expected to be launched later. If Volkswagen decides to introduce the Tarek in India, it may be available in a 2.0-litre diesel and petrol engine. The motor could be mated to 6-speed manual gearbox as standard and an optional 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) system.

The company, however, is tightlipped about rolling out the Tarek in India. In any case, the car is unlikely to make its India debut before 2021. The Tarek may command an ex-showroom price between ₹20 lakh to ₹25 lakh, which is similar to that of the Skoda Karoq. Besides the Jeep Compass, the Tarek will compete with the Hyundai Tucson.

Volkswagen, meanwhile, recently confirmed that the Tarek will replace the Beetle in the company’s Mexican portfolio.
